Two-wheel-drive motorcycles are rare, and the sources available do not confirm ten distinct machines sold today. This guide covers eight notable entries instead: current Rokon models, historical CHRISTINI and Yamaha bikes, a conversion, and a KTM prototype. Each entry is labeled by status so you can tell a machine you may still be able to buy from one that exists only in history.
What two-wheel drive means on a motorcycle
A two-wheel-drive motorcycle sends engine power to both the front and rear wheels. Riders also use “2×2” and “all-wheel drive (AWD)” for the same layout. The label covers several different mechanisms, so two bikes described the same way can work very differently.
How the front-drive systems differ
Two documented designs show how far apart the approaches can be, and Rokon’s drive is described only in general terms.
| Design | Example | How front drive is delivered | Stated detail and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical linked drive | CHRISTINI AWD | Power runs from the motorcycle transmission to the front wheel through linked components, with one-way clutches at the front hub | Front drive runs at approximately 80% of rear-wheel speed under CHRISTINI’s stated operating conditions (CHRISTINI technical page, undated, accessed 2026). This is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent test. |
| Hydraulic front drive | Yamaha WR450F 2-Trac | Front wheel driven hydraulically | Yamaha material from a 2004 context. Further mechanical detail not stated in the sources reviewed. |
| All-wheel drive, mechanism not detailed | Rokon Trail-Breaker and Ranger | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Rokon product information describes utility use, high clearance and wide tires. |
AWD does not guarantee traction, and it does not remove the risk of front-wheel loss of grip. The sources reviewed contain no independent test of stopping distance, cornering or performance, so any claim of a safety or speed advantage for these bikes is unsupported.

The eight entries
Status labels used below: current model, historical model, conversion or racing build, and prototype.
Rokon Trail-Breaker
Status: current Rokon model. Rokon calls itself “The world’s original and longest producing manufacturer of all wheel drive motorcycles.” That is the company’s own positioning, not an independently verified industry ranking. Rokon markets the Trail-Breaker for utility work, with high ground clearance, wide tires and accessories. Confirm the current configuration directly with Rokon before relying on any specification, since none is verified here.

Rokon Ranger
Status: current Rokon variant. Rokon positions the Ranger as a dual-sport machine for road and off-road riding. Treat it as a practical dual-purpose option rather than proof that a two-wheel-drive bike suits high-speed adventure riding. Check its current configuration with the manufacturer.
CHRISTINI AWD 450
Status: historical model, described in a 2012 CHRISTINI launch announcement. The announcement gives a 450 cc engine and AWD details. These are announcement specifications, not verified current specifications, and any launch pricing in the announcement is historical rather than a current quote.

- With a Haynes manual, you can do it yourself...from simple maintenance to basic repairs.
- Haynes writes every book based on a complete teardown of the covered vehicle.
- Haynes learns the best ways to do a job and that makes it quicker, easier and cheaper for you.

CHRISTINI AWD 300
Status: historical configuration, from the same 2012 announcement, which describes a 300 cc version. The same limits apply: the figures are announcement-era, and current availability is not established.
CHRISTINI AWD 450DS
Status: historical, street-legal development. CHRISTINI’s history page records a California approval milestone, but the sources reviewed do not give its date. Registration and emissions rules vary by jurisdiction, so an approval in one place does not establish that the bike is legal where you ride.
CHRISTINI-converted KTM
Status: conversion and racing example, not a catalog model. CHRISTINI’s history describes a KTM upgraded with its AWD system competing in an extreme enduro event. The event and date are not stated in the sources reviewed.
Yamaha WR450F 2-Trac
Status: historical Yamaha dirt bike, not a current Yamaha listing. Yamaha material from 2004 documents its hydraulically driven front wheel. The sources reviewed do not show a current Yamaha model with this system, so treat it as a reference point for how one manufacturer approached two-wheel drive off-road.

KTM 525EXC prototype
Status: tested prototype that never entered production. A secondary motorcycle-history feature recounts a two-wheel-drive experiment on a KTM 525EXC and says it did not reach production. The feature’s date is not stated in the sources reviewed. A prototype is not a bike you can buy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why more motorcycles do not use two-wheel drive
The sources reviewed do not explain why two-wheel drive remains a niche choice. The documented examples cluster in utility, off-road and competition use, which is the clearest pattern available. The question circulates in rider forums, but no market data in these sources measures how common that interest is.
Quick Recap
Checks before you research or buy one
- Confirm the model year and whether the exact configuration is still produced, directly with the manufacturer.
- Check registration, road legality and emissions rules where you live; approvals in one jurisdiction do not carry over.
- Ask about dealer and parts coverage in your area, and how the front-drive components are serviced on your model.
- Match the bike to the job: utility hauling, dual-sport riding and competition each suit different machines.
- Treat any performance claim as the maker’s own description unless an independent test is available.
