The UK-market Volkswagen Multivan is a flexible MPV with space for up to seven seats—not eight. It can be used for trips and camping with Volkswagen’s removable BusBox accessory, but the UK materials reviewed describe the California as Volkswagen’s purpose-built campervan range, with a pop-up roof and sleeping space for four.
How many seats does the Volkswagen Multivan have?
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK describes the Multivan as having space for up to seven seats. Its five rear seats can be moved or removed, and the second row can face rearwards. The exact approved seating capacity of an individual vehicle depends on its configuration; check its registration documents and model-year specification rather than assuming every Multivan has seven usable seats. Can you camp in a Volkswagen Multivan?
Yes. Volkswagen lists a removable BusBox mobile camping unit as a Multivan accessory. It fits in the luggage compartment and includes a two-flame cooker, storage, two 10-litre water canisters and washing-up bowls. It adds useful camping equipment, but it is not evidence of a factory-integrated kitchen or a sleeping roof.
BusBox and mattress
Volkswagen also lists a 195 cm comfort mattress for use with the BusBox. The listed part numbers are BusBox 7E1069630 and mattress 7LA069620. In Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK’s current pages, the Multivan is presented as a flexible passenger vehicle that can be equipped with the BusBox, while the California is the campervan range. The California page lists a pop-up roof and four sleeping spaces, with up to five seats overall; the listed seat count varies by trim: five for Beach Camper and four for Coast and Ocean. How much luggage space does the Multivan offer?
Volkswagen UK lists 469 litres of standard luggage space and up to 1,844 litres with the rear seats removed. It lists up to 4,053 litres for the long-wheelbase model with panoramic glass roof. These figures depend on configuration, so check the specification for the exact vehicle you are considering. The moving and removable rear seats are useful for adapting the cabin, but removing seats changes the passenger capacity.
