Footage published by Sky Sports shows Sergio Perez walking toward Carlos Sainz after their cars collided at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the broadcaster describing the exchange as an apparent confrontation. Formula 1 reported that both drivers crashed into the wall and retired on the penultimate lap. Stewards took no further action, finding neither driver predominantly to blame, according to Sky Sports.
What happened in the Baku crash?
Perez and Sainz were involved in a late-race battle at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. On the penultimate lap, their cars made contact and both went into the wall, ending their races, Formula 1 reported in its race coverage.
What does the footage show?
Sky Sports published footage framed as showing Perez approach and appear to confront Sainz after the crash. ESPN’s contemporaneous account described Perez as appearing to slap or hit the top of Sainz’s head while remonstrating. That is the broadcaster’s description of what the footage appears to show; it does not establish Perez’s intent.
What did the drivers say?
Both drivers gave post-race accounts of the collision. Formula 1 published their reactions in its post-race video. Their comments represent each driver’s perspective; they do not replace the stewards’ assessment.

Who was at fault?
Sky Sports reported that the stewards took no further action because neither driver was found predominantly to blame. No penalty followed. The available accounts support reporting that ruling, rather than assigning fault to Perez or Sainz.
Did Perez and Sainz make peace afterward?
Later coverage reported that the drivers had made peace by the Singapore Grand Prix. That subsequent development does not change the stewards’ decision on the Baku incident.
