What is the VW–Rivian joint venture?
Called Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC, and often shortened to RV Tech, the venture was announced on November 12, 2024. Operations were expected to begin the following day. Volkswagen Group and Rivian each hold a 50% stake, and the company operates independently, according to the automakers’ launch announcement and Volkswagen Group’s 2024 annual report.
The arrangement is a technology partnership, not a merger of the two automakers. Its purpose is to develop systems intended for vehicles from both companies.
Who leads the venture?
The launch announcement named Wassym Bensaid of Rivian and Carsten Helbing of Volkswagen Group as the venture’s co-CEOs and co-leaders.

What is RV Tech developing?
The central work is next-generation electrical architecture and vehicle software for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Volkswagen’s 2024 annual report says the venture builds on Rivian’s existing software and electrical architecture for use in future vehicles from both partners. The launch announcement described a scope spanning relevant vehicle segments, including subcompact cars.
In practical terms, the partnership is meant to develop the electronic and software foundation that can support vehicle functions and updates across multiple models. The announcement identifies zonal electrical architecture, vehicle software and SDV platforms as areas of work; it does not establish that every future Volkswagen or Rivian model will use the same hardware or software configuration.

How much is Volkswagen investing, and how is it structured?
Volkswagen Group’s planned commitment is up to $5.8 billion by no later than January 2028, as stated in its 2025 annual report. The amount is a maximum planned investment, not a single payment made when the venture launched. The launch release described an initial contribution and further funding linked to milestones:

What progress and vehicle timing have been announced?
In a one-year update dated November 12, 2025, Volkswagen said RV Tech had more than 1,500 employees. The same update said winter testing of reference vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi and Scout was on track to begin in the first quarter of 2026. That was a stated plan at the time; the update does not itself confirm that the testing subsequently took place, nor does it give a production launch date for vehicles using the jointly developed technology.
