Volvo revealed the ES90 globally on March 5, 2025, after announcing its 800-volt technology on February 26. The company says its first 800 V model can add up to 300 km of range in 10 minutes at a 350 kW fast-charging station, while the twin-motor all-wheel-drive version with a 106 kWh battery is rated for up to 700 km on the WLTP cycle. Both are Volvo claims, not independent test results.
What the ES90’s 800-volt system changes
Volvo says the ES90 is its first model with an 800 V electrical system. The upgrade extends beyond the battery: Volvo says it includes changes to battery cells, electric motors, the inverter, charging and thermal systems. In principle, higher system voltage can support faster charging and reduce electrical losses, but the actual charging rate depends on the vehicle, battery and charging station.
Anders Bell, Volvo Cars’ chief engineering and technology officer, called the system “another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification.” Volvo says the system is intended to help the car charge faster and travel farther on a charge.
How fast can the Volvo ES90 charge?
Volvo’s 10-minute claim
Volvo claims the ES90 can add up to 300 km of range in 10 minutes when connected to a 350 kW fast-charging station. This is a best-case, conditional company figure: the station’s available power, outdoor temperature, battery condition and vehicle condition can all affect charging time. The figure is not a promise that every 10-minute stop will add 300 km.

Charging from 10% to 80%
Volvo also says new battery-management software reduces 10–80% charging time by as much as 30% compared with other electric Volvo cars, bringing it down to 20 minutes under the company’s stated conditions. That comparison and time are Volvo’s announced claims; no independent test result is provided here.
What range does Volvo claim for the ES90?
For Europe, Volvo announced up to 700 km of WLTP range for ES90 twin-motor all-wheel-drive versions equipped with a 106 kWh battery. The trim and battery qualification matters: it is not a universal figure for every ES90 configuration.

Volvo also cited a 740 km figure on China’s CLTC test cycle. WLTP and CLTC are different test procedures, so those numbers should not be treated as directly interchangeable or compared with an EPA rating as if all three measured range the same way. Volvo said US specifications and EPA range were not available when it made its 2025 announcement; that dated statement does not establish current US availability.
How the ES90 fits Volvo’s electric lineup
Volvo described the ES90 as combining sedan elegance, fastback adaptability and SUV-like space and ride height. At its March 2025 reveal, Volvo called it the company’s sixth fully electric model. It is based on Volvo’s SPA2 platform and Superset technology stack, with over-the-air updates planned for models using that stack.

The reveal announcement listed a panoramic roof, four-zone climate system, Google built-in infotainment, a 14.5-inch centre display and optional Bowers & Wilkins audio equipment. Equipment and availability can differ by market and version. Volvo quoted 424 litres of boot space, expanding to 733 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a 22-litre front storage compartment.
Charging cables and regional equipment
Charging equipment depends on market and configuration. Volvo Germany lists a 6 m, three-phase, 16 A Type 2-to-Type 2 cable as included ES90 equipment, so European buyers covered by that specification should not assume they need to purchase one separately. Volvo’s 2026 manual describes Mode 3 cables for AC charging and advises checking cable compatibility.
That AC cable is distinct from the high-power DC fast-charging setup behind Volvo’s 350 kW claim. Volvo’s manual references IEC 62196 and IEC 61851 cable standards and temperature monitoring. Confirm the included equipment and connector compatibility for the specific car and market rather than generalizing from a German listing.

The ES90’s headline range and charging figures come from Volvo’s own 2025 announcements. They establish what the company claimed at reveal, not independently verified real-world performance, current stock in every market or a current price. Initial orders were open in selected European countries, with Volvo saying other markets would follow later in 2025 and into 2026; that launch plan is not a current market-by-market availability list.
