Which Volkswagen ID.3 models are eligible?
Volkswagen UK’s current configurator lists the optional upgrade for new ID.3 Pro Essential, Pro Match, Pro S Essential and Pro S Match orders. It does not establish eligibility for every ID.3, used cars or other Volkswagen EVs. What does the ID.3 power upgrade change?
Volkswagen lists 150kW as standard and 170kW with the optional upgrade for the eligible variants. In a report dated 14 August 2025, Auto Express described the same broad comparison as 201bhp standard and 228bhp after upgrading; the figures use different units and come from sources published at different times. Auto Express also reported Volkswagen’s claim that the upgrade adds 27bhp, raises maximum torque from 265Nm to 310Nm and does not affect range. Those are manufacturer claims relayed by the publication, not results of an independent test established here. Auto Express, 14 August 2025

How much does the ID.3 power upgrade cost?
Auto Express reported prices of £16.50 per month or £649 for lifetime activation on 14 August 2025. These are historical reported prices, not a confirmed current quote: Volkswagen’s current configurator directs buyers to its In-car Shop or Volkswagen Connect Shop for up-to-date pricing. Volkswagen’s current page describes a one-month free trial, paid subscriptions for one month or one year, and outright purchase for the lifetime of the car. The trial converts automatically to a paid monthly subscription unless cancelled, and subscriptions auto-renew at the end of their term. Review the shop’s current price, renewal and cancellation terms before starting.

Subscription or lifetime purchase: which makes sense?
The right format depends on how long you expect to keep the car, how much you value the extra output and the prices currently shown by Volkswagen. Compare the total subscription cost over your expected ownership period with the lifetime purchase price; do not rely on a break-even calculation using the 2025 report as if those prices were still current.
Auto Express reported that the £649 lifetime activation was attached to the car rather than the owner, so it would remain with the vehicle if sold. Volkswagen’s current configurator likewise describes the outright purchase as lasting for the car’s lifetime. Why is VW charging separately for power?
Volkswagen said the option lets customers choose a sportier driving experience during the vehicle’s life instead of paying a higher initial purchase price. In the Auto Express report, the company also said the car is presented on the configurator at its standard output, with the option made clear to buyers. Volkswagen statement quoted by Auto Express
The arrangement fits a broader digital-business strategy Volkswagen outlined in 2021, when it said over-the-air updates would support functions customers could order as needed.
