In Toyota’s 2024 specifications, the maximum is 3,500 pounds, but only for the gas-powered Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims. Other 2024 versions are rated between 1,500 and 2,500 pounds. Check the specific vehicle’s certification label and owner’s manual before towing; the model name alone does not establish its rating.
2024 Toyota RAV4 towing capacity by trim
Toyota’s 2024 brochure lists the following trailer ratings. These are model-year-specific figures, not a guarantee that a vehicle with the same trim name from another year has the same capacity.
| 2024 RAV4 version | Published towing capacity |
|---|---|
| LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Limited (gas) | 1,500 lb |
| Adventure and TRD Off-Road (gas) | 3,500 lb |
| Listed Hybrid trims | 1,750 lb |
| Prime SE and Prime XSE (plug-in hybrid) | 2,500 lb |
These trim figures are from Toyota’s 2024 RAV4 brochure. The brochure also provides GVWR and payload figures, which affect how much trailer weight the vehicle can carry safely once people and cargo are aboard.
Does a RAV4 tow 3,500 pounds without the tow package?
No. Toyota’s 2024 owner’s manual specifies a 1,500-pound trailer-weight rating without the towing package and 3,500 pounds with it. The higher limit is not universal: Toyota’s brochure assigns that capacity to the 2024 gas Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims. Verify the vehicle’s certification label, installed equipment and manual rather than assuming a hitch or trim badge means the higher rating applies. See the 2024 RAV4 owner’s manual.

How much can a RAV4 Hybrid tow?
Toyota lists 1,750 pounds for the 2024 RAV4 Hybrid trims covered by its brochure. For the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota’s manual gives a 1,750-pound gross trailer limit, a 6,670-pound gross combination weight rating (GCWR) and a 1,000-pound unbraked trailer rating. The unbraked figure is the limit for a trailer without service brakes; if the trailer’s gross weight exceeds it, trailer service brakes are required.
The 2025 manual also explains that passengers, cargo and optional equipment reduce allowable trailer weight. The trailer rating is only one limit: the combined vehicle and trailer must stay within GCWR, and the vehicle must remain within its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and gross axle weight ratings (GAWR). Toyota’s detailed figures and instructions are in the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid Owner’s Manual.

Can a RAV4 tow a camper or trailer?
It can tow a trailer only when its loaded weight and hitch load fit the exact RAV4’s ratings. Compare the trailer’s actual gross weight when loaded—not just its advertised dry weight—with the vehicle’s trailer-weight limit. Include people, luggage and other cargo in the vehicle, and account for tongue weight as part of the load. A small camper may fit one RAV4 configuration and exceed another’s limits.
Check the trailer and vehicle together
- Confirm the RAV4’s model year, trim, powertrain, drive configuration and towing equipment, then use the rating on its certification label and in its manual.
- Check the trailer’s loaded gross weight and tongue weight. Toyota recommends tongue weight of 9% to 11% of gross trailer weight.
- Account for occupants, cargo and optional equipment. Staying below the trailer rating does not by itself ensure that GCWR, GVWR or either GAWR is respected.
- Use a hitch and bracket suitable for the vehicle, and a hitch conforming to its gross-trailer-weight requirement. Match trailer-ball height to the coupler; Toyota specifies receiver and ball positions in the manual.
- Follow the unbraked trailer limit. If gross trailer weight exceeds that limit, the trailer needs service brakes.
Model year matters: don’t carry the 3,500-pound figure forward
Toyota’s newsroom announcement says the gas-powered Adventure and TRD Off-Road grades will not be offered for model year 2025. That means the 2024 maximum is not a safe assumption for a 2025 RAV4. Check the available trim, equipment, label and manual for the particular model year and vehicle. Toyota’s announcement is available in its 2025 RAV4 newsroom release.

Safe towing limits and driving
Toyota warns that towing affects handling, braking, durability and fuel consumption. Do not exceed the vehicle’s trailer-weight rating (TWR), unbraked TWR, GCWR, GVWR or GAWR. Toyota recommends that vehicle-and-trailer speed not exceed 65 mph (104 km/h), the posted limit or the trailer’s own limit—whichever is lowest. The 2025 Hybrid manual states: “To tow a trailer safely, use extreme care and drive the vehicle in accordance with the trailer’s characteristics and operating conditions.”
