Co-developed with Isuzu, it combines Isuzu’s full-flat battery-electric bus platform with Toyota’s fuel-cell system. Toyota cites a range of more than 300 km and refueling in about 10 minutes, though both figures depend on operating and station conditions.
What the new Toyota Sora is
The Sora is a hydrogen fuel-cell route bus, not a passenger car. The launch continues the Sora nameplate introduced in 2018, but this generation uses a new platform and has substantially revised specifications. Toyota describes it as a next-generation route bus developed jointly with Isuzu. Toyota’s October 5, 2026 launch announcement says the bus is intended to support zero-emission route-bus operations.
The collaboration was announced in September 2025. The partners said production was planned to begin during fiscal 2026, which runs from April 2026 to March 2027, at J-Bus’s Utsunomiya Plant. That was an announced plan; the launch materials do not independently confirm a production-start date. The joint-development announcement also described standardizing parts shared with battery-electric vehicles as a way to reduce costs.
Range, hydrogen capacity and refueling time
Toyota says the new Sora can travel more than 300 km, roughly 100 km farther than the first-generation Sora, while using about 20% less total hydrogen-tank capacity. These are Toyota reference values, not independent fleet-test results. The company says actual range varies with temperature, traffic, passenger count, air-conditioning use and other conditions. An operator would need to assess performance on its own routes and duty cycles.

Toyota gives a refueling time of about 10 minutes, subject to hydrogen-station capacity and ambient temperature. The bus is also compatible with a newer high-speed filling standard. Toyota says refueling could take roughly half as long at compatible stations, but that is a future possibility dependent on infrastructure deployment, not the stated typical time today.
The urban-model specification lists three 70 MPa hydrogen tanks with a combined volume of 471 liters, alongside a lithium-ion propulsion battery. Toyota also says an external power supply unit can enable the bus to provide emergency power during disasters; it does not describe that unit as standard consumer equipment.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
Capacity, layout and accessibility
Toyota lists the urban model at 10,545 × 2,485 × 3,440 mm and a total capacity of 70 people: 19 seated passengers, 50 standing passengers and one crew member. The passenger area has a step-free full-flat floor intended to make movement easier for passengers, including wheelchair users and people with strollers.
Toyota says the Sora is offered in four variants—two urban and two suburban—with different seating layouts. A one-touch wheelchair securement system is optional, with orders expected to open around April 2027.

Powertrain and safety equipment
For the urban model, Toyota lists a fuel-cell stack with maximum output of 113 kW and two motors with combined output of 220 kW and maximum torque of 970 N·m. The roof-mounted hydrogen tanks and fuel-cell system are integrated while retaining the flat-floor layout. Isuzu’s 2025 preview described Isuzu as responsible for planning, developing and designing the body, with Toyota developing the fuel-cell system. Isuzu’s ERGA FCV preview outlined that division of work.
- Emergency Driver Stop System: Linked to a Driver Status Monitor, it is designed to slow and stop the bus, apply the parking brake and keep the vehicle secure on slopes if a driver problem is detected.
- Front blind-spot monitor: Detects pedestrians and bicycles ahead and alerts the driver.
These are listed equipment and intended safety functions; the launch information does not establish measured crash-reduction outcomes.

How the Toyota–Isuzu partnership works
Isuzu planned, developed and designed the full-flat route-bus platform, while Toyota developed the fuel-cell system. J-Bus, an equal joint venture of Isuzu and Hino, was named as the manufacturer in the partners’ development announcement. The arrangement builds a fuel-cell bus on a platform associated with battery-electric route buses, while incorporating Toyota’s fuel-cell technology.
Isuzu markets its corresponding fuel-cell route bus as the ERGA FCV. Its October 2026 announcement gives representative figures that closely match the Sora: dimensions of 10,545 × 2,485 × 3,440 mm, 113 kW fuel-cell output, 220 kW motor output, three 157-liter tanks, about 10 minutes to refuel and more than 300 km of range. Isuzu also lists an 88 kWh battery and says range varies with temperature, passenger load and speed. These are Isuzu’s representative specifications and do not establish that every market or trim has identical equipment. Isuzu’s October 5, 2026 ERGA FCV announcement is the source for those figures.

What fleet operators should weigh
The Sora gives transit agencies another route-bus pathway alongside battery-electric buses. The relevant choice depends on the operator’s routes and infrastructure, rather than a single range figure or refueling claim.
- Energy infrastructure: Compare access to suitable hydrogen refueling with depot charging capacity and grid connections for battery-electric buses.
- Duty cycle: Evaluate the time and scheduling needed to replenish energy against daily mileage, layovers and service patterns.
- Route-specific performance: Assess range under the operator’s real passenger loads, traffic, weather and air-conditioning demands.
- Economics: Compare purchase and operating costs using local vehicle, fuel, electricity, maintenance and infrastructure data. The launch announcements provide no quantified cost comparison.
Toyota’s zero-emission framing concerns operation of the bus; the announcements do not establish lifecycle emissions for the hydrogen supply chain or provide a quantified lifecycle comparison with battery-electric buses.
Price, deliveries and deployment status
The launch materials do not state a fleet or retail price, a customer delivery schedule, order totals or named operators already running the new Sora. Toyota reports that it had supplied more than 3,500 fuel-cell systems to over 100 customers worldwide as of the end of September 2026; that is a company-reported figure for fuel-cell systems, not Sora buses sold or deployed.
