Britain’s RML Group has received production approval for VarEVolt, a modular high-power battery system already used in the Czinger 21C hybrid hypercar. RML says the battery can deliver approximately 6 kW of power per kilogram and operate at up to 200C—figures that point to extremely rapid energy delivery, not a verified world record for energy density.
The distinction matters. RML has not publicly disclosed VarEVolt’s nominal capacity, energy density in Wh/kg, cell chemistry, or the conditions required to reproduce its headline charging figures. The battery is best understood as a lightweight, high-output system for performance vehicles rather than as a conventional long-range EV battery that can be fully recharged in 18 seconds.

What RML’s VarEVolt battery actually claims
RML Group, a UK automotive and motorsport engineering company based in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, has developed VarEVolt for hybrid and battery-electric performance vehicles. Its defining specification is power density: RML reports approximately 6 kW/kg.

Power density describes how quickly a battery can deliver energy relative to its mass. It is particularly important for acceleration, regenerative braking and short bursts of high output. Energy density, by contrast, describes how much energy a battery stores per kilogram or per litre, usually expressed as Wh/kg or Wh/L. Energy density has a direct relationship with potential driving range.
#1 Best Overall
Those are different engineering goals. A battery can have exceptional power density without storing enough energy to provide the range expected from a large family EV. Based on the public information available, RML has made a power-density claim for VarEVolt; it has not disclosed a verified world-leading energy-density figure.
Why hypercars want power density more than maximum range
Long-range electric cars need a large energy reserve. That generally means carrying a sizeable battery pack, even when the vehicle is not using all of its available power. A hypercar has a different set of priorities: low mass, instant acceleration, strong regenerative braking and the ability to deliver repeated bursts of power.
Recommended Free Tools
For that use case, a compact battery capable of accepting and releasing energy very quickly can be more valuable than a much larger pack optimized for highway range. It can:
- Provide high electrical output during acceleration;
- Recover more energy during heavy braking;
- Support repeated performance runs without requiring a large energy reserve;
- Reduce the mass of the hybrid or electric drivetrain; and
- Allow engineers to tune the vehicle around peak performance rather than maximum cruising distance.
This is a trade-off, not a universal replacement for high-energy batteries. A high-power pack may involve compromises in range, cost, thermal management, cycle life or packaging. RML’s public materials do not disclose enough information to quantify those compromises for every VarEVolt configuration.
What does the 200C charging claim mean?
RML has reported a charge/discharge rate of up to 200C. The “C-rate” relates charging or discharging power to the battery’s capacity. In an idealized calculation, a 200C rate corresponds to a full charge or discharge in:
1 hour ÷ 200 = 0.005 hours = approximately 18 seconds
The Tool Desk

That calculation explains where the 18-second figure comes from. It does not mean that a complete road-car battery can normally be connected to a public charger and filled in 18 seconds.
Actual charging time depends on the pack’s capacity, the charger’s maximum output, the vehicle’s electrical architecture, battery temperature, state of charge and the charging curve. Batteries generally cannot sustain their maximum charging rate from empty to full under all conditions. The charging equipment would also need to supply an enormous amount of power, with suitable cabling, cooling and electrical infrastructure.
RML’s more concrete performance example is that VarEVolt can deliver approximately 4.5 kWh in 40 seconds in the Czinger 21C application. That is a useful illustration of the battery’s role: delivering and accepting short, intense bursts of energy in a high-performance drivetrain. It should not be presented as an everyday refuelling equivalent for ordinary electric cars.
The Czinger 21C connection
VarEVolt is already used in the Czinger 21C, a US-developed hybrid hypercar produced by Czinger Vehicles. The 21C combines an internal-combustion engine with electric drive, making it a natural application for a compact, high-output battery.
In a hybrid hypercar, the battery does not need to provide the entire energy reserve required for a long-distance EV journey. Instead, it can support electric propulsion, acceleration and energy recovery while the combustion engine supplies additional energy over longer periods. That makes high power, low mass and rapid charge acceptance especially valuable.
The available evidence supports describing VarEVolt as deployed in the 21C in limited or small-volume production. It does not support saying that RML supplies the battery to a broad range of mainstream car manufacturers. RML has described an expanding portfolio with additional module variants for hybrid and battery-electric performance vehicles, indicating development beyond the initial hypercar application, but that is not the same as mass-market availability.
What production approval changes
On June 2, 2025, RML received Conformity of Production approval for VarEVolt. The approval was reported in connection with UN ECE Regulation No. 100, which covers safety requirements for electric powertrains and rechargeable electrical energy-storage systems used in road vehicles.
Rank #3
Conformity of Production is an important step because it concerns the ability to manufacture products consistently to an approved specification. Regulation No. 100 addresses electric-powertrain safety, including requirements relevant to high-voltage systems and rechargeable energy storage.

However, the approval needs to be interpreted precisely. It does not mean:
- Every carmaker can immediately order a standardized VarEVolt pack;
- The battery is available as a consumer replacement for ordinary EVs;
- Every VarEVolt configuration is suitable for every vehicle; or
- RML has reached mass production at the scale of major battery manufacturers.
It does mean that RML has passed a significant production-consistency and road-vehicle safety gate. That can help the company move from prototype and niche-volume engineering toward supplying additional production programs.
What RML has not disclosed
The public information reviewed does not establish several specifications that would be needed to compare VarEVolt fairly with conventional EV batteries:
| Specification | Public position | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Power density | RML reports approximately 6 kW/kg | Indicates how much output the battery can deliver for its mass |
| Charge/discharge rate | Up to 200C is reported | Indicates potential short-duration power transfer, subject to system conditions |
| Nominal capacity | Not publicly disclosed in the reviewed material | Needed to calculate total stored energy and charging power |
| Gravimetric energy density | Not publicly disclosed | Needed to substantiate a “highest energy density” comparison |
| Volumetric energy density | Not publicly disclosed | Important for vehicle packaging |
| Cell chemistry | Not publicly disclosed | Helps explain performance, thermal behavior, cost and durability |
| Cycle life at 200C | Not publicly disclosed | Shows how long the battery can sustain extreme operation |
| Required charging infrastructure | Not publicly disclosed in full | Determines whether headline charging rates are practical outside a test or race environment |
Without those details, it would be premature to infer a particular cell chemistry, claim a breakthrough in stored-energy density or assume that the battery can provide an 18-second full recharge for a large road-EV pack.
Why this could matter beyond one hypercar
The significance of VarEVolt is less about making all EV charging instantaneous and more about giving vehicle engineers another battery option. A modular high-power platform could be configured for different performance requirements: maximum output for a hybrid hypercar, a balance of output and capacity for a performance EV, or a specialized application requiring repeated regenerative-braking events.
That flexibility is valuable in low-volume performance vehicles, where customers may accept higher cost and limited range in exchange for acceleration, handling and exclusivity. It could also be relevant to motorsport-derived systems, specialist hybrids and other vehicles where peak power matters more than carrying the largest possible energy reserve.

A precise version of the story would be:
Britain’s RML Group has received production approval for VarEVolt, a modular high-power battery pack already used in the Czinger 21C hybrid hypercar. RML says the system can deliver about 6 kW/kg and operate at up to 200C, implying a theoretical full charge or discharge in roughly 18 seconds when sufficient power is available. The company’s public claims concern power density; a verified world-leading energy-density figure has not been disclosed.

That wording preserves the genuinely important news—the production approval, hypercar application and unusually high power capability—without confusing power density with energy density or turning a maximum-rate calculation into a public-charging promise.
Learn the battery terminology before comparing EV claims
Readers who want deeper technical background may find an electric vehicle battery systems book useful when comparing energy density, power density, C-rates, thermal management and high-voltage safety. A general technical reference should be treated as educational material, not as evidence that VarEVolt or any compatible hypercar component is sold through consumer marketplaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does VarEVolt have the world’s highest energy density?
That has not been established by the public evidence reviewed. RML has reported approximately 6 kW/kg, which is a power-density figure. The battery’s energy density in Wh/kg or Wh/L has not been publicly disclosed in the reviewed sources.
Can VarEVolt fully charge an EV in 18 seconds?
Not as an ordinary public-charging expectation. The 18-second figure comes from the idealized calculation for a 200C rate. Real charging depends on battery capacity, charger power, temperature, state of charge, charging limits and the vehicle’s electrical system.

VarEVolt has been used in the Czinger 21C hybrid hypercar. The available evidence supports limited or small-volume production use, not broad supply to mainstream electric cars.
What does Conformity of Production approval mean?
It indicates that RML has passed an important production-consistency and vehicle-safety step associated with UN ECE Regulation No. 100. It does not mean VarEVolt is a mass-market battery or universally compatible with road cars.
The Bottom Line
RML’s VarEVolt is notable because of its reported 6 kW/kg power density, 200C maximum rate and use in the Czinger 21C—not because a verified world-record energy-density figure has been published. Its June 2025 production approval gives the system greater regulatory and commercial credibility, but the battery remains a specialized high-performance platform whose capacity, chemistry, durability and real-world charging requirements are not fully public.
