Uber’s new robotaxi is a planned ride service built around a modified Lucid Gravity electric SUV, Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous-driving system, and Uber’s ride-hailing platform. The companies have shown a production-intent vehicle and begun supervised road testing, but they have not established that commercial rides are available to book.
What is Uber’s Lucid and Nuro robotaxi?
It is a fleet vehicle designed for rides requested through Uber, not a consumer car that owners can buy and convert into a robotaxi. Lucid supplies the Gravity-based electric vehicle and architecture, Nuro supplies its Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy system, and Uber supplies the ride-hailing platform and fleet operations. The companies say Uber or third-party fleet partners will own and operate the vehicles.

The partners announced the program in July 2025 with an initial target of at least 20,000 vehicles over six years. At CES in January 2026, they presented a production-intent vehicle and an Uber-designed in-cabin experience. In April 2026, Lucid and Uber expanded their commitment to at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles globally, including Gravity and future Midsize vehicles. Those figures describe commitments, not vehicles already deployed.
What is distinctive about the vehicle?
Exterior sensors and vehicle identification
The announced configuration uses cameras, solid-state lidar, and radar for 360-degree perception, with sensors integrated into a low-profile roof halo. Halo lighting is designed to help riders identify the correct vehicle, display their initials, and show ride status. These are features described by the companies, not independently evaluated results. Uber’s January 2026 announcement details the production-intent design.

How far along are testing and approvals?
Nuro leads autonomy testing and validation. Company announcements describe a process involving simulation, closed-course trials, and supervised public-road testing. The January 2026 reveal said supervised on-road testing began in the San Francisco Bay Area in December 2025. In June 2026, Uber said Nuro was conducting 24/7 on-road tests with safety operators in both the Bay Area and Houston. Nuro’s testing announcement describes the work as testing, not rider service.
In May 2026, Nuro said it had secured a California Public Utilities Commission Drivered Pilot Permit for robotaxi passenger-service testing, building on a California DMV Driverless Testing Permit. The permit milestone concerns testing; by itself, it does not establish that every approval needed for commercial passenger service is in place.

The cited announcements do not provide independent safety-performance results or accident-rate comparisons. A described validation process and supervised testing should not be read as proof that the service has been shown safer than human-driven rides or that validation is complete.

The San Francisco Bay Area is the first planned commercial market, with a launch targeted for later in 2026, subject to validation. Houston is the second announced market, with launch expected in mid-2027. The companies have also described an ambition to expand to dozens of markets over time. These are company expectations, not confirmation of launch dates or current availability. Uber’s June 2026 update names Houston and describes its fleet preparations.

The companies say the service will be offered exclusively through Uber. The cited announcements do not give a public booking date, fares, detailed service boundaries, or rider eligibility. Until Uber announces availability in a market, the robotaxi should be understood as a planned service rather than a ride option customers can assume is in the app.
The vehicle is notable for combining a six-passenger electric SUV configuration with a dedicated autonomy system and an Uber-designed cabin. The practical milestone to watch is not just vehicle production or more testing, but an explicit commercial-service announcement that identifies where rides can be requested and under what terms.
