Why does the ID.4 recall limit charging to 80%?
Volkswagen’s recalls concern certain high-voltage battery cell modules that may have misaligned electrodes. Under certain circumstances, the condition may lead to a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 80% maximum state-of-charge setting is a temporary precaution for vehicles included in the applicable campaigns; it is not the repair.

For the affected vehicles, Volkswagen’s interim instructions are to set the high-voltage battery’s maximum charge to 80%, avoid Level 3 DC chargers, park outdoors immediately after charging, and not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight. The NHTSA acknowledgement for the later campaign uses the title “Park Outside – High Voltage Battery May Catch Fire.”

Two campaigns address potentially affected battery cell modules and carry the 80% guidance. A separate, much broader campaign involves a battery health check and software; it should not be mistaken for the electrode-module recalls.

These are separate campaign populations, not figures to add together. A model year alone does not establish eligibility: the filings identify vehicles using production records and, for the module campaigns, specific battery modules. Not every ID.4 in the listed years is included, and the filings do not establish an individual vehicle’s probability of fire.
What is the repair, and what should owners do?
For the electrode-module campaigns, Volkswagen’s stated remedy is no-cost replacement by a dealer of potentially affected high-voltage battery cell modules. Until that repair is completed, follow the campaign’s interim instructions. The charging cap is not a substitute for arranging the recall remedy.

- Look up your 17-character VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup or check with Volkswagen. VIN results show vehicle-specific unrepaired recalls; a year, make, and model search gives general results.
- Confirm which campaign applies. If a battery campaign appears, note its campaign number and contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer to arrange the next steps. If the VIN status is unclear, confirm it with Volkswagen or a dealer.
- Follow the instructions for your campaign while the repair is pending. For 25V836 / 93EV and 26V028 / 93EW, that means the 80% maximum charge, no Level 3 DC charging, outdoor parking immediately after charging, and no indoor overnight charging.
NHTSA says some recently announced recalls may not yet have all affected VINs identified, and completed recalls do not appear as unrepaired. If a result is unclear, recheck and confirm with Volkswagen or a dealer.

How to distinguish the recalls
When discussing the issue with a dealer or checking a notice, use the campaign numbers rather than relying only on the model year. The 25V836 / 93EV and 26V028 / 93EW filings concern potentially affected battery cell modules and include the 80% interim instructions. The 26V030 / 93EA campaign is a battery health check and software campaign with a different stated remedy.

The same 80% and charging precautions are also reflected in Transport Canada’s notice for Recall 2025669. Canadian owners should follow the notice and instructions applicable to their own vehicle; U.S. campaign numbers and VIN lookup guidance should not be assumed to determine Canadian coverage.
