The Redtail Skyloft Van turns a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter into a two-level expedition vehicle, with an insulated, climate-controlled rooftop bedroom above a fully equipped living space. The $530,000 figure in the original 2024 headline is historical: Redtail currently lists the turnkey van at $595,000, including the base vehicle and standard equipment.
What makes the Skyloft a two-story camper?
Redtail builds the Skyloft around a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 XD AWD high-roof chassis with a 170-inch wheelbase. Instead of treating the roof as an open-air tent, the design adds a hard-sided, insulated carbon-fiber composite camper that serves as an upstairs sleeping area. An electronic latch, folding-wall system and interior access hatch connect it to the main cabin.

The upstairs mattress measures 55 by 78 inches by 3.5 inches. Downstairs, the rear U-shaped lounge converts into a full-size widthwise bed, giving the van a second sleeping area. Redtail describes both areas as climate-controlled; the published equipment includes diesel-fired and in-floor heat and a 12,000-BTU, 48-volt air-conditioning system. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independently verified performance claims.
How is the living space laid out?
Main cabin
The lower level combines a wet bath with shower and toilet options, a galley and a rear lounge. Galley equipment includes built-in and portable induction cooktops, a stainless-steel sink, a double-drawer refrigerator/freezer and a convection microwave. A storage garage is designed to accommodate a full-size mountain bike or as many as four pairs of skis up to 190 cm long.

Power, water and climate equipment
Redtail’s current production specifications list a 14-kWh Volta lithium battery system, a 3,200-watt inverter, a dedicated 7-kW alternator, 330 watts of solar and shore-power capability. Water equipment includes 40-gallon fresh and 30-gallon grey tanks, heated and insulated tanks, UV and carbon-block purification, on-demand hot water and one-button winterization. Fuel capacity is listed at 45 gallons. These capacities and equipment descriptions come from Redtail; actual use and range depend on conditions and configuration.
What does the $530K headline mean now?
The $530,000 figure appeared in coverage published in 2024, including the New Atlas article dated February 7, 2024. It is not Redtail’s currently listed price. Redtail’s FAQ and order page list the turnkey vehicle at $595,000, including the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter base vehicle and standard equipment described in its specifications. Optional equipment includes Starlink in-motion satellite internet, a rear winch, dedicated dish storage and upgraded leather seating. Verify price and options with Redtail before ordering, since they can change.

The Skyloft rooftop camper is not offered as a standalone product: Redtail says it is exclusive to the complete van build. The company says 2027 orders are open to U.S. customers, with a $25,000 deposit to secure a build slot. Its ordering information describes selecting the vehicle color and interior materials, making progress payments at build milestones, and taking delivery in Boulder, Colorado with a two-day walkthrough. The order page gives a typical 14–16 month lead time; availability and timing should be confirmed directly.
What are the van’s size, weight and payload limits?
Redtail’s 2026-model-year current production specifications list the van at 25 feet 6 inches long, 8 feet wide and 10 feet 6 inches high, with 18 inches of ground clearance. Listed curb weight is approximately 9,600 pounds. The same specifications state a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 11,030 pounds, maximum payload of 1,430 pounds and gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 15,250 pounds.

Those figures are not a promise that every completed van has the same remaining carrying capacity: Redtail says options affect final weight. Passengers, water and gear all use payload, and Redtail specifically warns that trailer tongue weight counts against it. The van and trailer together must remain within the GCWR. Buyers should check the actual finished vehicle’s ratings and weight before loading or towing.
The listed chassis is a Sprinter 3500 XD AWD with a Van Compass 6.3 suspension system, 17-inch wheels and LT315/70R-17 BFGoodrich tires. Redtail cautions that specifications, dimensions, equipment and components can change and may vary with configuration and options.

What are the main trade-offs?
- More enclosed sleeping space, more overall height: the hard-sided upper room adds a separate bedroom, but the published exterior height is 10 feet 6 inches. Drivers need to account for clearance restrictions along their routes.
- Large systems, finite payload: the published electrical and water capacities support extended travel, but the van’s listed maximum payload is 1,430 pounds and can be reduced by selected options and carried supplies.
- Expedition capability at a luxury-vehicle price: the current listed turnkey price is $595,000, and the camper cannot be bought separately.
- Specialized purchase and delivery: orders are limited to the United States, with delivery described in Boulder, Colorado and a long stated lead time.
Is Gen 2 available yet?
Redtail has announced a Gen 2 Skyloft with a one-piece shell, a custom Garmin control interface and independent climate zones for the main cabin and upstairs room. The company says it expects Gen 2 to be on the road in July 2027. Those are announced future-model features, not equipment to assume on the current production van; Redtail says Gen 2 specifications are still being finalized.

The layout is aimed at travelers who want an enclosed upstairs sleeping room, a second convertible bed, substantial onboard power and water, and a vehicle equipped for four-season, off-grid trips. It is less compelling for buyers prioritizing a lower price, smaller footprint, easy parking or a camper that can be installed on a vehicle they already own. Before comparing it with another expedition van, look beyond bed count: check usable travel seats, real payload after people and supplies, overall height, garage access, included equipment, warranty and service arrangements, delivery timing and the actual weight of the finished vehicle.
