Toyota has formally placed Century above Lexus, turning its historic Japanese chauffeur-car nameplate into a standalone ultra-luxury marque. The move was announced at the Japan Mobility Show on October 29, 2025, as part of a new five-brand structure: Century, Lexus, GR, Toyota, and Daihatsu.
This is more significant than adding a new trim level or replacing a Lexus flagship. Toyota is creating a separate place in its portfolio for exceptional exclusivity, craftsmanship, rear-seat comfort, and Japanese cultural identity. Lexus, meanwhile, is being given more room to explore new luxury products, services, designs, and mobility experiences.
There is an important qualification: Toyota has announced Century’s strategic position, not a complete worldwide retail rollout. The available official material does not establish a U.S. launch date, American pricing, a U.S. dealer network, or a market-by-market sales plan.

Toyota’s new brand hierarchy
| Brand | Role in Toyota’s structure |
|---|---|
| Century | Ultra-luxury, exclusivity, craftsmanship, Japanese prestige, and top-tier chauffeur-focused vehicles |
| Lexus | Global luxury brand with greater freedom to experiment with products, services, design, and mobility |
| GR | Performance and motorsport |
| Toyota | Mass-market mobility and mainstream vehicles |
| Daihatsu | Compact urban and community mobility |
Toyota describes Century as positioned “above Lexus.” That wording explains the change more precisely than calling Century a new Toyota division or an independent luxury-car company. Toyota has established a standalone brand identity; the available announcement does not say that Century is a separate legal corporation.
Why Century needed its own brand
For years, the Century occupied an unusual position. It was a Toyota, but it was not intended to function like an ordinary Toyota. In Japan, the sedan became associated with senior business leaders, politicians, ceremonial duties, and customers who wanted a discreet chauffeur vehicle rather than a conspicuous status symbol.
That created a portfolio problem. Toyota’s mainstream brand could sell the car, but could not easily communicate the degree of scarcity and personal service associated with it. Lexus, on the other hand, already represented Toyota’s global luxury ambitions but also needed room to appeal to a wider range of luxury customers.
The new structure separates those jobs:
- Century can focus on one-of-one character, handcrafted details, quietness, rear-seat comfort, tradition, and controlled exclusivity.
- Lexus can pursue a broader definition of luxury, including electrification, unusual body styles, technology, design, services, and mobility experiences.
- Toyota can remain the high-volume mobility brand without asking its flagship to carry the entire company’s prestige strategy.
In Toyota’s presentation, Century’s identity was summarized through the ideas of “One of One” and Japanese pride. The point is not simply to make a more expensive vehicle. Toyota wants Century to represent a distinctive Japanese interpretation of ultra-luxury.

Lexus is not being demoted out of the luxury market. Instead, Toyota is drawing a sharper line between conventional global luxury and the ultra-luxury tier above it.
At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Lexus said its future role would center on “DISCOVER.” Lexus branding chief Simon Humphries presented Century’s elevation as a source of freedom: with Century occupying the most exclusive position, Lexus can explore new products, services, and experiences without also having to serve as Toyota’s ultimate chauffeur marque.
Lexus used the show to illustrate that broader direction. Its concepts included:

- Note: Please check the size of your souvenir before purchasing
- 【Easy setup】Say goodbye to complicated assembly! Simply place your collection on the base and cover with the acrylic case. This way, your collection can be displayed at the perfect angle for a stunning visual effect.
- 【Size】With interior dimensions of 13 x 6.1 x 4.6 inches, it can accommodate most car models. Providing a sense of authenticity and boldness in any setting, this display case embodies the spirit of automotive culture and provides a premium platform for fans and collectors to appreciate the exquisite details and superior quality of each model car.
- 【Dust-proof】This premium acrylic case is made of high-quality acrylic material, clearly showing the appearance and details of your collection in 360 degrees. It also prevents damage and scratches, and keeps dust out, keeping your collection shining.
- LS Concept: a six-wheel “Luxury Space” vehicle that reimagined the flagship as a high-end mobility environment rather than a conventional sedan.
- LS Coupe Concept: a more traditional but highly emotional luxury-car interpretation.
- Lexus Sport Concept: a performance-oriented expression of the brand’s future.
These concepts are not evidence that every proposed vehicle will reach production. They do show the division of labor Toyota is pursuing: Century concentrates on the highest level of exclusivity, while Lexus is encouraged to test different forms of luxury and mobility.

The Century name is not a recently invented badge. Toyota introduced the first Century in 1967 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sakichi Toyoda’s birth. From the beginning, the model was conceived as a flagship built around craftsmanship, quietness, comfort, and Japanese design values.
That history matters because ultra-luxury brands rely on more than equipment and price. They need a story that customers can understand and that the manufacturer can sustain over generations. Century’s long association with Japan’s political, business, and ceremonial elite gives Toyota a foundation that would be difficult to create from scratch.
The Century sedan
The current-generation sedan arrived in Japan on June 22, 2018. Toyota’s launch material described a rear-seat-focused flagship powered by a 5.0-liter V8 hybrid system. The car was planned for nationwide Japanese sales, with a stated target of approximately 50 units per month.
That limited-volume approach is central to the Century formula. The sedan is not designed to chase the sales numbers of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or a Lexus LS. Its appeal comes partly from being uncommon and from the sense that it was built for a particular type of owner and use.

The Century SUV
On September 6, 2023, Toyota expanded the nameplate with the Century SUV. It uses a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in-hybrid system and combines a modern SUV body with the model’s traditional emphasis on rear-seat comfort and chauffeur-oriented travel.
The SUV was a major strategic step. It showed that Toyota did not regard Century as permanently tied to one formal sedan body style. It also gave the nameplate a format suited to contemporary luxury buyers who want a higher seating position, flexible access, and a more commanding road presence.

Toyota said the SUV would be sold through selected Toyota dealerships with dedicated Century expertise. That approach is consistent with the brand’s intended scarcity, although it should not be interpreted as proof of a comparable dealership system in every overseas market.
What Toyota showed in 2025
The Japan Mobility Show was used to establish Century’s future direction as much as to announce its new status. Official Century imagery and exhibit material referenced ideas including Century GRMN and Century Tailor Made.

Those references suggest that Toyota is considering two seemingly different ways to expand Century:
- Performance and driver involvement: a GRMN interpretation could give the traditionally chauffeur-oriented brand a more dynamic, enthusiast-focused expression.
- Individualization: Tailor Made points toward highly personalized vehicles, where color, trim, materials, and specification help make each example more distinctive.
However, Toyota’s official materials establish design and branding intent—not a complete list of production commitments. A Century concept, coupe, grand tourer, GRMN model, or bespoke program should not be described as confirmed for sale unless Toyota issues a separate production announcement.
Independent automotive coverage has interpreted the show car and related imagery as a coupe or grand-tourer-style attempt to communicate Century’s ability to operate in the global ultra-luxury space. That is a reasonable reading of the strategy, but Toyota’s own announcement remains the authority for what has actually been established.
Is Century competing with Bentley and Rolls-Royce?
Strategically, Century is moving toward the territory occupied by Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Maybach. That comparison is useful because it explains what “above Lexus” means in practical market terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Century’s potential advantage | The challenge Toyota must solve |
|---|---|
| Decades of prestige in Japan | Building comparable recognition outside Japan |
| A strong association with chauffeur use and rear-seat comfort | Creating consistent ultra-luxury service in overseas markets |
| Toyota’s engineering, hybrid, and manufacturing resources | Delivering the scarcity and hand-finished character expected at the top of the market |
| A distinctive Japanese cultural identity | Turning that identity into a globally understood brand mythology |
| A clearer position above Lexus | Providing controlled personalization, ownership access, and after-sales support |
Brand architecture alone cannot create an ultra-luxury marque. Century will need carefully managed availability, specialized sales and service, personalization, and a customer experience that feels different from buying a high-end Toyota or Lexus.
Will the Toyota Century come to the United States?
There is no confirmed U.S. launch date, U.S. price, homologation announcement, or American dealer plan in the official material reviewed.
The Toyota USA 2026 model-year lineup page does not list Century. That supports the cautious conclusion that Century was not part of Toyota’s publicly listed U.S. range at the time of the research. It does not prove that the brand will never come to America, nor does it rule out a later announcement.
Earlier international reports indicated that Century vehicles had appeared in selected overseas markets, including China, and that Lexus facilities could be used for international sales in some locations. Those reports predate the formal October 2025 brand launch and should not be treated as a definitive global sales plan for 2026.
For American buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: the brand announcement does not yet make a Century sedan or SUV orderable through Toyota dealers in the United States. Any claim that Century is definitely coming to America needs a newer, market-specific Toyota announcement.

What the launch really means
Toyota’s Century announcement is best understood as a portfolio reset. Toyota is separating its most exclusive expression of Japanese luxury from Lexus, while giving Lexus permission to become more experimental and broadly defined.
The existing Century sedan and SUV provide a real product foundation, and the name’s history gives the brand unusual credibility. But the difficult work comes next. Toyota must decide how widely Century will be sold, how much production will be constrained, how personalization will work, and whether its Japanese prestige can translate into a globally compelling ultra-luxury ownership experience.
