Volkswagen is bringing the original Golf GTI W12-650 back into public view for the GTI’s 50th anniversary—not bringing it back to production. The one-off concept is slated to headline the brand’s GTI display at Wheels Mariënwaerdt in the Netherlands, September 11–13, 2026.
What “revives” means: a display, not a new Golf GTI
The car returning is the existing 2007 concept. Volkswagen Netherlands says it will be the centerpiece of the company’s 50-year GTI collection at Wheels Mariënwaerdt, alongside thirteen historic GTI models from the Pon Classics collection, the Golf GTI Clubsport EDITION 50 and the all-electric ID. Polo GTI. Volkswagen Netherlands’ anniversary announcement describes the W12 as an extreme concept and says it was not developed with production potential.
There is no announced production W12 Golf GTI to order. In this story, “revival” means the one-off will be shown at an anniversary event; it does not signal a new model or a return of the W12 powertrain.
What made the Golf GTI W12-650 different
Volkswagen unveiled the Golf GTI W12-650 at Lake Wörthersee in May 2007 as what the company later called “a technical exercise without limits.” It departed radically from the conventional front-engine Golf layout: the 6.0-litre biturbo W12 sat longitudinally behind the driver and front passenger, making the car a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive concept.

The first Golf GTI arrived in 1976, so 2026 marks 50 years of the model. Volkswagen’s anniversary program places the historic W12 concept beside vehicles with different purposes: a one-off engineering exercise for display, a production anniversary Golf and an electric GTI debut.

Volkswagen called the EDITION 50 the most powerful production Golf GTI to date in its June 20, 2025 announcement. Its 325 PS is a different figure for a different car; it should not be confused with the W12 concept’s 650 PS. Volkswagen also reported more than 2.5 million Golf GTIs produced worldwide in that announcement.
