Toyota’s “baby FJ Cruiser” is no longer just an enthusiast rumor. The production vehicle is officially called the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. Toyota unveiled it globally in October 2025, launched it in Japan on May 14, 2026, and began Philippine retail sales on July 20, 2026.
The catch is the United States. Toyota has not announced a U.S. launch date, MSRP, order banks, or dealer availability for the compact Land Cruiser FJ. So the accurate answer is not that the SUV has been delayed in America—it is that Toyota has not confirmed an American-market program at all.

What happened to Toyota’s baby FJ Cruiser?
The vehicle enthusiasts had been calling the “baby FJ Cruiser,” “baby Land Cruiser,” or compact FJ Cruiser became a real production model when Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ on October 20, 2025.
Toyota said Japan would receive the SUV around the middle of 2026. That plan became reality on May 14, 2026, when Toyota formally launched the Land Cruiser FJ in Japan. Toyota Motor Philippines later confirmed that retail sales would begin there on July 20, 2026.

- Authentically licensed product from Toyota
- Includes an extra set of wheels, tire rack, and screwdriver
- Crafted from durable materials such as 100% die - cast metal and premium rubber tires.
- Our high - end casting method allows for feature rich details, such as an opening hood, doors, detailed interior, and trunk.
- This premium die - cast model is a must have for any Toyota collection
That makes the headline’s “arrive late” wording more complicated than it first appears:
- Globally, the model arrived later than some early automotive reports had predicted. Those reports suggested earlier reveal or production windows, but they were not Toyota commitments.
- In Japan and the Philippines, the SUV is now an officially launched product.
- In the United States, there is still no confirmed launch date, price, ordering information, or dealer-arrival schedule.
In other words, Toyota did build the compact Land Cruiser that fans were waiting for. The unresolved question is where Toyota intends to sell it next.
The official name is Land Cruiser FJ—not FJ Cruiser
The comparison with the old FJ Cruiser is understandable, but the new SUV is not officially a next-generation FJ Cruiser. Toyota places it within the Land Cruiser family as a fourth series alongside the Land Cruiser 300, 70, and 250.
Toyota’s stated concept is “Freedom & Joy.” The idea is to make Land Cruiser capability accessible to more customers in a vehicle that is smaller and easier to handle than the larger members of the family.
The 2007–2014 U.S.-market FJ Cruiser was a separate model. It used retro styling inspired by the FJ40 and was sold in the United States through the 2014 model year. The new Land Cruiser FJ shares some of that visual and emotional territory, but Toyota describes it as part of the broader Land Cruiser lineage rather than announcing it as a direct FJ Cruiser replacement.
The relationship is therefore best described as thematic rather than genealogical. Both vehicles emphasize compact, upright proportions and a recognizable off-road identity. The new Land Cruiser FJ also draws on the square, functional character of earlier Land Cruisers, particularly the approachable spirit of the 40 Series.
For enthusiasts who want a physical reminder of that older model while learning about the lineage, a Toyota FJ Cruiser diecast model is a more accurate collectible recommendation than treating the new SUV as an already-available FJ Cruiser successor.

What the Land Cruiser FJ is mechanically
The production FJ retains the traditional Land Cruiser formula: a body-on-frame SUV with part-time four-wheel drive and an emphasis on durability and off-road use.
| Item | Confirmed Japanese-launch specification |
|---|---|
| Seating | Five passengers |
| Rows | Two |
| Length | Approximately 4,575 mm |
| Width | Approximately 1,855 mm |
| Height | Approximately 1,960 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,580 mm |
| Engine | 2.7-liter 2TR-FE gasoline four-cylinder |
| Power | 120 kW, or 163 PS |
| Torque | 246 N·m |
| Transmission | Six-speed Super ECT automatic |
| Drivetrain | Part-time four-wheel drive |
| Minimum turning radius | 5.5 meters |
Toyota says the vehicle uses an IMV-series platform that has been refined around ground clearance, approach angle, durability, and off-road operation. Its wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250’s, which helps explain the FJ’s more compact footprint and maneuverability.
That shorter wheelbase does not make the FJ a crossover. The body-on-frame construction and part-time four-wheel-drive system place it firmly in the traditional SUV category, even though its exterior dimensions are more approachable than those of the larger Land Cruiser models.
Why the styling looks like a compact FJ Cruiser
Toyota designed the Land Cruiser FJ to be recognizable as an off-road vehicle rather than a generic family crossover. Its upright, squared-off body echoes older Land Cruisers, while several details naturally invite comparison with the discontinued FJ Cruiser.

- Upright and functional body styling
- Round-headlamp design options
- An externally styled spare tire
- Rugged exterior treatment
- A pronounced focus on customization
The resemblance is not accidental, but it should not be overstated. Toyota is using familiar Land Cruiser design language and the spirit of the 40 Series, not simply reviving the old FJ Cruiser under a new badge.
One particularly practical feature is the use of removable, segmented corner bumpers. Toyota says the design is intended to improve repairability and make customization easier. That could be useful for owners who expect to use the vehicle on trails, where a damaged bumper corner should ideally not require replacement of a large, expensive assembly.
Customization is part of the plan
Toyota says the Land Cruiser FJ was developed with customization in mind. The company has shown or described equipment themes including:
- Round-headlamp treatments
- MOLLE-style cargo panels
- Rugged exterior components
- Dealer-installed appearance packages
Exact equipment, packages, and availability vary by market. A feature shown in Toyota’s global design or launch material should not automatically be assumed to be standard on every Japanese, Philippine, or future export-market grade.
Toyota also introduced the Land Hopper electric personal-mobility concept alongside the FJ. It is not standard FJ equipment, and Toyota has not committed to a launch date for it. It should be treated as a separate concept, not as a confirmed accessory or an included part of the Land Cruiser FJ package.
The timeline behind the “late” arrival
December 2021: the Compact Cruiser EV concept
Toyota’s Compact Cruiser EV concept established the expectation that the company was interested in a smaller, retro-influenced off-roader. It helped shape the visual conversation around a future compact Toyota 4×4, but it was a concept—not a production announcement for the Land Cruiser FJ.
2024–2025: reports and speculation
Automotive reports increasingly pointed toward a smaller Land Cruiser or FJ-style SUV. The reports differed over the name, platform, engine, and intended markets. Some suggested earlier reveal or production timing than Toyota ultimately delivered.
Those reports are important to the story because they created the impression that Toyota’s compact off-roader had been delayed. However, they were not official launch promises. The safest conclusion is that the production schedule took longer than the rumor cycle anticipated, not that Toyota broke a publicly announced delivery date.
October 20–21, 2025: official unveiling
Toyota officially unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ and said Japan would receive it around mid-2026. This was the first firm, company-backed timing in the vehicle’s public history.
May 14, 2026: Japanese launch
Toyota formally launched the model in Japan on May 14, 2026. That changed the vehicle from a future product into a purchasable model in its home market.
July 20, 2026: Philippine retail sales
Toyota Motor Philippines announced that retail sales would begin on July 20, 2026. The Philippine announcement confirms that availability expanded beyond Japan, although it does not establish availability in North America, Europe, or any other market.
August 12, 2026: no U.S. confirmation
As of August 12, 2026, Toyota USA’s current communications cover the larger North American Land Cruiser, including 2026 and 2027 model-year materials. The U.S. materials reviewed for this article do not announce the compact Land Cruiser FJ, a U.S. MSRP, order banks, or dealer arrival information.

Toyota has not confirmed that it is.
This is the most important point for American readers. The Japanese launch and Philippine sales announcement prove that the model exists and is being sold in selected markets. They do not prove that Toyota will import it to the United States.
The absence of a U.S. announcement is evidence that the American-market position remains unresolved. It is not proof that Toyota will never sell the FJ in the United States, but there is currently no responsible basis for claiming that a U.S. launch is scheduled.
Several explanations circulate online, including possible certification, emissions, powertrain, production-location, or import-economics issues. Toyota’s official materials reviewed here do not identify a reason for the lack of a U.S. announcement. Those explanations should therefore be treated as speculation rather than reported facts.
American shoppers should also avoid confusing the compact Land Cruiser FJ with the larger Land Cruiser already sold by Toyota USA. They are separate vehicles with different dimensions, positioning, and specifications.

Japanese launch information identifies a purchase price of approximately ¥4.5 million, depending on grade. That figure is market-specific and should not be treated as a U.S. MSRP.
Toyota has also listed a KINTO subscription starting at ¥38,390 per month, including tax. A subscription payment is not the same thing as the vehicle’s purchase price. It may reflect a particular contract structure, term, mileage allowance, insurance arrangement, maintenance package, or other market-specific conditions.

- Toyota Official Licensed
- Openable doors and hood.
- Custom Off-road Wheels with Rubber tires
- Window box, shipped in a corrugated box
- Pre-assembled, not a building kit, not RC
Because Toyota has not announced U.S. availability, there is no official American price to convert or estimate. Applying a simple exchange rate to the Japanese purchase price would ignore shipping, federal and state compliance, equipment differences, taxes, duties, distribution costs, and dealer pricing.

The Land Cruiser FJ’s confirmed Japanese specification is a 2.7-liter gasoline engine with a six-speed automatic and part-time four-wheel drive. Rumors about hybrid, diesel, or other powertrains for North America or Europe should not be presented as confirmed versions of this model.

Likewise, accessories shown in Toyota’s global material may not be available in every country. Owners of the older 2007–2014 FJ Cruiser should be especially careful when shopping for cargo organizers, MOLLE panels, or other equipment: products designed for the old FJ Cruiser should not be assumed to fit the 2026 Land Cruiser FJ.
That compatibility distinction matters because the two vehicles are separate models, even though their styling and intended audience overlap.
What this means for buyers
If you live in Japan
The Land Cruiser FJ is an officially launched vehicle, with market-specific grades, pricing, and subscription information available through Toyota’s Japanese sales channels. Confirm the exact equipment and delivery terms for the grade you want.
If you live in the Philippines
Toyota Motor Philippines has confirmed retail sales beginning July 20, 2026. Local pricing, grades, equipment, and delivery timing should be checked with Toyota’s Philippine organization or an authorized dealer.

Do not place a deposit or rely on a dealer rumor as evidence of a national launch. Toyota has not released a U.S. MSRP, order process, or official arrival date for the compact Land Cruiser FJ. The sensible approach is to monitor Toyota USA announcements and ask dealers to distinguish an official allocation from an informal expression of interest.
If you already own an older FJ Cruiser
The new Land Cruiser FJ is relevant to your vehicle’s design heritage, but it is not a direct parts or accessory replacement. Check model year, body style, mounting points, and manufacturer fitment before buying any cargo or recovery equipment.
The answer in one sentence
Toyota finally built the compact, retro-influenced off-roader enthusiasts wanted, but it arrived later than some early reports predicted and still has no confirmed U.S. launch date.
