A naturally aspirated (NA) six-cylinder draws air through its intake without turbocharger boost. Neither type is automatically more economical, quicker to respond, or more reliable: the result depends on the particular engine, vehicle, calibration, fuel, load and driving conditions.
The useful distinction is how each engine breathes—not how its six cylinders are arranged. An inline-six or a V6 can be naturally aspirated or turbocharged.

How turbocharged and naturally aspirated sixes work
Naturally aspirated: air enters without boost
An NA engine fills its cylinders with air at roughly atmospheric pressure through the intake system. The engine’s displacement, design and calibration determine how much air-fuel mixture it can use. There is no turbocharger compressing the incoming air. “Naturally aspirated” describes this way of drawing in air; it does not mean that the engine lacks an intake system or that all NA engines produce the same output.
Turbocharged: exhaust energy drives an intake compressor
A turbocharger uses exhaust flow to spin a turbine connected to a compressor on the intake side. The compressor raises the pressure and density of the air entering the cylinders. With more oxygen available, the engine can burn more fuel and make more power from the same displacement, provided its fuel delivery and calibration support it. Charge-air cooling, often called intercooling, can reduce the temperature of compressed intake air; the hardware varies by engine.

That is why a turbo can let a manufacturer use a smaller engine in place of a larger one while retaining substantial output. The U.S. EPA describes that specific downsizing pathway: “Turbocharging saves fuel by allowing a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine to be used in place of a larger one without giving up power.” The important qualification is the replacement of a larger engine; the statement is not a guarantee that every turbo vehicle uses less fuel than every NA alternative. EPA explanation of turbocharging
In short, turbocharging changes how much air the engine can take in, while the cylinder count remains six. The additional air can support higher output, but it does not by itself tell you the vehicle’s fuel consumption, emissions, response, or durability. Those are outcomes of the particular engine and vehicle, not conclusions that can be drawn from the word “turbo.”
What changes in everyday driving
Power and torque
Turbocharging can deliver more output per liter and can make strong torque available at lower engine speeds. But “turbo” alone does not tell you how much torque arrives, when it arrives, or how long it is sustained. Turbo size, engine controls, transmission gearing and vehicle calibration all shape the result. A published peak figure is only one point in an engine’s operating range; a torque curve or stated rpm range gives more context about where useful torque is available.
Recommended Free Tools
Honda’s 2023 technical paper offers a specific engine-level comparison: its newly developed 3.5 L naturally aspirated V6 is rated at 213 kW and 355 Nm, while the related 3.0 L turbocharged V6 is rated at 265 kW and 480 Nm from 1,400 to 5,000 rpm. These figures show what those particular versions produce, not a universal advantage for every turbo six over every NA six. The turbo version’s stated torque range is useful context, but it does not establish how either engine feels in every vehicle or what acceleration a particular vehicle will deliver. Honda 2023 V6 technical paper
Peak horsepower or torque figures do not describe a whole vehicle’s acceleration. Vehicle mass, gearing, traction and tuning matter too. A turbo six can be more powerful than an NA six, but it is not inherently faster in every vehicle comparison. To compare two vehicles, use their actual ratings and, where available, the manufacturers’ power and torque curves; then consider the vehicle specifications and drivetrain rather than treating engine output as the whole result.
Throttle response and turbo lag
Turbo lag is a delay between a driver’s request for power and the rise in boost and propulsive response. It can occur, but turbo design and control strategies can reduce it; it is not accurate to say that every turbo has the same delay or that modern designs have eliminated it universally. An NA engine does not wait for boost to build, though its response still depends on its design and calibration. “No turbo lag” also does not mean that every NA engine will feel quicker in every vehicle, since the engine, transmission and vehicle setup affect response.

Honda’s 2023 V6 development illustrates how much turbo hardware matters: at a fixed 1,500 rpm during a load change, its twin-scroll turbo reached 80% of maximum torque 0.5 seconds faster than the mono-scroll comparison. That is a comparison of two turbo arrangements under the stated test condition—not a direct turbo-versus-NA response test, and not proof that every twin-scroll turbo will respond faster than every other design. Honda 2023 V6 technical paper
For a buyer, the practical question is how the particular vehicle responds in the conditions where it will be used. Turbo size, twin-scroll design, controls and transmission gearing all influence the result. If possible, compare the actual models on a test drive rather than assuming the induction label predicts response. A manufacturer’s torque range or an engine development test can help explain the design, but it is not the same thing as a direct evaluation of two complete vehicles.
Fuel economy
A turbo engine may use less fuel when it is downsized relative to a larger engine and driven at modest loads. If the driver frequently asks for sustained high output, the engine may use more fuel; towing or other heavy work can also increase consumption. The label “turbocharged” is not enough to predict fuel economy. The EPA’s statement about saving fuel applies to the case where a smaller turbocharged engine replaces a larger one without giving up power, not to a guarantee for every engine pairing or driving pattern.
For a buying decision, compare official fuel-economy figures for the exact model year, drivetrain and market rather than relying on engine type or displacement alone. Honda’s engine-level figures, for example, are not a controlled vehicle-level fuel-economy comparison. Mazda likewise cautions that towing with a turbo engine like a larger engine uses fuel like one; that is a manufacturer’s guidance, not a mileage figure for every vehicle. Mazda turbo engine resource
Keep the conditions of your own use in view when reading a fuel-economy rating. A vehicle that spends most of its time under modest load may use its turbocharged engine differently from one that regularly tows or demands sustained power. No controlled same-vehicle fuel-economy win for either induction type is established here, so a general claim that turbo sixes always get better—or worse—mileage would overstate the evidence.
Fuel grade, emissions and upkeep
Fuel requirements are specific to the engine and tune. In the Honda comparison, the NA version specifies RON 91 fuel and the turbo version RON 95. Those requirements apply to those Honda versions and should not be generalized to other six-cylinder engines. Check the owner’s manual or official specifications for the vehicle you are considering; do not assume that every turbo requires premium fuel or that every NA engine has the same requirement.

Emissions should also be compared using certified values or standards for the same market and model year. Engine-development or manufacturer efficiency claims do not substitute for certification data for a particular vehicle. When comparing vehicles, make sure the emissions information refers to equivalent markets and model years rather than treating an engine maker’s efficiency statement as a certified result.
A turbo system adds hardware, including the turbocharger, charge-air plumbing and cooling, and related controls. That is a design difference, not proof that turbo engines are universally less reliable or cost more to maintain. The available evidence does not establish a general reliability or service-cost winner. For a specific vehicle, check its warranty, service schedule and model-specific reliability record. The presence of additional components is a reason to review those vehicle-specific facts, not a substitute for them.
Examples show the range—not a universal winner
Honda’s related V6 versions
The Honda 2023 technical paper describes a newly developed 3.5 L NA V6 and a 3.0 L turbo V6 that share major architecture. Alongside their rated power and torque, Honda reports maximum thermal efficiency of 37.5% for the developed NA engine and 36.5% for the turbo engine. The versions use different emissions categories and fuel grades, so these engine-development figures do not establish that NA engines are generally more efficient, or predict how two complete vehicles will compare at the pump. Honda 2023 V6 technical paper
The Honda example is useful because it puts concrete output and development figures beside related six-cylinder designs. It is still important to keep the measurement categories straight: rated engine output and maximum thermal efficiency are not vehicle fuel-economy ratings. The fuel grades and emissions categories differ as well. The comparison illustrates what these particular versions were designed to do; it does not settle the broader question of which induction type is more efficient in all applications.
Stellantis Hurricane inline-six
In a March 25, 2022 announcement, Stellantis reported standard-output ratings above 400 hp and 450 lb-ft for its 3.0 L twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six, and high-output ratings above 500 hp and 475 lb-ft. The company also said the engine provides at least 90% of peak torque from 2,350 rpm to redline and claimed up to 15% greater efficiency than larger engines. These are manufacturer-published claims; Stellantis says actual ratings vary by vehicle. They are not a controlled comparison with a naturally aspirated six-cylinder. Stellantis Hurricane announcement
The stated torque span helps explain why the announcement emphasizes torque available across a broad range, not just the peak number. But the ratings and efficiency statement are tied to Stellantis’ announcement and its engine application; actual ratings vary by vehicle, and the “up to” efficiency claim is a manufacturer claim against larger engines. It should not be read as a measured advantage over every NA six or as a vehicle-specific fuel-economy result.

Mazda’s resource page lists a 3.3 L turbo inline-six for the CX-70 and CX-90. That establishes examples of turbocharged sixes in the vehicles listed there; it does not provide a direct NA comparison or independently verified real-world economy result. Mazda turbo engine resource
The same Mazda page reports U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy data showing that 34% of light-duty vehicles were turbocharged in 2019, compared with less than 5% in 2009. Those are historical figures, not a current market-share estimate. They provide context for the growth in turbocharging in the light-duty fleet at that time, but they do not say what share of six-cylinder engines specifically were turbocharged. How to compare two vehicles before choosing
Compare the vehicles and their complete specifications, not just the engine labels. Use the same model year and market where possible, and check the following. This approach helps keep the decision focused on the vehicle you will actually buy and the work you expect it to do:
- Power and torque curves: Look for the published curve or rated rpm range to see when output is available and how long it lasts. A peak number alone can hide useful differences. Note whether a figure is a peak, a stated range or a manufacturer claim, and compare like with like.
- Response and drivability: Turbo size, twin-scroll design, controls, transmission gearing and vehicle calibration influence response. If possible, drive the actual models under conditions similar to your use. Do not infer that every turbo will feel delayed, or that every NA engine will feel more immediate, from the labels alone.
- Fuel economy: Use official figures for the exact model year, drivetrain and market. Consider whether your driving is mostly light-load commuting or includes sustained high power, towing or heavy loads. A downsized turbo can support efficiency in the right comparison, but heavy use of boost can increase consumption.
- Fuel requirement: Confirm the required grade for the specific engine and tune; do not assume every turbo requires premium fuel or that all NA engines use the same grade. Manufacturer specifications or the owner’s manual are the relevant references for the vehicle being considered.
- Emissions: Compare certified values or standards for equivalent vehicles in the same market and model year. Engine development figures and manufacturer claims are not a substitute for certified vehicle data.
- Towing and payload: Check the vehicle’s rated towing capacity, payload, cooling package and any engine or transmission conditions. Engine torque alone does not establish safe or rated towing capability. Also consider whether your expected use includes sustained load, since that affects fuel consumption.
- Warranty and service schedule: Review the manufacturer’s terms and maintenance requirements for the exact model. Added turbo hardware is a complexity difference, not a substitute for model-specific ownership evidence. Check model-specific reliability information instead of assuming a universal reliability ranking.
These checks also prevent a common comparison mistake: using an engine’s strongest advertised number to make a decision that depends on an entire vehicle. An engine rating does not tell you the vehicle’s weight, gearing, towing rating, certified economy or emissions. Make sure each figure is for the same market and model year, and distinguish manufacturer-published claims from certified results.

Inline-six versus V6 is a separate question
“Six-cylinder” specifies the number of cylinders; “inline-six” and “V6” describe how those cylinders are arranged. Induction is another independent choice. Either layout can be naturally aspirated or turbocharged, so an inline-six-versus-V6 comparison is not the same as a turbo-versus-NA comparison. The Honda examples above are V6s; the Stellantis Hurricane is an inline-six. The examples show that both layouts appear in turbocharged applications, but they do not provide a controlled layout comparison.

Which type should you choose?
Choose based on the vehicle’s actual output, response, efficiency, fuel requirement, towing ratings, warranty and maintenance schedule—not a blanket assumption that turbocharged or naturally aspirated is better. A turbo six can offer substantial torque and power from less displacement, while an NA six avoids the turbocharger system and does not need boost to build. Neither design earns a universal fuel-economy or reliability verdict without model-specific evidence.
If your priority is output from a smaller displacement or strong stated torque across a useful rpm range, examine the turbocharged vehicle’s specific ratings and how it is calibrated. If you are comparing complexity, note the turbo system hardware, then investigate the exact vehicle’s upkeep and reliability information instead of treating the component count as a verdict. If fuel economy is the priority, compare the official figures for the complete vehicles and account for your expected driving and load. The right answer is the vehicle that meets your requirements on evidence, not a rule about induction type.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a turbo six faster than a naturally aspirated six?
Not inherently. A turbo can make more power from less displacement, as Honda’s related 3.5 L NA and 3.0 L turbo V6 example illustrates, but acceleration also depends on vehicle mass, gearing, traction and tuning. Compare the actual vehicles rather than engine labels alone.
Does a turbocharged six get better gas mileage?
Sometimes, particularly when a smaller turbocharged engine replaces a larger one and is driven at modest loads. The EPA describes that downsizing pathway. Sustained boost, towing and other heavy loads can increase consumption, so use official economy figures for the exact model year, drivetrain and market.
Is an NA six more reliable?
The reviewed evidence does not establish a general reliability winner. A turbo system adds components such as the turbocharger, charge-air plumbing and cooling, and associated controls, but that fact alone does not prove a universal reliability or service-cost difference. Check model-specific reliability records, warranty terms and service schedules.
Does a turbo always have lag?
No single answer applies to every turbo. A delay between a throttle request and rising boost can occur, but turbo design and controls can reduce it. Honda reported that its twin-scroll setup reached 80% of maximum torque 0.5 seconds faster than its mono-scroll comparison at fixed 1,500 rpm during a load change; this was not a direct turbo-versus-NA test.
Are inline-sixes and V6s the same comparison?
No. Both have six cylinders, but an inline-six and V6 describe different cylinder layouts. Naturally aspirated versus turbocharged describes how the engine takes in air. Either layout can use either induction type, so compare layout and induction as separate questions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How should I compare two six-cylinder vehicles?
Compare power and torque curves or rated rpm ranges, response and gearing, official fuel economy and emissions for the same market and model year, fuel-grade requirements, towing and payload ratings, warranty terms and maintenance schedules. Engine peak output alone does not establish acceleration or towing capability.
The Bottom Line
A turbocharged six can produce strong output from less displacement, while a naturally aspirated six draws air without boost. Neither is automatically more efficient, responsive or reliable. Compare the exact vehicles’ ratings, official economy and emissions data, fuel requirements, towing specifications, warranty and service schedule.
