Volkswagen’s 13 March 2026 announcement covers ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7 models equipped with its latest software generation—not an ID.4-only update. The announced features include digital key capability, an expanded app store and physical steering-wheel buttons. Volkswagen France said the vehicles were available to order; the release does not establish that the same software or timing applies in other markets.
What Volkswagen announced
Volkswagen France announced on 13 March 2026 that ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7 models with the latest software generation were available to order. The announcement highlights three features:

The release also covers the ID.3 Neo, but its broader changes should not be read as ID.4 changes. Volkswagen board member Kai Grünitz described the new software as offering increased performance and enriching the customer experience. That is Volkswagen’s characterization; the announcement does not provide measured performance gains, range improvements or customer-outcome data. Volkswagen France’s 13 March announcement.
Does this mean every ID.4 can get the update?
No. The March announcement concerns vehicles equipped with the latest software generation and does not specify a universal retrofit for existing ID.4s. Available software and installation routes depend on the vehicle’s current version and its market. Volkswagen UK, for example, lists software 5.4.0 for ID models currently on versions 4.x or 5.x, and version 3.8.3 for vehicles on 3.x. The UK guidance says some updates arrive over the air while others require a Volkswagen retailer. Those UK details should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Volkswagen UK software-update guidance.

How to check your ID.4’s software and update route
- Find the installed version. Volkswagen UK says it is shown in the infotainment system’s “ID. software” tile or under system information.
- Use guidance for your country. Check the local Volkswagen owner page or contact a retailer; the available version and delivery method may vary by market.
- Follow the route Volkswagen specifies. If the update is offered over the air, follow the vehicle’s instructions. If Volkswagen directs you to a retailer, use that route rather than assuming the update can be installed yourself.
What U.S. owners should know
Volkswagen of America says most model years 2020 and newer are eligible for available over-the-air updates. Its U.S. procedure says an electric vehicle needs at least 50% battery charge for the process described. This is general U.S. OTA guidance, not confirmation that the March 2026 European software-generation announcement applies to U.S. vehicles. No. Volkswagen Group reported 53,700 deliveries of the ID.4 and ID.5 combined in the first half of 2026, and its popular BEV-model list reported 901,000 cumulative deliveries for the two models combined. Neither figure is an ID.4-only total or establishes a current single-model ranking. The software announcement itself is about three models, not a sales ranking.
