The Toyota Corolla turned 50 in 2016, when Toyota reported more than 44.1 million sales worldwide since its 1966 launch. That is a historical total, not the current figure: Toyota’s later fact sheet puts cumulative Corolla series sales at 55 million as of December 2024.

How many Corollas had Toyota sold by its 50th anniversary?

Toyota Motor Corporation said that more than 44.1 million Corollas had been sold globally since the first generation launched in 1966. Its detailed sales table records 44.11 million cumulative sales through September 2016, the cutoff behind the anniversary milestone. Toyota defines the count broadly: it includes all vehicles named “Corolla,” rather than only one body style, generation or market variant. Toyota’s 2016 Corolla sales summary and detailed sales table provide those figures.

The 44.11 million total belongs to 2016. Toyota’s later Corolla Series fact sheet reports 55 million cumulative sales as of December 2024. The two figures have different reporting cutoffs, so they should not be treated as competing totals for the same date.

When did the Corolla turn 50?

Toyota introduced the first Corolla in Japan in 1966, making 2016 its 50th anniversary. The company’s sales history shows how quickly the nameplate accumulated volume: it reached 1 million cumulative sales in 1970 and 40 million in 2013. Toyota North America also marked the anniversary with a limited 50th Anniversary Special Edition Corolla in 2016; that was a past campaign, not evidence of a currently available edition. Toyota North America’s anniversary announcement describes the release.

Was the Corolla the world’s best-selling car?

Toyota Motor Europe said in its 2016 anniversary release that the Corolla became the world’s best-selling model in 1997, when cumulative global sales exceeded 22.65 million. This is Toyota’s attributed historical milestone; it does not mean that the Corolla held the top spot in every market or every year. Toyota Motor Europe’s 2016 account also said the Corolla was sold in more than 150 countries at that time.

How did the Corolla become a global nameplate?

The first car was introduced in Japan in 1966, and exports to North America began in 1968, according to Toyota Motor Europe. The model’s reach grew across markets, but availability was not universal or constant: Toyota UK says the Corolla was no longer part of its country’s model range after 2008, even as it remained in Toyota’s global lineup. That distinction matters when reading worldwide sales totals: the nameplate’s long global run includes changing local lineups and versions. Toyota UK’s anniversary history records its local-market timeline.
