Top Fuel on notice? Top EV Racing’s 5,000-hp electric dragster is still chasing eight records

Top EV Racing’s Western Australian electric dragster targets 530 km/h in 3.6 seconds and 612 km/h outright—but its 5,000-hp claims and eight-record campaign remain unverified.

Top EV Racing has not yet shown public evidence that it has broken eight world records. The Western Australian team’s current project pages present the ARC’D and AMP’D electric dragsters as a four-motor, roughly 5,000-hp-class machine designed to accelerate from 0 to 530 km/h across 300 metres in 3.6 seconds, exceed 7G, and eventually target 612 km/h—about 380 mph—through a planned eight-record campaign.

Those are ambitious engineering targets, not homologated race results. As of August 11, 2026, the available evidence shows a continuing or revived prototype program, visible high-power component development, and commercial interest in the underlying technology—but no public timeslip, sanctioned result, FIA homologation, or Guinness entry proving that the headline records were achieved.

A 5,000-hp electric dragster aimed at the territory of Top Fuel

The concept is easy to understand: build an electric dragster with enough power to challenge the fastest straight-line racing machines on earth, then use the car as a technology demonstrator for high-power electric propulsion.

The difficult part is everything contained in that sentence. A car accelerating toward 530 km/h in roughly 300 metres needs more than a large motor. It needs a battery capable of releasing enormous power without unacceptable voltage sag, inverters that can switch that power precisely, cooling systems that can remove heat during an extremely violent pass, a driveline that can survive the torque, and enough aerodynamic and mechanical control to keep the car stable while its tires are trying to convert electric power into forward motion.

Top EV Racing, a Perth-based Western Australian project associated with electronic engineer and drag-racing enthusiast Michael Fragomeni, says it is developing that complete system rather than assembling an electric car from catalog parts. The project’s current public specification includes a four-megawatt electric-motor architecture, a four-unit axial-flux motor array, and a claimed 5,000-hp-class output.

That sounds like a credible reason to pay attention. It is not, by itself, proof that the finished dragster has made a record pass.

What Top EV Racing is actually claiming

The current Top EV Racing site describes the ARC’D and AMP’D dragsters as engineered for:

  • 0–530 km/h in 3.6 seconds across 300 metres;
  • more than 7G during acceleration;
  • a four-megawatt electric-motor system;
  • a target speed of 612 km/h, or approximately 380 mph; and
  • a campaign intended to pursue eight world records.

The site’s wording matters. It describes the project as “seeking 612kph through 8 World Records,” which is an objective, not a statement that eight records have already been set. The site does not publish a dated test result, official timeslip, record certificate, or sanctioning document that converts those numbers from design claims into verified racing results.

There is also a change from the project’s earlier public figures. A 2017 Autodesk customer story described the nearly 10-metre-long “Arc’d Up” solar-supercharged electric land-speed dragster as targeting 0–530 km/h in 4.5 seconds over a quarter mile at 7G, with a top speed above 612 km/h and eight intended speed and elapsed-time records. The current 3.6-second figure is therefore more aggressive than the earlier 4.5-second target, but the available material does not establish that the quicker number came from a measured run.

Figure What it represents Evidence status
0–530 km/h in 3.6 seconds Current acceleration objective over 300 metres Project claim or design target
612 km/h / 380 mph Intended top-speed and record-campaign objective Project claim or design target
5,000 hp Published powertrain class or array target Not a publicly documented dyno result
Eight records Planned speed and elapsed-time record campaign Not publicly verified in the sources reviewed

The numbers behind the electric powertrain

The project’s original 2017 description called for a 1,000-volt system producing roughly 5,000 hp and more than 17,000 lb-ft of torque from zero rpm. It also said the team was developing its own motors, inverters, batteries, and driveline components because off-the-shelf hardware could not handle the required power and discharge rates.

The current site adds more detail to that broad description. Its progress gallery identifies a four-unit QFM-360-X HyperPower axial-flux motor array, cryogenic coolant inlets, a Top Fuel-specification 40-spline floating drive, and a 5,000-hp array.

A useful scale check illustrates why the electrical system is so demanding. Four megawatts at 1,000 volts would equal approximately 4,000 amps before accounting for losses, voltage variation, inverter efficiency, and the difference between electrical input and mechanical output. That is a simple power calculation, not a report of the dragster’s measured operating current. It does show why the battery bus, conductors, switching hardware, cooling loops, connectors, and safety systems are central parts of the vehicle rather than supporting details.

Electric motors have a natural advantage for a launch: they can deliver substantial torque without waiting for an engine to build rpm or for a conventional transmission to complete a gear change. But peak motor power is only useful if the tires can accept it. A car attempting a pass at this level must balance torque delivery, tire deformation, wheel speed, traction control, chassis attitude, battery discharge, thermal limits, and aerodynamic stability over a few seconds.

That is why Top EV Racing’s decision to pursue custom hardware is technically plausible. It is also why the existence of a motor array or a photographed assembly cannot be treated as proof of a complete, repeatable race car. The launch, control software, battery system, driveline, tires, structure, and safety procedures all have to work together on a sanctioned track.

Where CAD and simulation fit

The 2017 Autodesk case study recorded the use of Fusion 360 for electric-vehicle design and collaboration. In a project this unusual, CAD and simulation are not decorative software choices: they can help engineers iterate on motor mounts, lightweight structures, aerodynamic parts, packaging, and components intended for additive manufacturing or advanced alloys.

Generative design and additive manufacturing can reduce mass or create shapes that would be difficult to machine conventionally, while simulation can expose stress, thermal, and packaging problems before a part reaches the car. None of that removes the need for physical validation. Extreme acceleration loads, vibration, heat, tire forces, and high-voltage faults eventually have to be dealt with by hardware on the track.

From a 2017 promise to a longer development story

When the project was reported in 2017, Top EV Racing said it was approximately 12 months from a debut run. The proposed test program was deliberately staged: secure the necessary car and driver licensing, complete a burnout, demonstrate a launch, and then progress to quarter-track and half-track runs before attempting more ambitious passes.

That sequence is important context. The original article presented the 5,000-hp specification and 612-km/h objective as future performance, not as an existing record. It also reported that the Australian National Drag Racing Association had agreed to allow the car to run alongside Top Fuel once the vehicle was sanctioned. That was permission for a potential future appearance, not evidence that Top EV Racing had raced against Top Fuel.

By 2020, Fragomeni had created HyperPower Technologies as a separate business intended to handle commercial interest in the high-power electric system. Reporting at the time described interest from mining, transport, aerospace, and hyperloop-related sectors. That commercialization angle is legitimate, but it needs careful wording: the available evidence supports describing the dragster as a technology demonstrator and a route toward scalable high-power electric systems. It does not establish that the dragster’s technology entered production, that a named customer signed a major contract, or that a commercial vehicle program was delivered.

Has the electric dragster broken the eight records?

There is no public verification of that in the sources reviewed through August 11, 2026.

The current website still presents the project as seeking the records. Its 2026 copyright notice, Perth headquarters listing, Top EV Pty. Ltd. identification, and progress imagery—including the four-motor array—show that the web presence remains active-looking. They do not establish a public test pass, a race entry, or a certified record.

This is an evidence distinction, not a claim that no private testing has ever taken place. The team may have conducted work that is not publicly documented. But a defensible report cannot turn photographs, promotional specifications, or future-tense objectives into an achieved world record.

  • a dated run and a clearly identified venue;
  • the exact distance, timing method, speed trap, class, and surface;
  • independent officials or a recognized sanctioning body;
  • an official timeslip or published result; and
  • compliance with the relevant record rules.

For example, FIA drag-record rules recognize standing-start acceleration distances including the eighth mile and quarter mile for world or absolute world records. They also prescribe record-attempt procedures, including two runs within 1 percent of one another. The exact rules applicable to Top EV Racing’s proposed eight-record campaign would depend on the records sought and the governing organization. “Eight world records” is not sufficiently precise to evaluate without those details.

The electric benchmark has moved since the original story

The electric drag-racing comparison used in the 2017 report was a 7.274-second, 185-mph quarter-mile pass attributed to the Swamp Rat team and the National Electric Drag Racing Association.

Electric drag racing has since advanced substantially, although the records belong to different cars and categories:

Car or benchmark Elapsed time Speed Context
Swamp Rat / NEDRA benchmark cited in 2017 7.274 seconds 185 mph Electric dragster benchmark reported at the time
Ford Super Cobra Jet 1800, 2024 7.759 seconds 180.14 mph NHRA-reported full-bodied electric drag-car record; the car had previously run 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph in 2021
Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200, 2026 6.766 seconds 222.36 mph NHRA-reported quickest quarter-mile time and fastest trap speed at the time of publication

The 2026 Ford figures are the most useful current reality check. They show that serious electric drag racing has moved from seven-second experimentation toward six-second, 220-mph-plus performance. They do not validate Top EV Racing’s proposed 530-km/h or 612-km/h figures. A 222.36-mph pass is extremely fast, but it is still far below the project’s approximately 380-mph top-speed objective—and the cars, classes, distances, and record definitions are not necessarily identical.

How the proposed car compares with modern Top Fuel

Top Fuel remains the more relevant benchmark for the kind of violent acceleration Top EV Racing wants to challenge. Current Guinness material lists Brittany Force’s 343.16-mph run at Sonoma, California, on July 25, 2025. That pass covered 1,000 feet in 3.645 seconds. Guinness also describes modern Top Fuel engines as producing around 11,000 hp and accelerating from 0 to 100 mph in less than one second.

On raw published targets, Top EV Racing’s 612-km/h objective converts to roughly 380 mph, which is higher than Force’s 343.16-mph benchmark. Its 530-km/h figure converts to about 329 mph. But those comparisons must not be presented as a simple “electric versus Top Fuel” victory calculation.

Most modern Top Fuel and Funny Car racing is conducted over 1,000 feet rather than the traditional 1,320-foot quarter mile. The Top EV Racing material refers variously to 300 metres, a quarter mile, half-track runs, and a top-speed objective. A 300-metre run is close to 1,000 feet—300 metres is about 984 feet—but the small difference is not the only issue. The timing start, speed-measurement point, track layout, class rules, tire and surface conditions, and sanctioning body all affect the meaning of the number.

The fair comparison: Top EV Racing’s 530-km/h and 612-km/h figures are targets that could become significant if achieved under a recognized rule set. They cannot yet be called faster than a current Top Fuel record simply because the headline number is larger.

The electric car could still be compelling even without beating Top Fuel on every metric. Electric propulsion offers precise torque control, no combustion-engine gearshift interruption, and the potential to package multiple motors close to the driven axle. Top Fuel, meanwhile, benefits from a mature class with highly developed launch technique, specialized tires, enormous combustion power, and a well-established sanctioning framework. The only meaningful verdict would come from a comparable, independently measured pass.

What would have to happen before the headline becomes a record?

  1. Complete the full vehicle. A motor array and drivetrain components are only part of the system. The battery, inverters, cooling, structure, control electronics, tires, braking, parachutes, and high-voltage safety architecture all need to be integrated.
  2. Validate the launch at lower speeds. The staged program described in 2017—burnout, launch, quarter-track and half-track runs—remains the sensible way to expose problems without immediately committing to a full-speed pass.
  3. Secure sanctioning and licensing. The car and driver would need to meet the applicable technical and safety requirements before an official race or record attempt could count.
  4. Define each record. The team would need to specify whether each attempt concerns elapsed time, terminal speed, distance, class, or another category, and identify the governing authority.
  5. Make the result repeatable. A single spectacular speed is not enough where the rules require multiple runs or where the claim is meant to stand as a world record.
  6. Publish independent evidence. Timeslips, timing data, official results, and a dated account of the attempt would allow the public to distinguish a record from a development test.

The unresolved question

Top EV Racing is more than a fanciful horsepower graphic. The project has documented engineering ambitions, a custom four-motor architecture, advanced cooling and driveline components, and a broader HyperPower commercialization effort. Those are meaningful signs of development.

But the most spectacular claims remain future-facing. The 3.6-second 0–530-km/h target, the 612-km/h objective, the 5,000-hp figure, and the eight-record campaign should all be described as published targets or project claims unless and until independent results appear.

That leaves the story in a more interesting place than a premature “electric dragster breaks records” headline. The real question is whether Top EV Racing can turn a highly ambitious prototype and component program into a sanctioned, repeatable pass—and whether its electric system can deliver its promised performance outside the design presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Top EV Racing broken eight world records?

Not according to the public evidence reviewed through August 11, 2026. The company’s current site still describes the project as seeking 612 km/h through eight world records, and no official timeslip, sanctioned result, homologation, or Guinness entry was found to verify that the records were achieved.

How fast is Top EV Racing’s proposed electric dragster?

Its current published targets are 0–530 km/h across 300 metres in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 612 km/h, or approximately 380 mph. Those figures remain project targets rather than independently verified race results.

Is Top EV Racing’s electric dragster faster than Top Fuel?

That has not been established. The 612-km/h target is higher than Brittany Force’s Guinness-listed 343.16-mph Top Fuel benchmark, but the comparison is not direct because the cars may use different distances, timing points, classes, surfaces, and rules. Top EV Racing has not yet published a comparable sanctioned pass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the latest electric drag-racing benchmark?

NHRA reported that Ford’s Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 ran a quickest quarter-mile time of 6.766 seconds and a fastest trap speed of 222.36 mph in 2026. Those figures show major progress in electric drag racing, but they do not confirm Top EV Racing’s proposed 530-km/h or 612-km/h performance.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Top EV Racing’s Perth-based electric dragster is an ambitious, technically credible development project with a claimed 5,000-hp-class four-motor system and an eight-record goal. It is not yet a verified record holder. Until a sanctioned, independently timed pass is published, the fairest description is an electric dragster still chasing the numbers—not one that has already put Top Fuel in the rear-view mirror.
