Toyota was the world’s top-selling automaker in 2024 by global manufacturer-group volume. The Toyota Motor Corporation group reported 10.8 million vehicles, ahead of Volkswagen Group’s 9.0 million. That 10.8 million total includes Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino; Toyota and Lexus parent-only sales were 10.2 million.
What “top-selling car brand” means in this ranking
The headline is often phrased as a brand contest, but the most comparable global figures are manufacturer-group totals. Toyota Motor Corporation’s January 30, 2025 release counts Toyota and its subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors for January–December 2024. Reuters reported that group total as 10.8 million vehicles.

For a badge-level comparison, Reuters reported 10.2 million Toyota/Lexus parent-only sales. Volkswagen has the same scope distinction: Volkswagen Group delivered 9.0 million vehicles, while the Volkswagen passenger-vehicle brand sold around 4.8 million.

Toyota therefore remained ahead by roughly 1.8 million group vehicles. Reuters described 2024 as Toyota’s fifth consecutive year in the global top position, even as its group volume fell 3.7% from 2023. Volkswagen Group also declined, reporting a 3.5% year-over-year decrease.

Why Toyota stayed number one
A broad multi-brand portfolio
Toyota’s group result combines several businesses serving different markets and vehicle categories. Daihatsu is a major small-car specialist, while Hino supplies commercial vehicles. Including those subsidiaries makes the group total materially larger than Toyota-badge sales alone.
A powertrain mix led by hybrids
Among Toyota and Lexus parent-only sales, hybrids accounted for 40.8% in 2024, while battery-electric vehicles accounted for 1.4%, according to Reuters. That mix gave Toyota substantial volume in markets where buyers wanted lower fuel consumption without switching fully to a battery-electric vehicle.

The percentages apply to Toyota/Lexus parent-only sales, not the entire 10.8-million-vehicle group total. They also describe sales mix, not a claim that hybrids outsold every other powertrain in every country.

These figures show why “Toyota sold more than Volkswagen” needs a scope qualifier. Toyota/Lexus parent-only sales exceeded the Volkswagen brand’s roughly 4.8 million, but the cleanest manufacturer-to-manufacturer comparison is Toyota Motor Corporation group versus Volkswagen Group.

Europe tells a different story
Global leadership does not guarantee first place in every market. JATO Dynamics’ full-year 2024 Europe-28 registration table ranked the Volkswagen brand first and Toyota second:

These are registrations in the Europe-28 market, not worldwide deliveries, and they compare individual brands rather than the two corporate groups. The geography and measurement therefore differ from the global manufacturer totals.

What the 2024 ranking does—and does not—prove
- It proves global scale: Toyota’s group delivered more vehicles worldwide than Volkswagen Group in 2024.
- It does not mean Toyota won every market: Volkswagen led Toyota in Europe-28 registrations.
- It is not a Toyota-badge-only figure: the 10.8 million total includes Daihatsu and Hino.
- It is not an electric-vehicle ranking: Toyota’s parent-only mix was 40.8% hybrid and 1.4% battery-electric.
- It is not a measure of profitability or quality: unit volume alone does not establish margins, reliability, customer satisfaction or vehicle profitability.
Bottom line
Toyota was still number one in 2024 when manufacturers are compared on global group volume: 10.8 million vehicles for Toyota Motor Corporation, including Daihatsu and Hino, versus 9.0 million for Volkswagen Group. On a narrower Toyota/Lexus parent-only basis, the figure was 10.2 million. Volkswagen nevertheless led Toyota in Europe-28 registrations, illustrating why any sales ranking must state its scope, geography and measurement.
