At an August 2024 rally in Atlanta, Donald Trump said, “I’m for electric cars. I have to be because Elon endorsed me very strongly.” He was describing support for electric cars as an option—not saying everyone should be required to own one.
What Trump said in Atlanta
The remark came after Elon Musk endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. The Associated Press quoted Trump linking his stated support for electric cars directly to that endorsement: “I’m for electric cars. I have to be because Elon endorsed me very strongly.” The AP account describes Trump’s tone as shifting toward acknowledging that EVs could work for some buyers.
The line is striking because it gives a personal, political reason for his support. But it does not, by itself, establish support for a policy requiring Americans to switch to electric vehicles.
His qualification: electric cars should be a choice
Trump made the distinction explicit in remarks around the Atlanta rally. At the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville on July 27, 2024, he said: “And, you know, I love Elon. He’s great. He endorsed me and great endorsement and everything else. But not everybody has to have an electric car.” The Roll Call / Factbase transcript records the statement.

Four days later, at the National Association of Black Journalists conference, Trump said Musk was his friend, then added that he was “against everybody having an electric car,” according to Reuters. Read together, the comments point to a distinction between accepting EVs as an available option and opposing a requirement that everyone own one.
How the comment fits his changing rhetoric
Trump’s public comments on electric vehicles have not been consistent. The AP’s account notes earlier criticism of EV range and cost, a public compliment for an electric truck in 2020, the Atlanta statement, later praise of Tesla, and continued opposition to what he calls an EV mandate. The Atlanta line is best understood as qualified support for the vehicles themselves, not an abandonment of his opposition to policies he says would compel buyers to choose them.

What Trump said and did about EVs in 2025
White House Tesla event
At a White House Tesla display on March 11, 2025, Trump praised Tesla and its products. The AP reported that he selected a red Model S, said he intended to pay full price, and hoped his purchase would help the company’s stock. This was a separate event from the Atlanta rally. California emissions waivers
On June 12, 2025, Trump said he had signed congressional resolutions disapproving three EPA waivers for California vehicle-emissions programs. In a White House statement, he characterized the action as preventing a nationwide electric-vehicle mandate and “ending the electric vehicle mandate for good.” That is the administration’s description of the action, not an independent analysis of its legal effects.

“Electric cars are fine”
On July 1, 2025, Trump wrote, “Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one.” The archived post also repeated his claim that opposition to an EV mandate had long been part of his campaign.
