How Toyota and Subaru compare in Consumer Reports’ rankings
Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand report card ranks Toyota first, Subaru second and Lexus third for reliability. The report draws on owner surveys covering about 380,000 vehicles from model years 2000–2025 and early 2026. The order has changed from the preceding report: Consumer Reports’ 2025 reliability ranking placed Subaru first, with Lexus and Toyota behind it. That survey covered about 300,000 vehicles from model years 2000–2024 and early 2025. The shift shows why a brand ranking should be read as a result for a particular survey year and vehicle pool, rather than as a permanent pecking order. Why another reliability study gives a different order
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study ranked Mazda second among mass-market brands at 161 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), just ahead of Toyota at 162 PP100. That study measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles; a lower PP100 score represents fewer reported problems. Its result does not directly overturn Consumer Reports’ Toyota–Subaru ranking because the publishers use different measures and vehicle cohorts. Their positions should not be merged into one scale. What the rankings can—and cannot—tell a car shopper
A brand-level position summarizes results across vehicles; it does not prove that every model in that brand performs equally well. The headline does not specify a Toyota model, Subaru model, model year, vehicle class or price range, so it cannot support a particular vehicle-versus-vehicle recommendation. For a purchase decision, compare the specific models and years you are considering, rather than choosing on brand rank alone.
The Consumer Reports results are U.S.-market predictions drawn from member owners’ survey responses. They are useful for comparing reported patterns across brands, but they are not a guarantee about an individual car. J.D. Power’s 2025 result addresses reported problems among three-year-old vehicles, a different question from Consumer Reports’ predicted reliability ranking. Rankings can move as survey years and vehicle cohorts change.
