Toyota says its new Sora fuel-cell route bus can travel over 300 km—about 100 km farther than the first-generation model. But Toyota’s October 5, 2026 announcement does not say the increase is 50%; it gives the distance increase, not a percentage. The range is a Toyota reference figure, not an independently verified real-world result.
How far can Toyota’s new hydrogen bus travel?
Toyota lists the new Sora’s cruising range as over 300 km, an increase of about 100 km compared with the first-generation Sora. Toyota describes the range as a reference value based on its own measurements. It says actual range varies with temperature, traffic, passenger load and air-conditioning use. The announcement does not specify a test cycle or provide an independent road-test figure.
The “50% more range” wording is not in Toyota’s release. Toyota’s figures establish an increase of about 100 km and a new total above 300 km, but do not state the precise first-generation baseline used to calculate a percentage. The percentage should therefore not be presented as Toyota’s claim.
What changed from the first-generation Sora?
Toyota says the first-generation Sora launched in 2018. Its October 2026 announcement says the new bus has about 20% less total hydrogen tank capacity while adding about 100 km of cruising range. The comparison involves buses with different listed passenger capacities and configurations, so it is not a like-for-like specification comparison.

| Specification | New Sora (Toyota, 2026) | First-generation Sora (Toyota, 2018) |
|---|---|---|
| Stated cruising range | Over 300 km; Toyota reference value based on its measurements | Not stated in the cited 2018 production announcement |
| Change in range | About 100 km more than first generation, according to Toyota | — |
| Hydrogen tank configuration | Three tanks, rated at 70 MPa | Ten tanks, rated at 70 MPa |
| Total tank volume | 471 L | 600 L total internal volume |
| Listed passenger capacity | Urban model: 70 people total—19 seated, 50 standing and one crew member | 79 people total—22 seated, 56 standing and one driver |
The two announcements list different occupant totals and seating figures; the new bus is offered in four variants, including urban and suburban versions with different seat layouts. These capacity figures should not be treated as identical configurations.
How the new Sora is configured
The new Sora was jointly developed by Toyota Motor Corporation and Isuzu Motors Limited. Toyota says it combines Isuzu’s battery-electric, full-flat route-bus platform with Toyota’s fuel-cell system. Its urban model has a full-flat passenger floor and a listed capacity of 70 people.

Toyota specifies three high-pressure hydrogen tanks rated at 70 MPa, with a total listed volume of 471 L for the new urban model. The company says the optional one-touch wheelchair securement system is expected to be available to order from around April 2027. It also describes external power supply through a connected power-supply unit.
Refueling time depends on the station
Toyota gives about 10 minutes as a reference time for a full refueling. It cautions that actual time depends on hydrogen-station capacity and ambient temperature, so the figure should not be read as a guaranteed turnaround at every depot.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
Toyota says compatible stations using a new high-speed filling standard could reduce refueling time by about half once they are deployed. That is a future possibility dependent on compatible infrastructure, not a capability Toyota says is universally available now.

The announced specifications provide a starting point for fleet evaluation, not enough information to establish cost or route suitability. A transit agency considering the bus would need to assess:

- 1. Electrical part: motor with wind shoulder, ammeter, voltmeter.
- 2. Ammonia fuel cell.Hydrogen's electrons travel from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the electrons, protons, and oxygen in the air combine to produce water, which is the main by-product of the fuel cell.
- 3. PEM (proton exchange) water electrolyzer.Gaseous hydrogen is sent to the anode of the membrane, and air is sent to the cathode. The hydrogen atoms are stripped of electrons on the anode side, and the positively charged protons pass through the membrane to reach the cathode. In order for this reaction to occur, a platinum catalyst must be used.
- 4. The two proton exchange membrane electrodes in the organic base and the presenter are 35mm*35mm. Experimental steps. Add deionized water to the water level in the PEM water electrolyzer. The amount of water should not be too much to prevent water from flowing into the battery. After adding water, connect the hydrogen gas outlet on the water electrolyzer to the hydrogen gas inlet on the electrical energy with a gas pipe.
- 5.Then connect the 6V-12V DC power supply to the positive and negative wiring of the water electrolyzer part, and connect the transportation line of the electrical part to the electric energy after 2-3 minutes, the small motor starts to work, and the current is displayed on the current and voltmeter. Positive value.
- Route duty cycle: Compare the route’s distance, traffic, terrain, passenger loads, climate and HVAC needs with the bus’s operating requirements; Toyota’s reference range alone does not establish real-world range on a specific route.
- Passenger layout and accessibility: Check the applicable urban or suburban variant, seating arrangement and wheelchair securement availability against service needs.
- Hydrogen supply and downtime: Confirm local station capacity, fueling compatibility and expected refueling turnaround under depot conditions.
- Fleet economics and support: Obtain route-specific operating-cost, maintenance, service-support and procurement information. Toyota’s announcement gives no price, operating-cost comparison or independent efficiency data.
