Check your BMW’s VIN now using BMW’s recall lookup or the NHTSA recall lookup. Some specified BMWs are subject to recalls involving starter-system fire hazards, but these recalls do not cover every BMW. A model name or year alone cannot tell you whether your vehicle is included; use the VIN and follow the instructions for its exact campaign.
Could my BMW catch fire?
There is a fire risk associated with certain recalled BMW vehicles, not a finding that all BMWs are at heightened risk. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has described several distinct recalls involving starter systems. The affected populations and defect mechanisms differ by campaign, so the recall figures should not be combined or treated as a general BMW fire rate.
For example, NHTSA’s September 26, 2025 consumer alert described a park-outside recall covering nearly 200,000 specified BMW vehicles from model years 2019–2022, as well as 1,469 Toyota Supra vehicles manufactured by BMW. In that campaign, a starter relay may corrode, overheat and short circuit, creating a fire risk. The listed BMWs included specified Z4, 330i, X3, X4, 530i, 430i and 230i vehicles; the model names alone do not establish whether a particular car is included. NHTSA’s alert is about that campaign, not every BMW or the overall frequency of BMW fires.
A separate recall, campaign 24V-576, concerned starter overheating after repeated attempts to start a failing starter. NHTSA’s 2024 acknowledgment said electrical overload could overheat the starter and that an overheated starter could ignite nearby combustible material. NHTSA reported 105,588 potentially affected units for that campaign. That count is specific to 24V-576 and is not additive evidence of general fire risk.

Other NHTSA campaign documents describe additional specified starter-related recalls, including another starter-overheating recall reported in 2026. Defect, affected vehicles, interim precautions and repair details are campaign-specific; a notice for one campaign should not be assumed to apply to another.
Is my BMW included in the fire-risk recall?
The reliable way to check an individual vehicle is by its vehicle identification number (VIN), not by matching its model and year to a list. BMW and NHTSA provide VIN lookup tools. Search the VIN shown on your vehicle and registration, then read the result for the applicable recall and any interim safety instructions.

- Open BMW’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Enter the vehicle’s VIN and review any open recall results. Confirm the campaign and the vehicle-specific status rather than relying on a model-year list.
- If a recall appears, follow the interim instructions shown for that campaign and contact BMW or an authorized center to arrange the remedy.
These sources cover U.S. recall information. They do not establish the complete scope of BMW fire-related recalls in every country; owners elsewhere should check the official recall service for their market.
What should I do if my BMW has an open recall?
Follow the safety guidance for the specific campaign while arranging the recall repair. In NHTSA’s September 2025 starter-relay campaign, affected owners were advised to park outside and away from structures until the repair. Do not assume this precaution applies to every starter-related recall: check the instructions attached to your VIN and campaign.

The cited recall documents describe free dealer repairs, but the remedy and its applicability depend on the campaign and vehicle. Some documents describe dealer starter replacement; verify the VIN and campaign before relying on that remedy. Contact BMW or an authorized center for the vehicle-specific repair instructions. Do not buy a starter or relay as a substitute for a covered recall repair.
What if I see smoke from the engine compartment?
BMW’s September 2024 owner notice for campaign 24V-576 says, “If you notice smoke from the engine compartment, your vehicle may be experiencing this issue.” That warning is specific to the notice and campaign; smoke can have other causes and the sentence does not mean every smoke event in a BMW is this defect.

If smoke appears, do not continue driving. Exit the vehicle, move to a safe place away from traffic, and call 911 in an emergency, as BMW’s notice instructs. Once safe, arrange help rather than attempting to drive the vehicle to a repair facility.

The vehicle’s VIN determines whether any of these campaigns applies. The population counts above describe recall scope, not the number of fires or the probability that a BMW will catch fire.
