Veoneer’s August 2020 announcement paired its perception and driving-policy software with Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride compute for advanced driver-assistance and automated-driving systems. The choice of Qualcomm as its system-on-chip partner—not a disclosed production deployment—was what prompted trade coverage to describe Veoneer as leaving Nvidia.

What Veoneer and Qualcomm announced

On August 27, 2020, Veoneer and Qualcomm Technologies announced a collaboration on scalable advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and collaborative and autonomous driving solutions. Veoneer said its next-generation perception and driving-policy software would run with Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride system-on-chips (SoCs) and accelerators. Veoneer’s announcement and Qualcomm’s release described that same division of work.

Was Veoneer dropping Nvidia?

That phrasing refers to Veoneer choosing Qualcomm for the SoC partnership described in the 2020 announcement. EE Times reported the move as Veoneer leaving Nvidia and quoted CEO Jan Carlson: “We have no intention to go into any other relationship for SoC partnership. We picked Qualcomm here.” The EE Times report framed the offering as an alternative for automakers and Tier-1 suppliers, and as a challenge to Intel’s Mobileye business.

The announcement establishes the intended partner and technical arrangement at that time. It does not, by itself, establish how many vehicles used the platform, whether a particular vehicle reached production, or what the companies’ current commercial relationship or product availability is.

Which company supplied what?

Part of the announced stack Supplier Role
Perception and driving-policy software Veoneer Software intended to interpret the driving environment and determine driving actions.
System-on-chips and accelerators Qualcomm Technologies Snapdragon Ride compute intended to run ADAS and automated-driving workloads.

So the partnership was both a silicon/platform arrangement and a software collaboration, with distinct contributions from each company. It was not simply a Qualcomm chip sale, nor did the releases describe Qualcomm replacing Veoneer’s perception and driving-policy software.

How the approach compared with Mobileye and Nvidia

The useful distinction is how much of the overall system an automaker or Tier-1 supplier could shape, rather than an unsupported claim that one platform was faster or safer. The contemporary sources positioned Veoneer and Qualcomm as a scalable, configurable option for customers integrating ADAS and automated-driving systems.

Nvidia was the alternative or prior SoC relationship discussed in the trade report; the announcement does not provide a head-to-head technical comparison.
Software arrangement Veoneer supplied perception and driving-policy software; the companies presented the platform as configurable. EE Times characterized Mobileye as a “black-box” incumbent. That is the trade report’s framing, not a detailed product-by-product specification. The announcement does not compare Nvidia’s software offering or state that Veoneer’s software was technically superior.
Customer and vehicle scope Presented for automakers and Tier-1 suppliers seeking scalable ADAS and collaborative or autonomous-driving solutions across vehicle tiers and levels. The sources do not provide a matched comparison of vehicle levels, customers, or production timing. The sources do not provide a matched comparison of vehicle levels, customers, or production timing.
Integration and timing Configurability was part of the positioning; production timing and OEM integration effort were not quantified in the releases. Comparable integration burden and time to production are not stated in the cited sources. Comparable integration burden and time to production are not stated in the cited sources.

For an OEM or Tier One, the practical appeal was the possibility of combining Veoneer’s driving software with Qualcomm compute while retaining integration choices. The trade-off is that a configurable multi-supplier stack can require the vehicle maker or its Tier One to coordinate interfaces, validation, and system responsibility. The 2020 announcements did not quantify that burden, promise a production schedule, or publish comparative safety or performance results.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

  • It shows: Veoneer selected Qualcomm as its SoC partner for the announced collaboration and planned to combine Snapdragon Ride compute with Veoneer software.
  • It does not show: a vehicle-specific production launch, deployment volume, demonstrated safety outcome, or a measurable advantage over Mobileye or Nvidia.
  • It is historical: the releases date from August 27, 2020; they are not evidence of current branding, ownership, availability, or partnership status.
