BYD, Geely, Changan, Chery, and NIO are five Chinese EV brands and automotive groups worth knowing in 2026. They are not presented as a strict sales ranking: the selection balances scale, growth, technology, and international relevance. XPeng is the leading honorable mention for AI-assisted driving and recent delivery momentum.
Comparisons require care because the companies use overlapping terms such as EV, NEV, electrified vehicle, group sales, and brand deliveries. Several report both battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles as NEVs, while NIO reports deliveries across three brands.
The five Chinese EV brands to know are BYD, Geely, Changan, Chery, and NIO. This is a curated list rather than a definitive sales ranking. It combines scale, growth, technological distinctiveness, and international relevance to show the different ways Chinese automakers are competing in the electric-vehicle market.
The list also needs one qualification: Chinese manufacturers do not always report comparable figures. BYD, Geely, Changan, and Chery commonly report new-energy vehicle or NEV sales, which can include both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. NIO’s reported deliveries include its NIO, ONVO, and firefly brands. The numbers below are therefore identified carefully rather than presented as a single league table.

What counts as a Chinese EV brand?
In everyday use, EV often means a battery-electric vehicle, or BEV. In Chinese automotive reporting, however, NEV is a broader category that generally includes battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Some companies also discuss electrified vehicles using their own reporting definitions.
There is a second complication: the word brand can refer to an individual consumer marque, an automaker, or a wider automotive group. Geely, Changan, and Chery all operate or support multiple nameplates. Their group results should not be read as sales for one model range or one badge.
| Brand or group | Why it matters | Reported scale or indicator | Names and technologies to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD | Mass-market scale, battery expertise, and a global product range | About 4.6 million reported NEV sales in 2025 | Blade Battery, e-Platform, DM-i, Seal, Dolphin, Atto 3 |
| Geely | A multi-brand group moving mainstream, premium, and luxury products toward electrification | 3,024,567 total vehicles and 1,687,767 NEVs reported for 2025 | EX5, Galaxy, Zeekr, Lynk & Co |
| Changan | An established manufacturer with rapidly expanding NEV and export operations | 2.913 million total vehicles and more than 1.1 million NEVs reported for 2025 | Deepal, Avatr, S07, Avatr 11, Avatr 12 |
| Chery | Export strength and a broad portfolio of electrified vehicles and sub-brands | 1.145 million exports and 583,569 NEVs reported for 2024 | Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8, CSH, Exeed, Jetour, iCAR |
| NIO | Premium EV ownership built around software, services, and battery swapping | 326,028 deliveries across three brands reported for 2025 | Power Swap Stations, Battery-as-a-Service, ET5, ET9, EL8 |
1. BYD: the scale and technology benchmark
BYD is the clearest starting point for understanding China’s EV industry. It is not simply a fast-growing startup selling a few electric cars. It is a high-volume manufacturer with a broad portfolio, in-house battery expertise, multiple powertrain options, and an expanding international presence.
In its 2025 sustainability reporting, BYD said it sold approximately 4.6 million new-energy vehicles during the year and remained the global NEV sales leader. That figure is important, but it must be described accurately: BYD’s NEV definition includes both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids using its DM technology. It is not a claim that BYD sold 4.6 million battery-electric cars alone. BYD’s own reporting provides the relevant company definition and figure.
Why BYD stands out
BYD’s advantage is partly vertical integration. The company is closely associated with its Blade Battery, its e-Platform vehicle architectures, and the DM-i family of plug-in-hybrid systems. This combination allows BYD to compete with fully electric vehicles in markets with charging infrastructure while also offering plug-in hybrids in markets where long-distance travel, apartment living, or limited public charging make a BEV less convenient.
The portfolio extends from relatively affordable hatchbacks and compact SUVs to larger sedans, SUVs, premium vehicles, buses, and commercial vehicles. That breadth matters because it gives BYD more ways to enter a market than a manufacturer dependent on one expensive crossover.
BYD models and technologies worth knowing
- BYD Seal: an internationally recognizable battery-electric sedan and one of the brand’s better-known global nameplates.
- BYD Dolphin: a compact battery-electric hatchback aimed at higher-volume markets.
- BYD Atto 3: a globally marketed electric SUV known as the Yuan Plus in China.
- DM-i: BYD’s plug-in-hybrid technology family, which is why some of its reported NEV totals include vehicles that are not pure EVs.
- Blade Battery: BYD’s signature battery technology and one of the main reasons the company is discussed as a battery manufacturer as well as a vehicle brand.
BYD’s international footprint is also significant. The company said its global presence covered more than 110 countries and regions by late 2025, and that overseas sales during the first 11 months of 2025 exceeded its total overseas sales for all of 2024. Those statements come from BYD’s company materials and should not be interpreted as proof that every BYD model is sold in every country. BYD’s international overview illustrates the breadth of its expansion.
Best way to understand BYD: it shows why Chinese EV competition is not limited to new technology startups. BYD combines manufacturing scale, batteries, hybrids, BEVs, and global distribution.

2. Geely: a multi-brand route to electrification
Geely is important both as a consumer-facing vehicle brand and as the center of a wider automotive portfolio. In the Geely Auto Group structure, the principal brands include Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr. Together they cover mainstream, technology-focused, premium, and more luxury-oriented segments.

Geely reported 3,024,567 total vehicle sales and 1,687,767 NEV sales for 2025 in its Auto China communication. These are group-level figures, not sales for the standard Geely-badged range alone. Geely’s 2026 Auto China communication is the source for those reported totals.
The group’s electrification growth was already visible in its previous reporting. Geely reported 888,235 new-energy and electrified vehicle sales in 2024, up 92% year over year, followed by more than 725,000 electrified and NEV sales in the first half of 2025. Because the company uses both electrified and NEV terminology in its communications, those figures should not be casually compared with a rival’s narrower BEV-only total. Geely’s 2024 results release provides the earlier comparison point.
Why Geely stands out
Geely’s distinctive strategy is portfolio management. A single corporate group can use different brands, designs, platforms, and price points without asking one badge to serve every customer. That gives it a way to compete against mass-market manufacturers while also pursuing premium electric vehicles.
The Geely EX5 is one example of the group’s global electric push. The Geely Galaxy family is a major Chinese-market NEV line, although international communications may present some of those products under Geely NEV naming. Zeekr represents the premium electric side of the Geely Auto portfolio, while Lynk & Co spans hybrid and electric products with a technology-focused identity.
Do not confuse Geely brands with the entire Geely ecosystem
Geely Auto Group is not the same thing as the wider Zhejiang Geely Holding ecosystem. International marques such as Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and smart may have ownership, investment, or technical relationships within that broader ecosystem, but they should not automatically be counted as vehicles sold under the Geely consumer brand.
Best way to understand Geely: it is a case study in how a Chinese automotive group uses multiple brands and shared resources to move into electrification across several price bands.
3. Changan: an established automaker with fast-growing NEV brands
Changan counters the idea that China’s EV progress is driven only by recently founded startups. Changan is a long-established manufacturer with large-scale production, substantial research and development resources, and an increasingly important portfolio of electrified brands.
Recommended Free Tools
Changan reported 2.913 million total vehicle sales in 2025 and NEV sales of more than 1.1 million units. One company communication gives the NEV figure as 1.109 million, representing a 51% year-over-year increase. The figures are company-reported and include the company’s stated NEV scope. Changan’s global strategy announcement also describes its international expansion.
Why Changan stands out
Changan combines an existing manufacturing base with newer, more design- and technology-led electric offerings. Its international portfolio can include the Changan name as well as electrified brands such as Deepal and Avatr. The precise corporate relationship and model availability can differ by country, so a Deepal or Avatr vehicle should not automatically be treated as a standard Changan-badged model.

Changan said its vehicles were sold in roughly 117 to 118 countries, supported by more than 1,100 overseas outlets. It also reported overseas sales of 637,000 vehicles in 2025. Those figures make Changan relevant not only as a domestic Chinese manufacturer but also as a company building the distribution network needed for international EV sales.
Changan models and brands worth knowing
- Deepal S07: an example of Changan’s technology-led electric expansion and a recognizable model in the Deepal range.
- Deepal: a newer electrified brand associated with Changan’s effort to compete in modern SUV and sedan segments.
- Avatr 11 and Avatr 12: premium, design-forward vehicles associated with the wider Changan ecosystem.
- Changan’s broader NEV portfolio: important because the company’s electrification story is not dependent on a single flagship vehicle.
Best way to understand Changan: it demonstrates how an incumbent Chinese automaker can use scale, engineering resources, and new sub-brands to accelerate into the global EV market.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Chery: the export-led Chinese automaker
Chery is especially useful for understanding the export side of China’s automotive rise. While some Chinese EV coverage focuses on brands trying to establish themselves in a handful of wealthy markets, Chery has built a broad international business across multiple regions and nameplates.
Chery reported 2.603 million total vehicle sales, 1.145 million exports, and 583,569 NEV sales for 2024. In the first half of 2025, it reported 1.26 million total vehicles, including 550,000 exports and 360,000 NEVs. These are useful indicators of scale and export reach, but they cover different reporting periods and should not be treated as a like-for-like ranking against the full-year figures of another company. Chery’s 2024 results announcement contains the earlier figures.
In a later 2025 communication, Chery described annual NEV deliveries as exceeding 900,000 units and said NEVs represented 90% of its new-model launches. Because this is a company-reported retrospective and may use a group-wide definition, it is best treated as Chery’s reported figure rather than used as a precise, directly comparable ranking statistic. Chery’s later communication provides that claim and its context.
Why Chery stands out
Chery’s differentiator is not only battery technology. Its strength is the combination of a broad product range, established export channels, and multiple brands designed for different markets. Depending on the country, buyers may encounter vehicles under the Chery, Exeed, Jetour, or iCAR names.

That makes Chery relevant to countries where charging infrastructure is developing but buyers still want lower-emission driving and the flexibility of a combustion-engine backup.
Chery models and technologies worth knowing
- Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8: SUV families that may be offered with plug-in-hybrid powertrains in selected markets.
- CSH: Chery’s hybrid technology branding, used as part of its broader new-energy strategy.
- Exeed: a more premium-oriented nameplate within Chery’s wider portfolio.
- Jetour: an international-facing brand whose exact product mix varies by region.
- iCAR: an example of Chery’s effort to create differentiated, technology-oriented electric products.
Best way to understand Chery: it represents the export and market-coverage story. Its importance comes from how its vehicles and sub-brands can reach countries where other Chinese EV brands may not yet have an established retail presence.
5. NIO: the premium EV and battery-swapping specialist
NIO belongs on this list for a different reason. It does not match BYD, Geely, or Changan in overall volume. Its importance is its distinctive premium-EV ownership model, which combines vehicle software, digital services, charging, and battery swapping.

NIO Inc. reported 326,028 deliveries in 2025 across the NIO, ONVO, and firefly brands. The NIO brand itself accounted for 178,806 deliveries, with ONVO and firefly contributing the remainder. This distinction matters: the larger figure is for the company’s multi-brand operation, not for the NIO badge alone. NIO’s 2025 delivery announcement provides the breakdown.
Why NIO stands out
NIO has made its Power ecosystem central to the ownership proposition. Instead of relying only on conventional plug-in charging, eligible NIO drivers can use battery-swapping stations to exchange a depleted battery for a charged one. NIO describes the process as fully automatic on its U.S. site, but the practical benefit depends on the existence, location, vehicle compatibility, pricing, and operating status of stations in a driver’s market.
NIO reported 3,172 Power Swap Stations in March 2025. It has also described partnerships with CATL and other automakers to expand battery-swapping standards and infrastructure. The company’s charging strategy includes home charging, destination charging, and fast charging in addition to swapping. NIO’s infrastructure announcement describes the reported station count and partnership activity.
NIO models and ownership technologies worth knowing
- ET5 and ET7: premium electric sedans in NIO’s range.
- ES6: an electric SUV nameplate, with naming and availability varying by market.
- ES8 and EL8: related large premium SUV naming used in different markets.
- ET9: a premium flagship and technology showcase.
- Power Swap Stations: the battery-exchange infrastructure that differentiates NIO from most EV manufacturers.
- Battery-as-a-Service: NIO’s battery subscription and ownership concept, where offered and subject to local terms.
Battery swapping is not automatically better than conventional charging. It requires expensive infrastructure, standardized battery formats, and a sufficiently large network. For a driver who cannot access a nearby swap station, the benefit may be limited. NIO is included because it is one of the clearest examples of a manufacturer trying to make infrastructure and service design part of the product itself.
Best way to understand NIO: it is a premium-EV experiment in which the vehicle, software, charging network, battery ownership, and user services are designed as one ecosystem.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Honorable mention: XPeng
XPeng is a credible alternative to NIO, particularly for readers interested in AI-assisted driving, software, and recent delivery growth. XPeng reported 429,445 vehicle deliveries in 2025, up 125.9% year over year, including 45,008 overseas deliveries. It said it operated in 60 countries and regions and had 3,159 self-operated charging stations at the end of 2025. XPeng’s full-year delivery release contains those company-reported figures.
XPeng is not excluded because it lacks significance. The editorial trade-off is that the main five provide a broader view of the market: BYD illustrates mass-market scale, Geely and Changan illustrate multi-brand established manufacturers, Chery illustrates export-led growth, and NIO illustrates premium infrastructure experimentation. XPeng would be the natural choice for a follow-up focused on AI-assisted driving and software-defined vehicles.
Advanced driver-assistance features should not be described as autonomous driving without specific independent evidence and a precise definition. Capabilities, regulatory permissions, hardware, software versions, and availability vary by model and country.
How these five represent different parts of China’s EV market
| If you want to understand… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mass-market volume and vertical integration | BYD | Its reported NEV scale, battery focus, broad model range, and BEV/PHEV mix show the breadth of the market. |
| How one group covers several price bands | Geely | Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr demonstrate a multi-brand approach to mainstream and premium electrification. |
| Established automakers moving rapidly into NEVs | Changan | Its large manufacturing base, NEV growth, Deepal range, and Avatr association illustrate the transition. |
| China’s export and distribution advantage | Chery | Its reported export volumes and multiple international nameplates make it especially relevant outside China. |
| Alternative ownership and charging models | NIO | Battery swapping, Battery-as-a-Service, and connected premium services are central to its proposition. |
| AI-assisted driving and delivery momentum | XPeng | It is the strongest honorable mention for a technology-focused comparison. |
What this list does not prove
Sales volume is not the same as reliability, safety, resale value, driving enjoyment, or customer support. A company’s reported NEV total is not automatically comparable with another company’s BEV total. A large overseas footprint does not mean a particular model is approved, sold, serviced, or supported in your country.

Likewise, a manufacturer’s statement about AI, intelligent driving, charging, battery life, or swapping is not an independent comparative test. Buyers should check crash-test results from the relevant market, local warranty terms, software and driver-assistance restrictions, parts and service coverage, charging compatibility, and the precise equipment fitted to the local version of a vehicle.
Availability matters more than the badge
Chinese EV brands are expanding internationally, but availability remains highly market-specific. The same model may use a different name in China and overseas, may be sold by a different sub-brand, or may not be offered at all in a particular country. Import rules, tariffs, homologation, charging standards, data regulations, dealer networks, and after-sales support can all affect whether a vehicle is a realistic purchase.
Before comparing prices, check the official site or authorized importer for your country. Confirm the exact model year, battery and powertrain, charging connector, warranty, software features, service locations, replacement-battery policy, and whether the advertised delivery figure refers to the brand, the group, or a group of brands.
Bottom line
BYD, Geely, Changan, Chery, and NIO are the five Chinese EV names most useful for building a clear picture of the sector. BYD is the scale benchmark; Geely shows the power of a multi-brand group; Changan represents established-manufacturer electrification; Chery highlights exports; and NIO shows how premium EV ownership can be built around software and battery swapping. XPeng deserves an honorable mention for AI-assisted driving and fast 2025 growth.
The best choice for an actual buyer will depend less on a global brand ranking than on local availability, charging support, safety testing, warranty coverage, and the exact vehicle sold in that market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BYD’s reported 4.6 million NEV sales figure mean 4.6 million fully electric cars?
No. In Chinese automotive reporting, NEV commonly includes both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. BYD’s reported 2025 total of about 4.6 million NEVs includes both types, including models using its DM technology.
Are Geely, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and smart the same EV brand?
Geely can mean the mainstream Geely consumer brand, Geely Auto Group, or the wider Zhejiang Geely Holding ecosystem. Geely Auto Group includes Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr. Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and smart should not automatically be counted as Geely-badged vehicles.
Why is NIO included if it sells fewer vehicles than BYD, Geely, or Changan?
NIO is included for technological and business-model distinctiveness, not for matching the sales volume of BYD or the large Chinese automakers. Its premium ownership model centers on software, charging, and battery swapping. Its 2025 company deliveries of 326,028 covered NIO, ONVO, and firefly together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs XPeng one of the top five Chinese EV brands?
XPeng is a strong alternative, especially for readers interested in AI-assisted driving, software, and recent delivery growth. It is an honorable mention here because the main five provide broader coverage of large groups, exports, and infrastructure experimentation.
Are these Chinese EV brands available in the United States or every other country?
Not necessarily. A brand’s international presence does not mean every model is sold or supported in every country. Check the local importer or official market site for approval, pricing, charging compatibility, warranty, service coverage, and the exact model specification.
The Bottom Line
The short answer: know BYD for scale and battery technology, Geely and Changan for multi-brand electrification, Chery for exports, and NIO for premium software and battery swapping. XPeng is the key honorable mention for AI-focused EV technology. Because the companies report different kinds of NEV and group figures, this is a curated guide—not a strict sales ranking.
