The Toyota Tacoma H2-Overlander is a Toyota-built SEMA 2025 concept, not a production Tacoma announced for sale. It pairs a second-generation Mirai fuel-cell stack with a battery and two electric drive units; Toyota reports 547 horsepower. Its standout overlanding features include a 15-kW power takeoff and a system that recovers fuel-cell water for washing and showering—not drinking.
What is the Toyota Tacoma H2-Overlander?
Toyota’s TRD engineering teams in California and North Carolina developed and built the truck with support from Toyota Motor North America R&D for the 2025 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. Toyota presents it as a showcase for hydrogen fuel cells and their possible applications. SEMA’s 2025 show coverage also lists it among Toyota’s displayed concepts.
Toyota’s Nov. 3, 2025 announcement does not announce a production version or a consumer sales plan. The H2-Overlander’s disclosed hardware and output therefore describe this one concept, not equipment or specifications available on a retail Tacoma. TRD Emerging Technologies Group manager Craig Cauthen said, “This vehicle showcases the ability of the TRD team that goes beyond just what we can do on the racetrack.”
How the hydrogen-electric powertrain works
The fuel-cell stack combines hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity and water. In Toyota’s concept, electricity from a second-generation Toyota Mirai fuel-cell stack works with a 24.9-kWh lithium-ion battery to supply two electric drive units. Toyota describes the pairing as combining electric-motor response and regenerative capability with hydrogen refueling. Its hydrogen solutions page explains the fuel-cell process generally.

What makes it an overlanding concept?
Off-grid electrical power
Toyota says the truck has a 15-kW power takeoff with dual NEMA 14-50 outlets. The company says it can power a substantial off-grid load or charge two EVs at once. The announcement does not specify runtime, test conditions, or an independent demonstration, so those capabilities should be understood as Toyota’s stated aims rather than verified field performance.
Recovered water from the fuel cell
A patent-pending exhaust water recovery system captures and filters water produced by the fuel-cell stack. Toyota says the resulting water is essentially distilled, contains no minerals, and is suitable for washing and showering. Toyota explicitly says it is not recommended for drinking. The announcement does not provide a measured water output.

Chassis, suspension and cooling changes
The H2-Overlander uses a front limited-slip differential and a rear electronic locking differential. Toyota also lists a TRD billet long-travel kit and FOX 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks adapted from Tundra suspension development, plus a Tundra front brake upgrade.
Its custom wheels measure 17×8.5 inches and are fitted with 35×12.5R17 off-road tires. Toyota does not name a tire make or model. A custom cooling system draws on components from the Tacoma TRD Pro and Lexus RZ.

These details describe the engineered show vehicle. Toyota has not established that its suspension, brakes, cooling system, wheels or tires are retail Tacoma parts, a bolt-on package, or confirmed production-Tacoma fitments.
How it differs from a production Tacoma
Toyota’s May 18, 2023 announcement for the 2024 production Tacoma describes a separate powertrain lineup: a standard 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE engine and an available i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Toyota states that the i-FORCE MAX produces 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Those figures do not describe the H2-Overlander.

| Onboard storage | Three hydrogen tanks with 6 kg total capacity; 24.9-kWh battery | Hydrogen storage and battery capacity: not stated in Toyota’s May 18, 2023 announcement |
| Electric output | 225-kW front motor and 188-kW eAxle; Toyota reports 547 hp combined | For the i-FORCE MAX, Toyota reports 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque; the cited announcement does not state electric-motor output separately |
| Energy infrastructure | Hydrogen refueling; Toyota also describes a 15-kW power takeoff | Hydrogen refueling is not part of the powertrains described in Toyota’s cited production announcement |
This is context, not a head-to-head test: the H2-Overlander is a concept with no published independent range or consumption result. Toyota has not announced its fuel-cell propulsion, hydrogen tanks, 547-hp output or water-recovery system for a production Tacoma.
What Toyota has—and has not—demonstrated
The announcement gives a detailed parts and powertrain description, but it does not establish a real-world driving range, refueling time, off-grid runtime, water production rate, or lifecycle emissions result for this truck. Nor does it report independent road or performance testing. Those omissions matter when interpreting the concept: its specifications show what Toyota engineered for SEMA, not how a production vehicle would perform in everyday use.
