U.S. safety records dated January 2026 identify two separate Volkswagen ID.4 battery recalls—not a single recall of 22,000-plus vehicles. The records list 43,881 potentially involved 2023–2025 ID.4s in campaign 26V030 and 670 potentially involved 2023–2024 ID.4s in campaign 26V028. Neither figure matches the number in the original headline. Check your vehicle’s 17-character VIN to find out whether either campaign applies.
What the two ID.4 recalls cover
The campaigns address different battery risks, cover different vehicle populations and call for different repairs. Their potentially involved vehicle counts should not be added or treated as one recall group.

Why the “22,000-plus” figure does not match these notices
The two January 2026 NHTSA records give campaign-specific populations of 43,881 and 670. Neither notice supports a 22,000-plus figure, and the records do not establish which recall that original headline may have referred to. Do not use that number to estimate whether your vehicle is affected; check its VIN against the active recall records.
How to check whether your ID.4 is included
- Find the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, usually visible at the base of the windshield or on the driver-side door-jamb label.
- Enter it in the Volkswagen Recalls and Service Campaign Lookup or NHTSA recall search.
- Check which campaign, if any, applies and whether the recall remains open. If the result is unclear, contact Volkswagen or an authorized dealer with the VIN and ask about campaigns 93EA and 93EW.
- Arrange the applicable recall repair with an authorized dealer. Both notices describe their campaign remedies as free of charge.
Charging and parking precautions depend on the campaign
The January 26, 2026 acknowledgment for campaign 26V028 gives interim instructions for vehicles covered by that campaign: park outside immediately after charging, do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight, avoid Level 3 DC chargers, and limit the maximum charge to 80% until repair. These instructions are specific to 26V028; do not assume they apply to every ID.4 or to campaign 26V030. Confirm the current instructions for your VIN and campaign with Volkswagen or your dealer.

For 26V030, the cited notice identifies overheating and a fire risk and describes a software update and battery replacement as necessary, but it does not provide the same interim charging instructions listed for 26V028. Ask Volkswagen or your dealer what to do while repair is pending if your VIN is covered by 26V030.
What the notices say about fire risk and repair timing
NHTSA’s January 26, 2026 acknowledgment for 26V028 says, “A vehicle fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.” Its acknowledgment for 26V030 says, “A high-voltage battery that overheats increases the risk of a fire.” Both campaigns call for a free dealer repair, but the repair differs by campaign.

Volkswagen’s acknowledgment for 26V030 expected owner notification letters to be mailed March 20, 2026. A letter is not a substitute for checking the current status of a specific VIN; use the lookup tools or contact a dealer to confirm whether repair is still required.
