On June 3, 2021, the company announced the handover of a different car: a modern, bespoke one-off also called La Voiture Noire, created as a tribute to the historic Atlantic. Bugatti still described the original as missing in 2022.
Why people thought the lost Bugatti had been found
In May 2021, enigmatic Bugatti social-media posts prompted speculation about whether the missing black Atlantic had turned up. L’argus reported the question raised by the teasers, not a confirmed discovery: its May 13, 2021 report asked whether the manufacturer had found the lost car.
Bugatti’s June 3 announcement clarified what the news actually was: the company was handing over a newly created La Voiture Noire to its owner. Bugatti described this modern one-off as an homage to Jean Bugatti’s historic car, which it said “disappeared without a trace shortly before the Second World War.” The announcement concerned the new car’s handover, not the recovery of the original. Two cars, one name
| Vehicle | What it is | Documented status |
|---|---|---|
| Historic La Voiture Noire | Jean Bugatti’s black Type 57 SC Atlantic | Bugatti said it was missing in its 2021 announcement and still described it as missing in 2022. 2021; 2022 |
| Modern La Voiture Noire | A bespoke, modern Bugatti one-off inspired by the Atlantic | Bugatti announced its handover to its owner on June 3, 2021. Bugatti, June 3, 2021 |
The shared name and the modern car’s connection to the historic Atlantic made the announcement easy to misread. But the cars are not the same vehicle: one is the long-missing prewar Atlantic; the other is a later homage.

What is known about the missing Atlantic
Bugatti’s model history says four Type 57 SC Atlantics were built and three were delivered to customers. It identifies Victor Rothschild’s car as chassis 57 374 and Jacques Holzschuh’s as chassis 57 473. Holzschuh’s car was badly damaged in a fatal railway-crossing accident and later restored; it is not the missing black Atlantic. Bugatti’s Type 57 SC Atlantic history
The fourth Atlantic—the all-black car known as La Voiture Noire—is the one Bugatti says disappeared shortly before the Second World War. The company’s 2022 account continued to describe it as missing since the war. Bugatti, 2022

What happened to the original?
The sources cited here do not establish the Atlantic’s fate after it disappeared, its present location, or whether any specific wartime theory about its transport, concealment or destruction is true. Those possibilities should be treated as speculation, not a solved history. The latest official account cited here still calls the car missing; a claim that it has since been found would need credible, newer confirmation.
