Choose the Bonneville T40 Black if its classic Bonneville styling and the equipment listed for it in India—such as navigation, cornering aids and cruise control—matter more to you. That is a comparison of Triumph’s India-market product pages, not a verdict from a side-by-side road test. Prices, equipment and specifications can differ by market and variant, so compare current local quotes before deciding.
At a glance: what the India-market listings say
The two motorcycles share a 349 cc displacement, but the published specifications and design cues point to different priorities. Triumph’s India pages list the Bonneville T40 Black, rather than every T40 variant, and a Speed 400 starting price. The price entries are therefore not perfectly like-for-like.

Unless otherwise specified, specifications and prices above are from Triumph India product pages reviewed in 2026. The table describes what these pages list, not every possible market or model-year configuration.

Price: compare actual quotes, not just the page figures
The displayed figures differ by ₹44,672, with the Speed 400’s listed starting price lower. That arithmetic does not establish a like-for-like national price gap: one figure is for a T40 Black in Delhi and the other is a Speed 400 starting price. City, variant, taxes, insurance, registration, dealer charges and current availability can change what a buyer actually pays.

Ask the same dealership—or dealerships in the same city—for an itemized quote for the precise variant you intend to buy. Request the ex-showroom amount, registration and road tax, insurance, any optional accessories, and any other charges as separate lines. Then compare the final on-road totals and the included equipment. Do not treat an advertised starting price as the amount you will pay at delivery.
- Specify the exact motorcycle. Confirm that the quote is for the T40 Black or the particular Speed 400 version available to you, and ask whether the quoted vehicle is in stock.
- Ask for a written, itemized on-road quote. Confirm the city, insurance coverage, registration costs, and whether accessories are optional or included.
- Compare like with like. If one quote includes add-ons and the other does not, ask for a second version without optional items.
- Check the date and validity. Prices and offers can change; reconfirm them immediately before booking.
- Review financing separately. Compare the down payment, interest rate, fees, loan term and total repayment rather than judging a bike by the monthly instalment alone.
This makes the price decision more useful than subtracting two webpage figures: it shows the amount required to buy each specific motorcycle in your city and what that amount includes.
Engine figures: what they establish—and what they do not
On the published India figures, the Speed 400 has the higher peak-power rating. The T40’s listed torque peak occurs at a lower engine speed than the Speed’s. That is a meaningful difference in the specifications, but it is not a road test. Peak figures alone cannot establish which bike accelerates harder in a particular gear, feels stronger in everyday traffic, overtakes more quickly, or is smoother at a given speed.
For the T40, the India page’s headline torque figure is rounded; its body text gives a more precise peak and engine speed. Keep that distinction intact rather than treating the rounded and more precise figures as competing measurements. The Speed page states its torque and power peaks with engine speeds. Those figures describe rated output at specified engine speeds, not what the engine produces across the entire rev range.

A separate global T40 page uses a different market’s units and specifications: it describes a dedicated 400 cc tune producing 30 bhp at 7,000 rpm and 26.6 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. Those global-market figures are not interchangeable with the India T40 listing and should not be combined with India specifications as though they were the same homologation data. See Triumph’s global Bonneville T40 page only if you are considering that market’s model.
If engine character is central to your choice, use the figures to frame a test ride rather than predict the result. Ride each motorcycle where permitted, paying attention to low-speed response, clutch and throttle control, gear changes and the speeds you actually use. Treat any difference you perceive as your own riding impression, not a conclusion established by the specification sheets.
Styling, wheels and suspension: choose the package you want to live with
Bonneville T40 Black
The India listing gives the T40 Black a recognisably traditional Bonneville presentation: spoked wheels, conventional-looking forks, twin rear shocks and a peashooter-style silencer. The silhouette and hardware details are central to its appeal if you want a motorcycle that visibly leans into classic styling. Triumph also describes relaxed ergonomics and a low seat, but the India page reviewed does not provide a numeric seat height or weight.
Speed 400
The Speed 400 takes a more contemporary roadster approach. Its listed cast wheels and upside-down fork at the front, paired with a rear monoshock, create a different visual and chassis presentation from the T40’s spoked-wheel and twin-shock package. Those are observable design and equipment differences; they do not, by themselves, prove that one motorcycle handles better.

Make the styling decision in person if possible. Photographs can communicate silhouette and finish, but they cannot tell you whether the riding position, reach to the controls or the motorcycle’s balance at a stop suits your body and confidence. Consider which visual details you will still value after the novelty of a new purchase wears off.
Electronics and everyday equipment
The India product pages show a clear difference in listed electronic equipment. The T40 Black page names a 4-inch circular TFT with navigation and phone and music connectivity, five riding modes, lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and traction control, plus cruise control. The Speed 400 page lists a dual-format analogue/digital display and ABS at both brakes.
This is a comparison of the equipment stated on those specific pages. An item missing from one page is not proof that it is unavailable in every market, variant or model year. Before paying a premium for a feature, ask the dealer to demonstrate how it works on the actual motorcycle you are buying. In particular, check how navigation and phone functions connect, what information the display shows, and which rider aids can be adjusted. Confirm whether any feature depends on a compatible phone or other conditions before treating it as essential.
Recommended Free Tools
Think about whether the additional features change your own use. A rider who values integrated navigation, selectable modes or cruise control may place a higher value on the T40’s listed kit. Someone who wants a simpler display and prefers to choose on styling, price and engine output may not assign the same value to those items. The useful question is not which equipment list is longer, but which listed features you expect to use and whether they justify the difference in your local quote.

- This tank pad is compatible with the following Triumph motorcycle models:
- SCRAMBLER 400 X SPEED 400
Fit, seat reach and low-speed confidence
The India Speed 400 page gives a seat height of 803 mm and a wet weight of 179 kg, along with a 13 L fuel capacity. The India T40 page reviewed does not state numeric seat-height or weight figures. Triumph’s global T40 page lists 31.1 inches and 421 lb fueled, but those are global-market figures with a different measurement context; they are not a clean India-market comparison.
Numbers are a screening tool, not a substitute for sitting on the motorcycle. Seat shape and width affect how far your legs reach around the bike, while suspension sag, footwear, body proportions and load can affect how planted you feel. On a dealer visit, sit on both motorcycles in your normal riding footwear. Check whether you can support the bike comfortably, reach the controls without strain, turn the bars at a standstill and manage a slow turn with confidence. If available, ask to experience each motorcycle in a permitted test ride rather than relying on a showroom pose.
Triumph’s T40 test-ride instructions tell riders to bring a valid driving licence, helmet and gloves. Confirm the dealer’s current requirements and ride availability before travelling. Do not assume that the global T40 dimensions apply to an India-market bike; ask the local dealer for the applicable specification or owner information if a numeric comparison is important to you.
Service intervals and ownership questions to verify
The India pages list a 16,000 km service interval for each motorcycle; the Speed 400 page also specifies 12 months, whichever comes first. A service interval alone does not tell you the cost of servicing, the price of replacement parts, the warranty terms or how much fuel the motorcycle will use. No comparative fuel-economy, reliability or ownership-cost result is established by the cited product pages, so do not use those figures as a proxy for one.

Before booking, ask a local authorised dealer for the current maintenance schedule and a written explanation of what is due at each service. Confirm whether the time limit applies even if you ride fewer kilometres, what warranty applies to your exact variant, and which costs are included or excluded. If the dealership will provide a service estimate, ask for the labour and likely consumables as separate figures and confirm that the estimate is not a guarantee of future costs.
- Confirm the interval and schedule in the owner’s manual for your market and model year.
- Ask about warranty duration, conditions, and what documentation is needed to keep coverage valid.
- Check the dealer’s service location and appointment process against where you expect to ride and live.
- Ask for current prices or estimates for scheduled work rather than inferring low running costs from long intervals.
- Verify insurance, registration and delivery charges in the same city quote used for the purchase comparison.
India-specific information matters: the global T40 page gives a 10,000-mile service interval, which is a different market’s published figure. Use the local manual and dealer terms for an India purchase, not a figure copied from another country’s page.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Speed 400 if
- The lower starting figure shown on Triumph India’s page is a priority, subject to a current local quote.
- You place greater weight on the higher published peak-power figure.
- You prefer the modern roadster appearance, cast wheels and monoshock presentation.
- You want India-page seat-height, wet-weight and fuel-capacity figures for an initial fit and specification check.
- The simpler equipment list shown on the India page covers what you need.
Choose the Bonneville T40 Black if
- The classic Bonneville silhouette, spoked wheels, twin shocks and traditional styling are the draw.
- You value the T40 page’s listed TFT connectivity, riding modes, cornering aids and cruise control.
- The lower engine-speed torque peak in the published figures is relevant to your comparison, while recognising that it does not predict a real-world riding result on its own.
- You have confirmed the exact T40 variant and local price rather than assuming the Black listing applies to the full range.
If the choices remain close, make the decision in this order: confirm that each bike fits you; obtain like-for-like on-road quotes; decide which design you want; then weigh the published engine and equipment differences against your real riding priorities. A dealer visit and ride, where available, can answer questions about fit and feel that a specification sheet cannot.

The manufacturer pages are useful for published prices, specifications and listed equipment, but they are not independent comparative tests. They do not establish measured acceleration, fuel economy, braking distance, comparative comfort, reliability, sales rank or total ownership cost. Nor does the fact that one page lists a feature and another does not prove that feature is absent from every version of the second motorcycle. Confirm the exact variant, market and model year with the dealer, and treat riding impressions as something to establish for yourself.
