The Triumph Speed 400 is the roadster-oriented choice; the Scrambler 400 X is taller and equipped for light all-road use. In Triumph’s US listings, the Speed 400 starts at $5,495 and the Scrambler 400 X at $6,195, a $700 difference in listed starting price. Choose between them mainly by your riding surface, preferred seat reach and need for extra protection—not by assuming the Scrambler is a dedicated off-road bike.
How the two Triumph 400s differ
Triumph positions the Speed 400 as a Modern Classic roadster and the Scrambler 400 X as an all-road motorcycle. That distinction shows up in the Scrambler’s taller stance, larger front wheel, longer suspension travel, wide handlebars, handguards and protective equipment. The Speed is the more road-focused option; the Scrambler is intended to broaden the kinds of roads and light trails you can tackle.
The official material available for this comparison provides a detailed specification for the Scrambler 400 X, but not a matching Speed 400 specification table. The table therefore compares only confirmed figures and avoids guessed Speed dimensions or performance differences.

Which is better for commuting and ordinary road use?
For a rider whose use is mainly paved streets, commuting and weekend road rides, the Speed 400’s roadster positioning is the more direct fit. The Scrambler 400 X remains a road-going motorcycle, but its taller setup and trail-oriented features make more sense if your routes also include rough pavement, gravel roads or light tracks.
Do not infer that the Speed is lighter, lower or faster from the available comparison figures: a matching official Speed 400 specification table was not established here. If weight, seat reach or a particular performance number will decide the purchase, check the specification for your country and model year with Triumph or a local dealer.

What the Scrambler 400 X’s setup changes
Wheels and suspension
The Scrambler 400 X’s 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, together with 150 mm of travel at both ends, reflect its broader-surface remit. Those specifications are useful context when comparing the bikes for broken pavement or occasional unpaved routes, but they do not establish that it will outperform the Speed on every road or suit every rider better.
Seat reach and low-speed handling
At 835 mm, the Scrambler 400 X has a seat height worth checking in person, particularly if you are shorter or new to motorcycles. Seat height alone does not determine whether a bike feels manageable: seat shape, inseam, footwear, balance and the effort needed to push or turn it at walking pace all matter. Triumph lists the Scrambler’s wet weight as 179 kg; that is the motorcycle’s weight, not its payload limit.

Protection and riding position
Triumph describes the Scrambler 400 X with upright ergonomics, wide handlebars, handguards and protective features. Those are relevant if you value a more commanding stance or expect occasional rougher surfaces. Compare the actual equipment on the bikes offered in your market, since Triumph notes that equipment can vary by market.
Can the Scrambler 400 X handle off-road trails?
Yes, within a light-trail brief. Triumph’s T-Series FAQ says the Scrambler 400 X “has been designed to tackle light off-road tracks and trails.” That is not a claim that it is a dedicated dirt bike or suited to demanding off-road riding. Match the bike to the surface and difficulty you actually expect to ride.

- This tank pad is compatible with the following Triumph motorcycle models:
- SCRAMBLER 400 X SPEED 400
Also distinguish the Scrambler 400 X from the Scrambler 400 XC. Triumph announced the XC as a separate model in July 2025; do not assume the X includes the XC’s wire-spoked wheels, tubeless tires or added protection.

Shared running figures
Triumph states claimed fuel consumption of 3.5 L/100 km (80.7 mpg) for both models. The manufacturer gives a T-Series service interval of 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. These are manufacturer figures, not results from an independent side-by-side test.
Triumph’s FAQ states a maximum payload of 179 kg, including rider, passenger, luggage and accessories. This is separate from the Scrambler 400 X’s 179 kg wet weight; do not treat the two figures as interchangeable. Check the owner’s manual and local-market documentation for the exact motorcycle before loading it.
How to choose between them
- Start with your roads. Choose the Speed 400 if your riding is overwhelmingly paved and roadster-oriented. Consider the Scrambler 400 X if light gravel or trail riding is part of the plan.
- Try the Scrambler’s seat and controls. Sit on it in riding boots, assess how securely you can put a foot down, and test the handlebar reach and standing position if you expect to ride unpaved routes.
- Check slow-speed effort. During a test ride, pay attention to turning, parking, reversing and managing the bike on uneven ground—not only how it feels once underway.
- Verify the exact local specification and quote. Confirm model year, equipment, final price and any market-specific differences with an authorized Triumph dealer. Triumph’s US site offers dealer and test-ride pathways.
Triumph lists more than 25 genuine accessories for the T-Series range. Verify that any accessory you want fits the precise model year and market; availability across the range does not guarantee compatibility with both bikes.
