Toyota has confirmed that Gazoo Racing is developing a new mid-engine sports car. That moves the project beyond rumor, but it is not yet a production-car unveiling. Toyota has not confirmed the MR2 name, a final design, drivetrain, output, price, or a firm release date.

Toyota has confirmed that Gazoo Racing is developing a new mid-engine sports car. That moves the project beyond rumor, but it is not yet a production-car unveiling. Toyota has not confirmed the MR2 name, a final design, drivetrain, output, price, or a firm release date.

The most accurate description is a confirmed Toyota mid-engine sports-car project that could become the spiritual successor to the MR2. Development is reportedly only in its first of four stages, with the complete process generally taking about four to five years. A car arriving around 2030 is therefore a reasonable reported target or inference—not a Toyota-announced launch date.

What Toyota actually confirmed

Gazoo Racing president Tomoya Takahashi told Automotive News that Toyota had decided to install its new 2.0-liter engine in a midship vehicle. The statement confirms the direction of the project, but it does not amount to a full reveal or specification announcement.

The project is linked to Toyota’s G20E engine program. Toyota has already shown the compact 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the mid-engine TGRR GR Yaris M Concept, giving the new sports car project a running technical demonstrator rather than leaving it at the sketch or proposal stage.

There is an important distinction between those two things:

  • Confirmed: Toyota is developing a mid-engine sports car through Gazoo Racing.
  • Supported by a prototype: Toyota has demonstrated a mid-engine package using a compact 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.
  • Not confirmed: the production model’s name, body, engine output, drivetrain, weight, transmission, markets, price, or exact timing.

The G20E engine gives the project credibility

The clearest technical clue is Toyota’s G20E. The engine was first shown at Toyota’s May 2024 Multipathway Workshop and was later used in the mid-engine GR Yaris M Concept. Toyota’s stated challenge has been to make the 2.0-liter engine compact while balancing performance, packaging, and reliability.

Toyota Gazoo Racing describes the GR Yaris M Concept as using a mid-mounted 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and a reworked GR-FOUR powertrain concept. That makes the car an important development vehicle: Toyota has demonstrated that the engine and its supporting hardware can be arranged behind the occupants in a compact performance car.

It should not, however, be treated as a production specification sheet. A development or competition-oriented prototype can use different calibration, cooling, exhaust, transmission, electronics, structural components, and durability targets from a road car. The prototype does not establish the final Toyota sports car’s horsepower, emissions certification, transmission, reliability specifications, or retail configuration.

Is this the new Toyota MR2?

Possibly—but Toyota has not said so publicly. “MR2 successor” is a useful way to explain why this announcement matters, not a confirmed model name.

Toyota introduced the first-generation MR2 in 1984. It was a midship two-seater and is widely recognized in Toyota’s historical material as Japan’s first mass-produced mid-engine sports car. The formula was straightforward and distinctive: put the engine behind the cabin, keep the car relatively compact, and focus on balance and driver involvement.

That history makes any new Toyota mid-engine sports car an obvious spiritual successor, even if it eventually receives a different badge. Until Toyota confirms the name, the careful wording is “likely MR2 successor,” “spiritual successor to the MR2,” or “Toyota’s next mid-engine sports car”—not “the new MR2” as though the badge and production car had already been unveiled.

For the full story of Toyota’s original mid-engine sports car, a Toyota MR2 history book covering all three generations is useful context. It explains the lineage from the 1984 original through the end of MR2 production in 2007, but it is not documentation for the unreleased vehicle.

Where the FT-Se concept fits

Toyota’s FT-Se concept is part of the reason speculation about a new MR2 became so persistent. Shown in 2023, the FT-Se is a two-seat GR sports-car concept with proportions that naturally suggested a mid-engine successor to Toyota’s classic roadster.

It is still too early to call the FT-Se the production car. The available confirmation does not establish that the new sports car will use the FT-Se name, retain its exterior design, or use the concept’s battery-electric architecture. The concept is best described as a possible design and product-strategy precursor—not proof of the final vehicle.

This distinction matters because concept cars often preview a brand’s design language or performance ambitions without committing the company to a particular production platform. Toyota’s confirmed mid-engine project may share ideas with the FT-Se, but Toyota has not publicly connected the two as the same production program.

The Tokyo Auto Salon reveal was not the sports car

Some of the confusion came from Toyota’s 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon messaging, which raised expectations for a midship two-seater. Toyota Times later clarified that the “midship two-seater” displayed at the event was a customized Daihatsu Hijet truck.

That truck was not the public unveiling of Toyota’s new production sports car. The more significant news came afterward through Takahashi’s interview-based confirmation that a separate mid-engine sports-car project is under development.

In other words, the auto show created a strong hint and plenty of speculation, but it did not reveal an orderable MR2 successor or a finished road-car prototype.

What kind of car could Toyota build?

The available evidence supports a compact, performance-focused vehicle built around the G20E and a mid-engine layout. Beyond that, the details remain open.

Reports have discussed possibilities including all-wheel drive, hybrid assistance, and output above 400 horsepower. Those ideas may reflect development targets or speculation around Toyota’s broader performance strategy, but they are not established final production specifications in the official material currently available.

The GR Yaris M Concept’s reworked GR-FOUR concept makes all-wheel drive technically relevant to the discussion. It does not mean the road car will definitely drive all four wheels. Toyota could choose rear-wheel drive for a lighter, simpler sports car, or adapt an electrified or mechanically driven all-wheel-drive system if performance, traction, and regulatory requirements justify the added complexity.

The same caution applies to hybrid power. Toyota has extensive hybrid expertise, but no confirmed announcement says that this mid-engine sports car will be hybrid-assisted. Hybrid hardware could improve response and traction while adding weight, cooling demands, cost, and packaging challenges. A gasoline-only car would likely be simpler; a hybrid could better support the performance targets being discussed. Neither configuration is confirmed.

Open question What can be said now
Model name MR2 is widely expected by enthusiasts, but Toyota has not confirmed the badge.
Production design The FT-Se is relevant context, not proof of the final exterior or interior.
Seating The historical MR2 was a two-seater, but the final configuration of this project has not been formally announced.
Drive system Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both technically plausible; neither is confirmed.
Powertrain The G20E is the key engine link. Gasoline-only versus hybrid-assisted operation remains unresolved.
Performance Horsepower, weight, acceleration, top speed, and transmission details have not been finalized publicly.
Manufacturing Toyota has not announced a production plant or manufacturing partner.
Availability Launch markets, pricing, reservations, and delivery timing remain unknown.

Why a 2030 arrival is being discussed

The reported development status provides the basis for the timing discussion. The project is said to be in the first of four development stages, and the complete route from early development to production generally takes roughly four to five years.

That makes an arrival around 2030 a reasonable estimate if the program proceeds on that kind of schedule. It is not a firm release date, and development programs can change direction, be delayed, or be canceled before production. Toyota has not announced when customers will be able to order the car.

What enthusiasts should watch next

  1. The name: A Toyota announcement confirming “MR2” would settle the most obvious piece of speculation.
  2. A dedicated prototype: Images or testing of a purpose-built mid-engine sports car would reveal more than the GR Yaris development mule.
  3. Engine details: Watch for certified output, torque, emissions information, cooling changes, and road-car durability specifications for the G20E.
  4. Drivetrain confirmation: Toyota will eventually need to clarify whether the car is rear-drive, all-wheel drive, hybrid-assisted, or a combination of those approaches.
  5. Production decisions: A factory, manufacturing partner, market list, and reservation process would indicate that the program has moved beyond early development.
  6. Official timing: Treat any 2030 discussion as provisional until Toyota provides a production schedule.

The bottom line

The important news is real: Toyota has moved a new mid-engine sports car from enthusiast rumor into confirmed Gazoo Racing development. The G20E 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and the running mid-engine GR Yaris M Concept provide credible evidence that Toyota is working on the necessary package.

But the production car is still undefined. The MR2 name, FT-Se connection, final drivetrain, specifications, launch markets, price, and timing remain open. Until Toyota provides those details, this should be reported as a confirmed new mid-engine sports-car project with a likely MR2 lineage—not as a completed reveal or a model that can already be ordered.
