The Volkswagen RCD 310 radio-side pinout is divided into four connector groups: speaker outputs, power and CAN signals, AUX output with telephone/microphone signals, and AUX input with CD-changer signals. Identify both the connector group and pin number: numbering restarts on each 12-pin connector. This pinout identifies the radio’s documented connections; it does not determine how a specific vehicle’s Quadlock is populated or what retrofit changes it needs.
RCD 310 pin assignments
The tables below reproduce assignments from a Volkswagen Tiguan service-manual reproduction. The first 8-pin group uses pins 1–8; the second uses 9–16. Each 12-pin group is numbered 1–12 independently, so a pin number alone is not enough to identify a connection.

Identifying power and ground
In the documented 8-pin supply/CAN group, pin 12 is the negative connection (terminal 31, ground), pin 15 is terminal 30 (continuous positive), and pin 11 is identified as a connected positive supply. Pins 9 and 10 are CAN Bus High and Low. These labels identify the radio-side functions; they are not instructions to apply power to a vehicle harness without checking its wiring diagram and connector orientation.
Before changing vehicle wiring
Volkswagen’s RCD 210/RCD 310/RCD 510 retrofit instructions say Quadlock pin changes depend on the radio or navigation system previously installed. They also say contacts absent because of vehicle equipment need not be changed. The procedure specifies no pin changes for vehicles with R110, while excluding vehicles with a factory-fitted third-generation radio. These are conditions in that retrofit procedure, not universal guidance for every car or market.

The same instructions name two accessories for limited scenarios:
- Aerial adapter 7L6 051 551: cited for upgrading from a second-generation radio to an RCD 310 or RCD 510.
- Phone-mute adapter 7L6 051 442: cited when the specified phone-mute cable condition applies.
The instructions state that these accessories are ordered separately. Confirm the exact vehicle, existing radio, equipment and current part fitment before purchasing; neither adapter is established as a universal RCD 310 requirement.

Installation, coding and verification
Volkswagen’s retrofit instructions call for coding the radio to the accessories installed in the vehicle after fitting, followed by a functional check. They describe using a release tool from wiring harness repair kit VAS 1978 to remove contacts from connector housings. If repinning is required, match the release tool to the terminal and connector rather than assuming a generic tool will fit.
The instructions recommend installation by a competent workshop with vehicle-specific literature and tools, warning that incorrect fitting may damage the vehicle or radio. The pin assignments are reproduced in service and retrofit materials; confirm them against the exact radio label and the wiring diagram for the vehicle’s market and equipment before making changes.
