VanPi is a configurable Raspberry Pi-based system for centralizing control and monitoring in a camper van, travel trailer, or RV. Its core Relay Board is described as controlling selected equipment and reading temperature and tank sensors; add-ons cover battery-voltage measurement, dimmable lighting, and remote app access. What a particular build can do depends on its board revision, software, wiring, and connectivity.
What VanPi does
VanPi is an ecosystem of hardware and software intended to bring selected van systems into one control setup. Rather than replacing every appliance or vehicle control, it provides an interface for compatible equipment and sensors. PeKaWay’s product overview describes the system as open source and expandable, and says it integrates with Apple HomeKit. Those descriptions should not be read as a promise that every device, app, or board revision is supported today.
The practical appeal is having chosen utilities and sensor readings accessible through a shared system. It is not a universal, plug-and-play controller: the components must match, and each connected load still needs appropriate wiring and verification.
What the Relay Board and add-ons are described to do
The Relay Board is the central interface in the product overview. The specifications below come from that overview, not an independent test; check the documentation for the exact board revision before choosing or wiring equipment.

| Component | Role described by PeKaWay’s overview | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| VanPi Relay Board | Eight relays for systems such as heaters, lights, and water pumps; the overview says connected loads should be under 10 amps. It also lists connections for up to four temperature sensors and four tank sensors. | Exact revision limits, electrical requirements, wiring, and suitability for each load. The under-10-amp figure is an overview specification, not a general rating for every revision or installation. |
| Raspberry Pi host | The overview names a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B or Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W as host options. | Which Pi models work with the Relay Board and software image you intend to use. Current revision support is not established by the older overview. |
| Measurement shunt | Monitors battery voltage, according to the overview. | Compatibility with the intended board and software, and what battery information the specific setup actually exposes. |
| DIMMY board | Provides lighting dimming, according to the overview. | Compatibility with the lights, wiring, and VanPi configuration in the build. |
| IoT Bridge | The overview describes app-based remote access from iOS or Android. | Required connectivity and current app and hardware support. Remote access depends on a suitable connection; the overview does not establish that it works without one. |
How an installation can be configured
A PeKaWay project profile, “Schalldose on Tour,” reports one build using a Relay Board, tank sender, touchscreen, DIMMY, IoT Bridge, LTE router, heater integration, sensors, relays, Philips Hue, and HomeKit through Homebridge. It illustrates the range of components combined in that reported installation, not a compatibility guarantee or independently tested result for other vehicles.
For your own build, begin with the equipment and readings you actually want to control. A lighting-dimming setup, for example, involves different hardware and compatibility questions from a tank-level or heater-control setup. Remote app access adds a connectivity dependency, while HomeKit integration should be checked against the exact software and devices you plan to use.

Check compatibility before buying or wiring
VanPi’s software continued to receive updates in the dated official forum material: PeKaWay posted VAN PI OS v2.0.9 on November 27, 2025, with notes involving the LTE Bridge, Wireless Shunt, and apps; another official forum update, dated June 2, 2026, references VAN PI Core OS 2.0.10 and changes involving shunt and app integration. These posts show development at those dates. They do not establish present-day stock, universal backward compatibility, or support for every older board.
- Identify the hardware revision. Confirm the exact Relay Board or Core model rather than relying only on the older overview’s list of Raspberry Pi hosts.
- Match hardware to software. Check which software image and app versions are intended for that board and the features you need.
- Read the wiring documentation. Verify the requirements and limits for every heater, light, pump, sensor, or other device before connecting it.
- Confirm connectivity and integrations. For remote access, establish what internet or local network connection is required; for HomeKit or other integrations, confirm that the current configuration supports the devices involved.
- Check availability directly. Current shop inventory and regional stock are not established by the dated product and forum material.
Is VanPi the right approach for your van?
VanPi is worth considering if you want a configurable Raspberry Pi-based system and are comfortable checking hardware/software compatibility and handling a build that may require setup and maintenance. It may be a poor fit if you expect every vehicle appliance to work immediately without checking wiring, board support, and integration requirements.

- COMPLETE SENSOR ARSENAL - Includes 37 basic sensors and modules such as active buzzer module, 5V relay module, temperature and humidity module and so on. Neatly organized in a case with acomponent identification card. NOTE: Main controller board(for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.) and wires are NOT Included, giving you the flexibility to use it with your preferred.
- BUILD REAL PROJECTS, NOT JUST BLINK AN LED - Move beyond simple circuits. Create a Line Tracking Robot, a Smart Security System with PIR, a Weather Station with DHT11, and more. This kit is your launchpad into robotics, loT, andautomation.
- ZERO GUESSWORK WITH ONLINE TUTORIALS - Access our comprehensive, step-by-step online KEYESTUDIO Wiki (search "KT0193F")featuring wiring diagrams, and test code for every single project. Learn not just how, but why.
- 37 REAL-WORLD SENSORS FOR 37 UNIQUE PROJECTS - from a Flame Sensor and PIR Motion Sensor to a Joystick Module and Ultrasonic Sensor. Each module is selected to teach you adistinct aspect of electronics and programming.
Compare control approaches against the needs of your own build rather than assuming one is universally better:
- Functions: Which utilities and sensor readings need to be brought together?
- Access: Is local wired control enough, or do you need remote app access and the connectivity it requires?
- Compatibility: Do the board revision, sensors, and vehicle equipment match the intended configuration?
- Setup and upkeep: Are you comfortable maintaining a Raspberry Pi-based system and resolving configuration issues?
The available sources do not provide fair head-to-head tests against alternative van-control systems, so they do not support a performance ranking. Treat VanPi as a configurable option whose suitability depends on the planned installation, not a proven upgrade for every van.
