Toyota and Mazda already work together, and that relationship makes a shared future for the next Miata easy to imagine. As of October 2026, though, no Mazda or Toyota statement that I could find confirms that Toyota has a formal role in the next-generation MX-5 (sold as the Miata in North America). Mazda has said it is considering a new car and exploring powertrain options. It has not said who will supply them.
This article separates three things: the Mazda–Toyota relationship that exists today, what Mazda has said about its next roadster, and the case for a partnership that remains analysis rather than company fact.
What Mazda and Toyota already share
The clearest existing link is technical. Mazda’s 2025 sustainability report lists the CX-50 as equipped with Toyota’s hybrid system. That is a concrete case of the two companies applying Toyota hybrid technology to a Mazda vehicle. It does not show that Toyota would supply an engine, platform, battery, or production engineering for a Miata.
Mazda’s 2025 integrated report goes further in describing intent. It says Mazda aims to build on its collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation and other partners as part of development and its Lean Asset Strategy. The report names Toyota, Denso, and BluE Nexus as technology partners. It does not connect that collaboration to the Miata or to any roadster program.

What the CX-50 example does and does not prove
- It proves that Toyota hybrid hardware has been used in a current Mazda model.
- It shows the companies have worked through the practical side of integrating another maker’s system.
- It says nothing about the MX-5’s weight, drivetrain, or development timing.
What Mazda has said about the next MX-5
Mazda’s public statements about the next roadster are limited but specific enough to be useful.
Development and weight target
In a statement to MotorTrend, Mazda USA said it is “currently considering the development of the next-generation MX-5.” It also said it is considering a weight target of between 1,000 kg and 1,200 kg to deliver the “Jinba ittai” driving experience that defines the car. That is a target under consideration, not a finished production specification.

Powertrain
On the drivetrain, Mazda’s statement says the company is “exploring various possibilities while considering regulations and other factors.” It names no chosen system, whether combustion, hybrid, or electric.
The CEO’s non-combustion comment
Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro told Auto Motor und Sport, as quoted by MotorTrend, that the successor “must also be ready for a scenario without a combustion engine. The challenge for us is to make the basic structure lighter without using exotic materials like carbon fiber.” That sets a readiness requirement. It does not say the next car will be electric.

The current car, for reference
For the 2026 North American model, Mazda lists a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 181 hp and 151 lb-ft, with a six-speed manual standard. The Grand Touring trim also offers a six-speed automatic. These figures describe the car on sale now and do not predict the next generation.
Why a partnership is a plausible argument
Mazda’s stated strategy gives the partnership case a business basis. Its Lean Asset Strategy aims to reduce expected investment through collaboration and partnerships. In Mazda’s 2025 corporate materials, that expected investment falls from around 2 trillion yen to around 1.5 trillion yen. That figure covers company-wide electrification, not a Miata-specific budget.

- The model breathtakingly captures the car?s dynamic form with roof and side windows down.
- Features realistic depictions of the underside and interior.
- Metal transfers are included to recreate emblems and side mirror surfaces.
- The model can be assembled as left- or right-hand drive versions, and includes markings to recreate Japanese, U. S. and rest-of-the-world market cars.
The argument runs as follows. Electrification is expensive. Mazda is a relatively small automaker. Shared know-how from a partner with hybrid experience could lower the cost of meeting a readiness requirement without changing the car’s basic character. Mazda’s integrated report pairs this logic with a commitment to its own “joy of driving,” which is the reason a partnership would have to be handled carefully.
That is inference, not confirmation. No source reviewed says that Toyota would contribute to the MX-5, and none gives a savings figure for such work.

Where collaboration could help, and where it creates trade-offs
The table below compares what Mazda has stated with a hypothetical Toyota-assisted scenario. The second column is analysis, not company plans.
| Axis | What Mazda has stated | Hypothetical Toyota-assisted scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 1,000–1,200 kg target under consideration (Mazda USA, 2026) | Hybrid or battery hardware would add mass. No source quantifies this for a roadster. |
| Powertrain | Various possibilities being explored; no system chosen | Toyota hybrid know-how is one possible input. Not confirmed. |
| Driving character | “Jinba ittai” is the stated objective | Depends on tuning and packaging. Not stated by any source. |
| Development investment | Lean Asset Strategy is company-wide; no Miata-specific figure | Not stated by any source |
| Product identity | Mazda describes the MX-5 as a Mazda roadster | Open question: whether shared hardware could sit inside a distinct Mazda car |
The trade-offs are real. A low weight target and a non-combustion readiness requirement pull against each other, because batteries and additional hardware add mass. A partner’s system could help with cost and electrification, but it could also push packaging and tuning away from what Mazda’s driving objective demands. Whether that balance works is an engineering question that the companies have not yet answered publicly.
What remains unconfirmed
- Whether Toyota has any formal role in the next-generation MX-5.
- Whether Mazda and Toyota will share a platform for the Miata and the Toyota GR86.
- Whether Toyota will supply the next Miata’s engine or hybrid system.
- When the next generation will launch.
Online speculation about a shared sports-car program is common, but it is not evidence. Treat it as rumour until a manufacturer confirms it.
What would count as confirmation
A claim that Toyota is part of the next Miata would need an official statement from Mazda or Toyota that names the roadster program. The most useful confirmations would be specific: a named Miata or MX-5 program, a shared platform, a stated technology contribution such as a hybrid or battery system, or a clear assignment of development responsibility. Until one of those appears, the partnership remains a reasonable proposal, not a confirmed plan.
