For most riders, buy the GoPro HERO13 Black. It combines strong stabilization, 5.3K60 recording, flexible 8:7 framing, GPS, a removable Enduro battery and broad mounting support. Choose the GoPro MAX2 when you want to reframe a 360-degree recording later, the HERO12 Black when it is substantially cheaper, the LIT HERO when minimum weight matters most, and the MISSION 1 PRO for premium low-light and cinematic production.
The right motorcycle camera depends less on the biggest resolution number than on mounting position, wind audio, battery strategy, low-light behavior and how much editing you are willing to do.

1. GoPro HERO13 Black: best overall
Why it suits motorcycles
HERO13 is the safest all-round choice for chin-mounted POV, touring, ride documentation and general motorcycle content. HyperSmooth stabilization, a near-square 8:7 sensor and optional HB-Series lens mods make it easy to create both widescreen and vertical versions. Magnetic-latch mounting, GPS data overlays and a removable battery are useful on the road. GoPro lists 5.3K60, 10-bit HLG HDR and a 1,900 mAh Enduro battery; its stated runtime exceeds 2.5 hours at 1080p30 and 1.5 hours at 4K30 or 5.3K30 under GoPro’s test conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- The Perfect Entry-Level GoPro: Simplified controls let you easily tap and swipe between video, photo and slo-mo modes
- Rugged + Waterproof to 16ft (5m): Completely waterproof and built with legendary GoPro durability, LIT HERO is ready to capture the fun whether you’re ripping through mud, snow or water (down to 16ft/5m) or just exploring nature or a new city.
- Built-in Light: LIT HERO’s built-in light can help you illuminate scenes that need a little more light or capture shots in total darkness. It features 3 brightness settings and even works when your camera is off or when it’s plugged in and charging.
- Stunning Image Quality: LIT HERO captures the action in ultra HD 4K video while bumping the frame rate up to 60 frames per second for more fluid motion and the ability to play back video in 2x slow motion. You can also take 12MP photos and grab photos up to 11MP from your videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- What’s Included: LIT HERO Camera, Light Diffuser, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
Mount and audio advice
A full-face helmet chin mount usually gives the most natural perspective with less leverage than a top mount. Check the helmet shell, chin-bar shape and manufacturer instructions before attaching anything. Built-in microphones can be overwhelmed by turbulent air, so serious narration needs a protected helmet microphone or a separate audio track.
Who should skip it
Choose another model if you mainly need 360 reframing, the lightest possible camera or a one-inch sensor for difficult night scenes. Low-light performance remains a limitation.
Verdict: The best default motorcycle GoPro for most riders.

Why it suits motorcycles
MAX2 records the entire scene so you can choose the viewpoint after the ride. That is valuable for rear-facing shots, follow footage, social crops and mounts that cannot be aimed precisely. GoPro lists true 8K 360 video, 5.6K60, 4K100 360 slow motion, 4K60 single-lens capture, 10-bit color, 360 Horizon Lock, replaceable lenses and standard GoPro fingers, a 1/4-20 thread and magnetic mounting.
Trade-offs
Eight-kilobyte 360 capture is not the same as an 8K forward-facing image: a reframed view uses only part of the sphere, and heavy crops reduce effective detail. Reframing also means larger files and more post-production. The lenses are exposed, and a poorly chosen helmet position can include the rider or helmet in the shot. Independent testing found low-light performance particularly weak (Cycling Weekly).
MAX2 lists a six-microphone array, stereo audio, wind-noise reduction and Bluetooth audio support, but test the setup inside your helmet at actual riding speeds.
Verdict: Buy it for framing flexibility, not as an automatic replacement for a conventional POV camera.

3. GoPro HERO12 Black: best value full-size HERO
HERO12 remains compelling when its price is materially below HERO13. Its conventional body, removable battery, 5.3K-class image quality and HyperSmooth stabilization cover most forward-facing motorcycle work. It is also a sensible second camera for a handlebar, tank or rear mount.
You give up HERO13’s newer battery design, magnetic latch, Wi-Fi 6 and HB-Series lens ecosystem. If GPS or current telemetry is important, verify support for your exact HERO12 firmware and regional model before buying. At nearly the same price as HERO13, the older camera is difficult to justify.
Verdict: The smart bargain when the discount is substantial.
4. GoPro LIT HERO: best lightweight option
LIT HERO weighs about 3.2 ounces in Tom’s Guide testing and records 4K60 through a 165-degree lens. It has a built-in light, magnetic mounting, built-in fingers, a 1/4-20 thread, a replaceable lens cover and 5-meter waterproofing (Tom’s Guide; GoPro).
The battery is fixed, stabilization is applied in Quik rather than fully in-camera, and external microphones are unsupported. The LED can help with close or stationary subjects but cannot replace a motorcycle headlight at road distances. These limitations make LIT HERO less suitable for multi-hour touring or narration-heavy vlogging.
Verdict: A good minimalist helmet camera when low weight outranks battery and audio flexibility.
5. GoPro MISSION 1 PRO: best premium creator camera
MISSION 1 PRO is aimed at creators who need a one-inch sensor, 8K60, 8K open-gate 4:3 recording, 4K120, 50 MP stills, log/HDR workflows, advanced audio and stronger low-light capability. GoPro lists a 2,150 mAh Enduro 2 battery, fast charging, GPS overlays, 20-meter waterproofing and up to five hours of continuous recording under its stated conditions. A dedicated magnetic power door and cable kit supports continuous USB-C power.

- 4K Ultra HD action camera: Professional 4K30Fps & 2.7K30Fps video with 20MP photos at up to 30 frames per second for incredible photos, which is 4 times the resolution of traditional HD cameras.
- Smooth Stabilization: Built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) delivers steady and smooth videos. It can enable excellent footage even you or the object is in fast-moving.
- 131ft waterproof camera: AKASO EK7000 is designed to withstand extreme environments, together with durable waterproof case. With the accessories, transform it for indoor and outdoor activities.
- Wireless wrist remote control sports camera: With a wrist 2.4G remote, you can capture the world in an all-new way. Controlling the camera, framing shots or recording video is convenient. (THE REMOTE IS NOT WATERPROOF)
- Built-in Wi-Fi, edit & share your action in minutes: Just download App(AKASO GO) on your phone or tablet and connect with this action camera. Wi-Fi signal ranges up to 10 meters. MicroSD card is not included.
Its larger body, narrower native view and more demanding production workflow make it less convenient for a casual chin mount. Digital Camera World notes that GoPro still positions HERO13 as the stronger product for immersive POV (comparison).

- High Dynamic Range Video + Photo: HERO12 Black takes its best-in-class image quality to the next level with HDR for both videos (5.3K and 4K) and photos. Great in environments with both shadows and bright light, HDR captures the subtle details of the scene that might typically blend into the darkness of shadows or disappear in the bright spots of your shot. The result is dynamic footage with true-to-life color and precision.
- Unbelieveable Image Quality: With 5.3K video that gives you 91% more resolution than 4K and an incredible 665% more than 1080p, HERO12 Black captures the action with crisp detail and cinematic image quality with High Dynamic Range (HDR) while also taking 27MP photos. You can also grab stunning photos up to 24.7MP of your favorite shots from your videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- Emmy Award- Winning HyperSmooth 6.0 Stabilization: HyperSmooth continues to set the bar for insanely smooth footage and has the hardware to back it up—a 2021 Emmy for In-Camera Sensor and Software Stabilization. HERO12 Black makes it even better by maximizing HyperSmooth AutoBoost performance with more stabilization while still delivering less image cropping. Bike, skate, ski, chase your kids through the park or get awesome pet POV shots—even the shakiest footage comes out silky smooth.
- Rugged + Waterproof to 33ft (10m): Completely waterproof and as tough as ever, HERO12 Black is ready to capture the fun on any adventure. Its legendary durability can take a beating and keep going, whether you’re ripping through mud, snow or water (down to 33ft/10m). A water-repelling lens cover even helps eliminate lens flare and other artifacts to make your photos and videos even more stunning.
- What's Included: HERO12 Black, Enduro Rechargeable Battery, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
Mounting positions and their consequences
- Chin mount: natural POV and usually less drag; best default for HERO13.
- Helmet top: higher viewpoint but more wind leverage and snag risk.
- Handlebar: shows the bike clearly but transmits vibration.
- Tank: stable and useful for controls, although the motorcycle can dominate the frame.
- Crash bar or frame: dramatic low angle, with greater exposure to debris and vibration.
- Rear-facing: useful for traffic context and follow shots.
- 360 extension pole: creative third-person views, but inspect clearance, flex and snag risk carefully.
Use current model-compatible accessories from GoPro’s Moto and mount catalog pages.
Audio, power and storage
Wind-proof the narration
- Place a microphone inside the helmet near your mouth, away from direct airflow.
- Add a windscreen or helmet-specific cover.
- Test at idle, urban speed and highway speed with the visor in its normal position.
- Record engine sound separately if it matters, and make a clear sync sound at the start.
MAX2 supports Bluetooth audio and wireless microphones; LIT HERO does not support external microphones. Compatibility with intercoms and earbuds must be tested rather than assumed.
Plan for battery and motorcycle power
Carry spare batteries for HERO13, HERO12, MAX2 or MISSION 1 PRO. A regulated USB-C motorcycle supply can extend recording, but route cables away from steering movement, hot parts, suspension travel and pinch points. An open power door should not be treated as waterproof. Advertised runtimes change with resolution, stabilization, GPS, screen use, heat and wind.
Use suitable memory cards
MAX2 specifies V30 or UHS-3 media. Use a reputable card from GoPro’s current compatibility list, format it in-camera after backup, test it at the intended setting and carry a spare. Eight-kilobyte 360 files consume storage much faster than ordinary 4K footage.
Starting settings for motorcycle rides
- Daytime POV: 4K60 for balance; 5.3K60 for extra cropping latitude.
- Lower light: try 4K30 or an available low-light mode; lower frame rates can reduce noise.
- Social flexibility: use HERO13 8:7 or another supported 4:3 mode.
- 360: use 5.6K60 for a quality/storage balance; reserve 8K for reframing latitude.
- Disable unnecessary wireless features and turn the screen off after setup.
Heat, vibration, weather and safety
High resolution, high frame rates, GPS, direct sun and a stationary camera increase heat. Test the exact configuration before a long ride, use airflow while moving and avoid leaving a recording camera in direct sun while stopped. Severe vibration comes from loose adhesive bases, flexible arms, cheap clamps or engine resonance; use a short rigid mount and inspect it after rough sections.
Water ratings apply only with intact seals and closed doors: MAX2 and LIT HERO are rated to 5 meters, while MISSION 1 lists 20 meters. HERO13’s current rating should be checked on its official page. Impact, debris, damaged seals or an open power door can remove that protection.

Total system cost matters
Budget for the camera plus a helmet or bike mount, spare batteries and charger, a high-endurance microSD card, wind protection or an audio interface, lens protection and a regulated power cable. GoPro’s subscription may add cloud backup, Quik tools, discounts and replacement benefits, but availability, fees and terms vary by country (GoPro subscription details).
