For a fair comparison, match trims: Street Triple R against the standard MT-09, or Street Triple RS against the MT-09 SP. Model year, market, and equipment matter, so compare local out-the-door quotes and ride both before deciding.
Which is better, the MT-09 or Street Triple?
There is no universal winner. The Street Triple’s strongest case is control and composure: an independent back-to-back road test of older versions found the Triumph smoother, more precise, and more settled, with the advantage in suspension and brake feel. The Yamaha’s case is character: the same reviewer found it more torquey, lively, and unruly, and preferred it for road-only riding. That test recommended the Triumph for road use that includes occasional track sessions. Those are reviewer impressions of older motorcycles, not proof from a current-generation head-to-head test.

For everyday road riding, pick the bike whose engine response, riding position, and chassis feel you prefer at real speeds—not the one with the bigger displacement or a more impressive peak number. Riders who value sharp feedback and a planted feel should start with the Street Triple. Riders who want a more exuberant character should start with the MT-09. Either decision should be made between comparable trims, with the intended use and local price in view.

So, which is better, MT-09 or Street Triple? The answer depends on what “better” means in your riding. If your priority is a composed feel and a bike that the cited older comparison favored for occasional circuit use, the Triumph deserves the first test ride. If you want a more lively road character and the Yamaha’s torque-focused reputation appeals, begin with the MT-09. The road-test verdict is a helpful starting point, not a substitute for trying the current bikes yourself.

Compare equivalent trims, not just model names
Triumph sells the Street Triple 765 in distinct R and RS versions. Yamaha’s MT-09 also has standard and premium SP versions; the 2025 comparison below additionally concerns the Y-AMT variant, not the standard MT-09. Equipment and availability can vary by country and model year, so use each manufacturer’s current market-specific model page to confirm the exact bike being quoted.
| Shopping question | More like-for-like pairing | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Which entry or value versions should I compare? | Street Triple R vs. standard MT-09 | These are the more budget-conscious versions to price against one another. The R’s US starting price is not an RS price. |
| Which premium versions should I compare? | Street Triple RS vs. MT-09 SP | This better aligns a premium-equipment comparison. Confirm current suspension, brakes, electronics, and other equipment on each local specification page. |
These pairings are a way to structure a shopping decision, not a claim that every component or feature matches exactly. If one dealer quotes an R and the other an SP, you are comparing both equipment and price tier, not just the motorcycle’s basic character.
That distinction matters when reading reviews and spec comparisons, too. A review of an RS against an MT-09 does not automatically tell you how the R compares with the standard Yamaha, and an SP may not have the same equipment as a standard MT-09. Start by writing down the exact trim and model year you want. Then compare the features that matter to you on the appropriate market pages rather than assuming that a shared model name means the bikes are identically equipped everywhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEngine character and performance figures
The current US MT-09 is an 890 cc inline triple. Triumph’s current Street Triple family uses a 765 cc inline triple; Triumph’s US specification page lists 120 PS (118.4 hp) for the R. Check the selected market’s page and exact trim for RS output rather than assuming the R figure also describes the RS. The manufacturer specifications establish engine size and listed output, but those figures alone do not tell you how each engine feels when you open the throttle.
A 1000PS comparison of the 2025 Street Triple R and 2025 MT-09 Y-AMT lists 120 hp and 80 Nm for the Triumph, versus 119 hp and 93 Nm for the Yamaha. In that particular comparison, peak horsepower is close while the Yamaha has the higher listed peak torque. The figures belong to those named 2025 variants and the publisher’s data; they should not be transferred to a different year, trim, transmission, or market without checking the specifications.
| Published figure | 2025 Street Triple R | 2025 MT-09 Y-AMT | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 120 hp | 119 hp | 1000PS comparison of these 2025 versions. |
| Peak torque | 80 Nm | 93 Nm | 1000PS comparison of these 2025 versions. |
| Kerb weight | 189 kg | 196 kg | 1000PS comparison of these 2025 versions; do not treat as a direct comparison with Yamaha’s 2026 US wet-weight figure. |
| Seat height | 826 mm | 825 mm | 1000PS comparison of these 2025 versions. |
Peak torque can help describe the size of a published output figure, but it does not establish a complete ranking of throttle response, tractability, or acceleration. Those depend on more than displacement and a peak number. The older Visordown road test’s description of the Yamaha as torquier and more lively, and the Triumph as smoother and more precise, is useful context for what a rider might notice—but it is a subjective impression from earlier models, not a current controlled measurement.
In practical shopping terms, use the figures to frame questions rather than declare a winner. The close horsepower figures in the 2025 comparison do not mean the motorcycles deliver power identically, and the torque figures do not by themselves establish how either one will feel in your usual riding. Ask the dealer which exact year and transmission the bike is, then judge the throttle response for yourself on a test ride. If you are comparing a current standard MT-09 with a Street Triple R, do not present the 2025 Y-AMT comparison as if it were a same-year, same-variant test of those showroom bikes.

Handling, suspension, braking, and occasional track use
For a rider choosing between these bikes partly on chassis feel, the available direct riding comparison favors the Street Triple for stability and suspension composure. Visordown’s UK road test, updated May 10, 2024, compared an older Street Triple 765 RS with an older MT-09. Its reviewer also favored the Triumph’s brake feel and pointed to it as the better choice for road riding that includes occasional track use. The verdict was Yamaha for road-only use and Triumph for road plus occasional track use.
That conclusion is best treated as a useful riding impression, not a guarantee about every current R, RS, standard MT-09, or SP. It does not establish that the latest motorcycles were tested against one another, nor does it provide a current instrumented braking or suspension comparison. If track sessions are part of your plan, compare the specific trims’ current equipment, check local availability, and arrange a test ride that includes the kind of riding you expect to do. A premium trim may be the more relevant comparison than an entry version, but confirm its actual equipment for your market.
The character distinction is important even if you never visit a circuit. A more composed chassis can feel reassuring when the road gets uneven or the pace rises; a livelier response may be more entertaining during ordinary road rides. Neither quality is inherently better for every rider. Assess how the bike responds to your inputs and whether the suspension and braking feel predictable to you.
When you test ride, focus on the qualities the comparison actually discusses: how settled the chassis feels, how the suspension responds to the roads you ride, and whether the brakes give you confidence. A short ride cannot reproduce track conditions, and the older review is not a current head-to-head test, but it can help you decide what to pay attention to. If you expect to ride on track only occasionally, consider whether the higher equipment tier is worth its local price to you; the available facts do not establish a universal cost or equipment advantage for either premium model.
Fit and everyday use
Yamaha lists a 32.5-inch seat height for the 2026 US MT-09. The 2025 1000PS comparison lists seat heights of 826 mm for the Street Triple R and 825 mm for the MT-09 Y-AMT, a near match in those two versions. Do not use one set of seat-height figures as a substitute for checking the model year and trim you plan to buy.
A published seat height does not determine whether a motorcycle will feel comfortable or manageable for a particular rider. Seat shape, leg length, how the bike balances when stopped, and the rider’s confidence all affect fit. Sit on the exact version if possible, and ask for a test ride rather than making a decision from a specification sheet alone.
For the 2026 MT-09 in the United States, Yamaha lists a 425 lb wet weight, a 3.7-gallon fuel tank, and estimated fuel economy of 48 mpg. Yamaha labels the fuel-economy figure an estimate. These are useful planning numbers for that US model, but they do not say how far every rider will travel between fill-ups or what the bike will weigh in a different market or trim. Triumph’s current US starting-price page and specification page distinguish the R and RS; consult the exact specification sheet for the version under consideration instead of filling gaps with a different trim’s figures.

The MT-09’s listed tank capacity and estimated economy may help with rough planning, but 48 mpg is not a guaranteed result for each rider or route. Riding conditions and individual use can change actual consumption. Likewise, the Yamaha’s US wet-weight figure is tied to that model page; it should not be directly set against the 189 kg and 196 kg kerb weights from the 2025 1000PS comparison without accounting for the different year, variants, and published measurement context.

Current US price and what the numbers include
For the United States, Triumph lists the Street Triple 765 R at a starting price of $10,595. That is a manufacturer-listed entry price for the R, not the RS and not an out-the-door quote. Yamaha lists the 2026 MT-09 at $10,899 MSRP, with a $700 destination charge. Yamaha says MSRP excludes taxes, title, preparation, and destination, so the listed MSRP is not the final amount due.
| Model and market | Published price | What it does and does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Triumph Street Triple 765 R, US | $10,595 starting price | Triumph’s listed R starting price; not an RS price or out-the-door total. |
| Yamaha MT-09, 2026 US | $10,899 MSRP plus $700 destination | Yamaha states MSRP excludes taxes, title, preparation, and destination. Request the dealer’s complete quote. |
These figures are not a clean R-versus-standard price verdict: they are manufacturer-listed starting amounts for different brands and are not complete local purchase quotes. They do not establish the price of the RS or MT-09 SP. Dealer charges, taxes, registration, available inventory, and any qualifying offer can change what a buyer actually pays. Ask for written out-the-door quotes for matching trims in your area.
For an apples-to-apples shopping exercise, request the price of the exact R and standard MT-09 you would actually buy, or the RS and SP if you are comparing premium versions. Ask each dealer to itemize destination or delivery, taxes, title, registration, preparation, and other charges. The published US amounts are useful starting points, but they do not show your local final price or confirm that a bike is in stock. The comparison should be based on written quotes for the same purchase timing and, as far as possible, equivalent equipment tiers.
Yamaha’s US model page displayed promotional financing and up to $500 customer cash for selected models during October 1 through December 31, 2026, subject to terms and eligibility. That offer is time-limited and conditional, not a permanent MT-09 discount or a benefit every buyer can expect. Check the current offer details and whether the exact model and buyer qualify before using it in a price comparison.
Promotional financing and customer cash are not interchangeable with a universal price reduction: the offer has a stated period and eligibility terms, and it applies to selected models. Confirm the exact model, buyer requirements, and current dates with Yamaha or a dealer. Compare any qualifying offer with the complete quote and financing terms rather than assuming it applies to every MT-09 buyer.

The 2026 US MT-09 specification page also lists a six-speed transmission, an adjustable 41 mm front fork, and an adjustable rear shock. These are manufacturer specifications for the stated US model year; verify the exact version you are considering because trim and market can affect equipment. The figures do not replace a comparison of the current Street Triple R or RS specification sheet.
Finally, purchase price is only one part of the decision. Obtain insurance quotes for the exact motorcycles and ask local dealers about service availability and maintenance requirements for the model year and trim you are considering. The available price figures do not establish which bike will cost less to insure, maintain, or own in your area.

How to make a fair buying decision
- Write down your intended use. Decide whether the bike will be primarily a road machine or whether occasional track sessions and chassis composure are meaningful priorities. The older direct test points toward different strengths for those uses.
- Choose the trim tier first. Start with Street Triple R versus standard MT-09 for a more budget-conscious pairing, or RS versus SP for a premium-equipment comparison. Do not use the 2025 MT-09 Y-AMT data as if it describes every MT-09.
- Match year and market. Put the exact year, trim, and transmission on both quote requests. Use each manufacturer’s local specification page to verify output, dimensions, and equipment. Specs and prices cited here describe either current US manufacturer pages checked October 9, 2026, or a separately identified 2025 comparison.
- Get complete local quotes. Ask each dealer for the out-the-door figure, with destination, taxes, title, registration, preparation, and other charges itemized. Ask separately about financing or customer-cash eligibility and its dates and terms.
- Sit on and ride both. Check whether you can manage the bike at a stop and whether the riding position suits you. During a ride, pay attention to throttle response, chassis feel, braking confidence, and how the bike behaves on the kinds of roads you actually use.
- Compare ownership support in your area. Check local dealer access, service availability, maintenance requirements for the exact model, and insurance quotes. The published figures here do not establish which bike will cost less to own for a particular rider.
Keep your notes specific after each ride. Record which model and trim you rode, how the engine response felt to you, whether the chassis felt composed or lively, and how confident you were with the brakes and fit. That makes it easier to separate your own impressions from claims drawn from a test of older versions or from numbers published for a different trim.
If a dealer can only offer a different trim or model year than the one you planned to compare, treat that as a different comparison rather than silently substituting it. Recheck the equipment and quote for the bike actually available. For a decision between the Street Triple R and standard MT-09, the goal is not to make every specification look identical; it is to know exactly what you are paying for and how each motorcycle suits your riding.
Why older comparison figures should not decide a current purchase
The Visordown article is a UK road test updated May 10, 2024, but its prices and output figures concern the earlier motorcycles it tested. It cites historical figures such as £7,799 and 115 hp for the Yamaha, and £9,900 and a claimed 123 hp for the Triumph. Those numbers provide historical context only; they are not current prices or specifications for the 2026 US MT-09 or today’s Street Triple trims.
Likewise, the 1000PS numbers are specific to a 2025 R and Y-AMT comparison. They may help frame engine output and dimensions for those exact versions, but they should not be mixed into a current US price table or used as specifications for a different trim. For a purchase today, the manufacturer’s current market page is the better source for the exact model’s official details, while a road test is evidence of one reviewer’s experience under the conditions of that ride.
Use the older riding comparison for its stated subjective observations, not as a specification sheet for current showroom motorcycles. Its UK context and earlier tested versions explain why its prices and output figures differ from the current US manufacturer listings. Similarly, use 1000PS’s figures only for the 2025 Street Triple R and MT-09 Y-AMT it names. Keeping those scopes separate prevents a trim or year mismatch from turning into a misleading price or performance comparison.

Which naked bike should you buy?
Buy the Street Triple if you favor precision, stability, suspension and brake composure, and want a bike that the available older comparison recommends for road use with occasional track days. Buy the MT-09 if its livelier, more torque-focused road character is what you want and its local quote makes better sense. Compare R with standard MT-09 for a more accessible price tier; compare RS with SP when premium equipment is the point. The right choice is the one that fits your riding, trim, and budget after a test ride and a complete local quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, the MT-09 or Street Triple?
Neither is a universal winner. An older Visordown comparison found the Yamaha livelier and more torquey, while the Triumph felt smoother, more precise, and more composed. The reviewer favored the Yamaha for road-only use and the Triumph for road riding with occasional track sessions. Ride current, comparable trims to decide which character suits you.
Should I compare the Street Triple R or RS with the MT-09?
For a more budget-conscious comparison, start with the Street Triple R and standard MT-09. For a premium-equipment comparison, compare the Street Triple RS with the MT-09 SP. Confirm each market’s current equipment and price; the R’s US starting price is not an RS price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is the MT-09 more powerful than the Street Triple?
The answer depends on the exact year and trim. The 2025 1000PS comparison lists 120 hp for the Street Triple R and 119 hp for the MT-09 Y-AMT, with 80 Nm and 93 Nm of peak torque respectively. Those figures apply to those versions only; they do not establish how different current models feel or perform.
What does the 2026 Yamaha MT-09 cost in the US?
Yamaha lists $10,899 MSRP plus a $700 destination charge for the 2026 MT-09. Taxes, title, preparation, and destination are excluded from MSRP, so request a complete local out-the-door quote. Triumph’s $10,595 US starting price is for the Street Triple R, not the RS.
Is the Yamaha MT-09 seat height lower than the Street Triple’s?
The 2026 US MT-09 is listed at 32.5 inches. A separate 1000PS comparison of 2025 versions lists 825 mm for the MT-09 Y-AMT and 826 mm for the Street Triple R. Those measurements are close, but they refer to different stated model versions; sit on and test ride the exact bikes you are considering.
Should I buy a Street Triple for occasional track days?
The older Visordown comparison favored the Street Triple 765 RS for road use that includes occasional track sessions, citing its composure, suspension, and brake feel. That is a reviewer’s impression of older models, not a current head-to-head test. Compare current trim equipment and ride the specific bike before deciding.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Shortlist the Street Triple for precision, composure, and occasional track use; shortlist the MT-09 for a livelier, torque-focused road character. Compare the R with the standard MT-09 for a value-tier decision, or the RS with the SP for a premium-tier one. Match model year and market, ride both, and decide using complete local quotes.
