U.S. sales rose for the Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord and Honda Civic during January–September 2026, according to Car and Driver. The Camry sold the most among the four; the Accord posted the biggest year-over-year percentage gain. These are first-three-quarter figures, not full-year totals—and SUVs and trucks still account for the vast majority of new-car sales in the United States.
How did the leading sedan models perform through September 2026?
Car and Driver’s October 5, 2026 report gives U.S. model sales for the first three quarters of 2026. The figures below are attributed to that report; the official Honda and Toyota materials cited here provide 2025 context, not independent confirmation of these 2026 totals.
| Model | Segment | U.S. sales, Jan–Sep 2026 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Camry | Midsize | 260,684 | Up 11.2% |
| Honda Accord | Midsize | 145,520 | Up 32.7% |
| Toyota Corolla | Compact | 195,141 | Up 8.4% |
| Honda Civic | Compact | 195,135 | Up 5.4% |
Among these four, the Camry led in units, while the Accord had the highest growth rate. The compact Corolla and Civic were nearly tied: the Corolla’s reported total was six cars higher.
What the growth does—and does not—say about the market
The gains are notable, but they do not show that sedans have overtaken SUVs and trucks. Car and Driver says those larger body styles still make up the vast majority of U.S. new-car sales. Nor is the improvement exclusive to Honda and Toyota: the same report says the Hyundai Elantra and Sonata, Kia K5, Mazda 3 and some luxury sedans also gained. Nissan Sentra and Altima sales, by contrast, fell by double-digit percentages.

Honda’s broader car category—which includes sedans, hatchbacks and sports cars—rose 15.6% through September, compared with 0.3% growth for Honda SUVs and trucks, per Car and Driver. That comparison covers different vehicle groupings; it is not a sedan-only growth rate.
How these results compare with 2025
Annual figures offer useful context, but the periods and categories should not be mixed. American Honda’s 2026 Digital FactBook lists 150,196 Accord sales and 238,661 Civic sales in the United States for full-year 2025. Those annual totals are not directly comparable to the nine-month 2026 numbers without accounting for the different time spans.

American Honda reported 389,061 U.S. car sales in 2025, down 3.9% from 2024, while truck sales increased 2.4%. The company also said passenger-car sales were nearly 390,000, led by Civic and Accord, with more than 36% of Civic sales and more than 50% of Accord sales being hybrids. It attributed Honda’s overall 2025 sales increase to record light-truck and electrified-model sales, not to sedans alone. These full-year results do not conflict with growth in the first three quarters of 2026: they describe different periods.
Toyota Motor North America reported 2,518,071 total U.S. vehicle sales in 2025, up 8.0%, and said electrified vehicles represented 47.0% of Toyota and Lexus sales. Those are company-wide figures, not sedan totals.

What can be concluded from the sales figures?
- The reported model gains cover January–September 2026; they are not completed-year results.
- Camry led these four models in reported volume, while Accord led in percentage growth.
- Corolla and Civic posted almost identical reported totals.
- Other makes and models also gained, while some sedans declined; the trend is not universal.
- Sales counts alone do not establish why buyers chose a model, its profitability, transaction prices, inventory levels or sales channel.
Honda’s stated strategy provides context, not proof of what caused the reported gains. In its January 2026 outlook, American Honda vice president of Sales Lance Woelfer said: “For American Honda, we are focused on delivering the right mix of gas-powered and hybrid vehicles to meet customer demand for affordable, high-value products.”
