Toyota’s U.S. recall covers certain 2021–2024 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles whose second-row seatback recliner may not fully lock after adjustment. NHTSA campaign 26V128 lists 550,007 potential vehicles affected; Toyota initially described the total as approximately 550,000. The repair is a free dealer replacement of return springs, but a model-year match alone does not confirm that a particular SUV is included.
Is your 2021–2024 Highlander affected?
Possibly, but only a vehicle-specific lookup can confirm whether the recall applies to your SUV. NHTSA lists 550,007 potential vehicles affected in its March 10, 2026 campaign acknowledgment. Toyota’s March 5 announcement rounded the figure to approximately 550,000. The 500,000 figure in the headline is a broad rounded description, not the official campaign count.
The U.S. campaign covers certain 2021–2024 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles, not every vehicle from those model years. NHTSA identifies the affected component as the mid/rear seat assembly recliner. The campaign is NHTSA 26V128; Toyota campaign identifiers are 26TB06 and 26TA06.
How to check the recall by VIN
- Find your vehicle identification number (VIN), typically visible through the windshield or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.
- Enter it in Toyota’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s vehicle recall lookup. NHTSA also offers a license-plate search.
- If the lookup shows this campaign, contact a Toyota dealer to arrange the recall repair. Toyota lists its Brand Engagement Center at 1-800-331-4331 for questions.
A recent recall may not immediately appear for every eligible VIN: NHTSA says VINs are added continuously. If your Highlander appears to fit the model-year range but the lookup shows no campaign, check again or contact Toyota or a dealer for current vehicle-specific status. A recall lookup result is more useful than relying on the model year alone.

What is the defect and why does it matter?
The second-row seatback recliner assembly may not fully lock after the seatback is adjusted. If a seatback is not locked, it may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The concern is the seatback locking and restraint function—not a general issue with every Highlander seat or a stated failure rate.
What is the repair?
NHTSA’s campaign record says Toyota dealers will replace the return springs in the recliner assemblies free of charge. Toyota described the replacement springs as improved ones in its announcement. This is a dealer recall repair; an aftermarket part or owner-installed accessory is not the listed remedy.

What should owners know about timing?
Toyota’s March 5, 2026 announcement said it was preparing the remedy and expected to notify owners by early May. The NHTSA campaign record, dated March 10, projected notification letters for April 20. Those were different estimates recorded at different points; neither date establishes that every owner received a letter then. Use the VIN lookup or ask a Toyota dealer for the current status of your vehicle.

Advice depends on the country. Transport Canada’s September 2026 notice covers certain Canadian 2021–2025 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles and advises not using the second-row seats to transport passengers until the repair is completed. That is guidance in the Canadian notice; it should not be presented as a U.S. instruction. The U.S. recall sources describe the crash-related injury risk and repair but do not provide that same interim passenger-use direction in the material cited here. U.S. owners should check their VIN and contact Toyota or a dealer for vehicle-specific guidance.
