Volkswagen announced its new-generation California campervan in May 2024. It brought sliding doors on both sides, a pop-up roof across the range and a plug-in hybrid with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. On Volkswagen’s UK page reviewed on 4 October 2026, the California started at £64,432 including VAT, with availability limited to existing stock; Ireland’s page listed a €73,995 starting price. Those are market-specific snapshots, not evidence that the van is a bargain.
What changed in the new Volkswagen California?
The California is based on the long-wheelbase Multivan and uses Volkswagen’s MQB platform. Volkswagen announced five versions in May 2024: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean. All were specified with a pop-up roof and sliding doors on both sides, giving occupants access from either side of the van.

The new model is larger than its predecessor in the dimensions published by Volkswagen. The new California measures 5,173 mm long, 1,941 mm wide excluding mirrors and 1,990 mm tall with the roof closed; the predecessor figures in the launch release were 4,904 mm long and 1,904 mm wide. These are manufacturer-published measurements, not independent measurements. Volkswagen’s May 2024 launch announcement also highlights reworked camping controls and more flexible individual rear seats.

Which California trim suits which kind of camping?
The most useful distinction is how each version balances passenger seating, sleeping space and cooking facilities. Equipment and trim names can vary by market and model year, so confirm the specification of the exact vehicle you are considering.
| Version | Seats and sleeping | Kitchen and camping equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Beach | Six seats; sleeping space for two beneath a manually operated pop-up roof. | Passenger-oriented entry version; no kitchenette specified in the launch release. |
| Beach Tour | Five seats and a folding mattress that creates a second sleeping area. | Auxiliary camping battery. |
| Beach Camper | Sleeping and seating details depend on the market specification. | Compact rear kitchenette with gas hob and drawers, plus a 230-volt hookup. |
| Coast | Four seats. | Full kitchen along the driver’s side and additional leisure-battery capacity. |
| Ocean | Four-seat Coast-based layout; check the specific vehicle’s market specification. | UK-market range-topper. Volkswagen UK lists additions over Coast including LED Matrix headlights, navigation, roof storage and ambient lighting. |
Choose Beach or Beach Tour for passenger flexibility
The Beach is the passenger-focused option: Volkswagen describes it as approved as a passenger vehicle, with six seats and a two-person sleeping space under the manually operated roof. Beach Tour trades a seat for a five-seat layout, adds an auxiliary camping battery and provides a folding mattress for a second sleeping area.

Choose Beach Camper for a compact cooking setup
Beach Camper adds a small kitchenette at the rear, with a gas hob and drawers, alongside a 230-volt hookup. It is the step up for buyers who want cooking facilities without the full side kitchen described for Coast and Ocean.

Coast has four seats and a full kitchen running along the driver’s side, plus extra leisure-battery capacity. In the UK range description, Ocean sits above Coast and adds equipment such as LED Matrix headlights, navigation, roof storage and ambient lighting. Treat those Ocean additions as UK-market guidance rather than a guarantee for every country or model year.
What engines and drivetrain are available?
Volkswagen’s May 2024 launch announcement listed three powertrains: a 2.0 TDI diesel rated at 110 kW/150 PS, a 2.0 TSI petrol rated at 150 kW/204 PS, and an eHybrid plug-in hybrid rated at 180 kW/245 PS. Volkswagen said the diesel and petrol versions drive the front axle; the eHybrid combines plug-in hybrid power with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The company described that combination as a first for an MQB-based Volkswagen Group model.
The current UK product page lists diesel, petrol and plug-in hybrid choices. It gives the California eHybrid 4MOTION an electric-mode range of up to 53 miles under the WLTP test procedure and a towing capacity of 1,570 kg. These are official UK manufacturer figures, not independent real-world results; confirm the current homologation and specification for the vehicle and market you are buying. Volkswagen’s UK California page has the market-specific product information.

How much does the California cost?
Volkswagen’s product pages reviewed on 4 October 2026 showed different starting prices in the UK and Ireland. They are separate market listings, not directly comparable offers.
| Market | Starting price shown | Availability note |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £64,432 including VAT, on Volkswagen UK’s page reviewed 4 October 2026. | The page said the California was available from existing stock only. |
| Ireland | €73,995, on Volkswagen Ireland’s page reviewed 4 October 2026. | Availability was not stated on the page cited here. |
Prices and stock can change. Differences in specification, taxes, delivery charges and local offers mean the figures should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison or a universal California price. The UK page also displayed a September 2026 promotion whose stated deadline has passed, so it is not a current offer.

Is it worth considering?
The California’s clearest appeal is choice: the range runs from a six-seat passenger-focused Beach to versions with increasingly substantial cooking and camping equipment, while the eHybrid adds a plug-in-hybrid option with all-wheel drive. Decide first how many seats and sleeping places you need, and whether a compact rear kitchenette or a full side kitchen matters. Then check the exact market specification, current stock and price for that trim.
The official figures establish the published layout, dimensions and powertrain choices, but they do not establish real-world fuel economy, usable electric range, charging experience, ride comfort or campsite performance. Those questions call for independent testing; do not assume the WLTP range or equipment list predicts every owner’s experience.
