The clearest model-specific plan is BMW’s iX5 Hydrogen, which BMW says is still a prototype in development and is scheduled to enter series production in 2028. Toyota and Honda have announced fuel-cell technology and manufacturing plans, but those are not confirmations of additional named cars.
Why a ten-car list would be misleading
A fuel-cell system announcement does not establish that a particular passenger car is coming. To count a vehicle as upcoming, a manufacturer should identify the model and provide a credible production or market plan. Toyota’s and Honda’s announcements concern fuel-cell systems and production capacity; neither supplies a list of future passenger-car models that would support a ten-car roundup.
Nor do the available announcements establish comparable launch markets, prices, range figures and test cycles, warranties, or access to hydrogen refuelling. Without those details, a ranking against battery-electric vehicles would imply a level of certainty the announcements do not provide.
The confirmed model plan: BMW iX5 Hydrogen
BMW’s April 9, 2026 technical announcement schedules the iX5 Hydrogen’s series production to start in 2028. BMW describes it as a prototype in development, not a vehicle currently available to buy. The schedule is a manufacturer plan, not a confirmed retail on-sale date. BMW’s technical announcement

- 【REAL HYDROGEN POWER】: Zinc and food-grade citric acid generate real hydrogen, and a proton exchange membrane fuel cell combines it with air to drive the car. A hands-on clean energy STEM experiment.
- 【SAFE & KID-FRIENDLY】: Uses food-grade citric acid and enclosed reaction bottles for safe learning. Simple steps let kids build and run their own hydrogen-powered car for home science and class.
- 【COMPLETE SCIENCE KIT】: Kit includes zinc granules, citric acid powder, reaction bottle, tubing, fuel cell module, and car body. Start experimenting out of the box for school science fair projects.
- 【REPEATABLE EXPERIMENTS】: Replacement citric acid powder is easy to find, so experiments can be repeated for classroom demonstrations, family science nights, and school activities.
- 【EDUCATIONAL VALUE】: Teaches real energy concepts - hydrogen production, fuel cell reaction, and oxygen power generation. Great for science fair projects, STEM classrooms, and homeschooling.
The company says its Hydrogen Flat Storage tank system fits within the installation space used by a Gen6 high-voltage battery, and that refuelling takes a few minutes. These are BMW’s descriptions of a developing vehicle, not independent test results. BMW also says statutory WLTP consumption data is not yet available, so there is no published figure here for a like-for-like efficiency or range comparison.
In its 2026 X5 announcement, BMW says the iX5 Hydrogen will join the X5 family at a later date and identifies the fuel-cell system as co-developed with Toyota. That does not move the stated 2028 production schedule forward or establish a consumer delivery date. BMW’s X5 announcement

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
Toyota’s next fuel-cell system is not a car launch
Toyota announced a third-generation fuel-cell system on February 14, 2025. The company says it is intended for passenger vehicles as well as heavy-duty commercial vehicles, with introduction planned mainly in Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026 at the earliest. This is a system-level timetable: Toyota’s announcement does not name ten future passenger cars or give a model launch date. Toyota’s third-generation fuel-cell announcement
That distinction matters when assessing claims that hydrogen is about to challenge battery-electric cars across the market. A new component may eventually be used in one or more vehicles, but until Toyota identifies those vehicles and their markets, buyers cannot assess their price, range, availability, or refuelling options.

Honda’s module plans changed after its initial schedule
On February 19, 2025, Honda said it planned mass production of its next-generation fuel-cell module for FY2028, the fiscal year ending March 31, 2028. Honda stated targets versus its then-current module of half the cost, more than double the durability, and more than three times the volumetric power density. Those are company-stated module comparisons, not independently measured results or specifications for a named upcoming passenger car. Honda’s module specifications announcement
Honda’s June 30, 2025 update reassessed its dedicated module-plant plan in Moka, Japan: the company said it would reduce planned initial production capacity and delay full production amid changes in the global hydrogen-market environment. The earlier FY2028 schedule should therefore not be treated as an unchanged forecast for full production. Neither announcement confirms a particular future Honda passenger-car model. What buyers need before comparing hydrogen cars with EVs
A meaningful comparison requires vehicle-level facts rather than promises about a component or factory. For each announced model, look for:
- Production and sale plans: a stated production date, sales channel, and intended markets. A production target is not necessarily a retail launch or delivery date.
- Comparable range data: a published figure with its test cycle and market clearly identified. BMW says WLTP consumption data for the developing iX5 Hydrogen is not yet available.
- Refuelling details: tank capacity, refuelling information, and whether hydrogen stations are accessible where the car will be sold and driven.
- Ownership terms: a vehicle price and warranty. A fuel-cell module’s projected cost or durability does not establish either.
Until manufacturers publish those details for a wider set of named models, claims that a fleet of upcoming hydrogen cars will challenge the EV market remain ahead of the confirmed evidence.
