The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT is the best obvious new electric car under $30,000, while used shoppers should consider the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Nissan Ariya, and Tesla Model Y. The Bolt starts at $28,995 before destination and other charges; the used alternatives offer more range, comfort, or cargo flexibility, but their prices depend on local listings, mileage, trim, battery condition, and vehicle history.
If you want a new electric car priced below $30,000, start with the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT. Chevrolet lists it at a $28,995 starting MSRP, with an estimated 262 miles of range, a standard NACS charging port, and an estimated 10%–80% DC-fast-charge time of about 25 minutes. Destination, taxes, registration, options, and dealer charges can push the final price above $30,000.
For used EV shoppers, the strongest alternatives are the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 for range and efficiency, the 2023–2025 Nissan Ariya for comfort and crossover practicality, and the 2023–2024 Tesla Model Y for cargo room and charging-network access. The prices below are U.S. market figures for August 2026, and the used-car numbers are listing averages—not guaranteed transaction prices.
What “under $30,000” means in this list
The $30,000 cutoff is now mainly a used-EV shopping budget. The Bolt LT is the notable new-car exception, but its $28,995 figure is a starting MSRP rather than an out-the-door price. The used-vehicle figures come from Cars.com’s May 20, 2026 analysis of thousands of listings, using April 2026 market data.

1. 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT: best new EV value
Starting price: $28,995 MSRP before destination, taxes, registration, options, and dealer charges.
Estimated range: 262 miles.
Charging: Native NACS port; more than 150 kW capability on compatible DC fast chargers; approximately 25 minutes for a 10%–80% public DC-fast charge, according to Chevrolet’s estimates.
The Bolt LT is the cleanest answer to the question, “Which new electric car can I buy for less than $30,000?” It combines a low base price with a useful commuting range, current NACS hardware, and a new-car warranty. It is also smaller and easier to place in tight urban parking spaces than the crossover alternatives here.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The important qualification is that the $28,995 number applies to the base LT. Chevrolet pages have displayed inconsistent pricing in different page states, including $27,600 and $28,995. Use $28,995 as the current model-specific FAQ/MSRP figure, but confirm the live Chevrolet build-and-price page and the dealer’s worksheet before treating the car as a sub-$30,000 purchase.
Choose the Bolt if you want
- A new EV rather than a used vehicle.
- The protection and predictability of new-car warranty coverage.
- A compact hatchback with a relatively low entry price.
- Native NACS charging without planning around a port conversion.
- A straightforward daily commuter rather than a large family crossover.
Reasons to look elsewhere
The Bolt is a compact hatchback, not a roomy SUV. Buyers who regularly carry bulky cargo, need a higher seating position, or want a more substantial back seat may prefer the Ariya or Model Y. Its range and charging figures are manufacturer estimates, so actual results will depend on temperature, speed, battery state, charger availability, and other conditions.
2. Used 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6: best range and efficiency bargain
Average list price: $28,775.
Average mileage: 10,586 miles.
Original EPA-estimated range: 240–342 miles, depending on trim, drivetrain, wheels, and other configuration details.

The Ioniq 6 is the best choice here for shoppers who want the most range potential from a relatively new used EV. Cars.com’s listing analysis found 2025 examples averaging only about 10,586 miles while staying below the $30,000 vehicle-price ceiling. That combination of model year, mileage, efficiency, and available long-range configurations makes it unusually compelling.
It is a sedan, however, and that shapes the ownership experience. The low, streamlined body favors efficiency and highway range, but it does not provide the upright cargo loading or flexible rear opening of a crossover. Cars.com describes the Ioniq 6 as balanced and technologically well equipped, with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations available.
Choose the Ioniq 6 if you want
- The highest available range in this shortlist.
- A newer used vehicle with relatively low reported mileage.
- Efficient highway commuting or frequent longer trips.
- A sedan driving position and smoother aerodynamic shape.
- A choice between rear- and all-wheel drive.
What to verify on an Ioniq 6 listing
Do not assume that every $28,775 example is a 342-mile version. The reported 240–342-mile span covers different configurations, and wheels, drivetrain, trim, weather, and battery condition all matter. Confirm the exact trim and window-sticker range through the vehicle identification number, then compare mileage, accident history, charging equipment, and asking price with similar local cars.
3. Used 2023–2025 Nissan Ariya: best comfortable electric crossover
Average list price: $24,564.
Average mileage: 16,696 miles.
Original EPA-estimated range: 205–304 miles, depending on battery, drivetrain, and trim.
The Ariya is the most comfort-oriented choice in this group. It provides a roomier crossover cabin than the Bolt and a quieter, more substantial-feeling interior than many inexpensive EVs. Cars.com specifically highlights its spaciousness, quiet ride, comfort, and available ProPilot Assist 2.0 driver-assistance system.
Its average list price also leaves more room below the $30,000 ceiling than the Ioniq 6 or Model Y. That extra margin can help a buyer choose a lower-mileage example, budget for a pre-purchase inspection, or absorb taxes and dealer fees—although the vehicle itself is still only one part of the final transaction cost.
Choose the Ariya if you want
- A comfortable electric crossover for family use.
- A quiet cabin for highway commuting.
- More cargo and seating flexibility than a sedan or compact hatchback.
- A relatively upscale interior without spending the full budget.
- Available advanced driver assistance, including ProPilot Assist 2.0 on applicable versions.
Trade-offs
The 304-mile range figure is configuration-dependent; shorter-range versions are also represented in the market data. The Ariya is not the sportiest choice, and Cars.com notes that its touch-sensitive controls may not suit drivers who prefer conventional physical buttons and switches. Test the controls in person, especially if several household drivers will use the car.

4. Used 2023–2024 Tesla Model Y: best cargo space and charging-network access
Average list price: $28,897.
Average mileage: 60,595 miles.
Original EPA-estimated range: 260–330 miles, depending on configuration.
The Model Y earns its place because it solves two problems particularly well: carrying cargo and taking road trips. Its crossover body is practical, and Cars.com identifies its cargo capacity and access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network as major strengths. For a buyer who values charging convenience on long journeys, that network can be more important than small differences in advertised range.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The central warning is mileage. The Cars.com average of 60,595 miles is materially higher than the reported averages for the Ioniq 6 and Ariya. A Model Y under $30,000 may therefore look inexpensive because it has accumulated substantially more use, not because it is equivalent to a low-mileage example of the other vehicles.
Choose the Model Y if you want
- A practical crossover body with strong cargo utility.
- Convenient access to Tesla’s Supercharger network for road trips.
- A broad used-market supply from which to compare multiple vehicles.
- A higher driving position and more flexible load space than the Ioniq 6.
Trade-offs
Cars.com flags a firm ride, potential concerns about inconsistent build quality, and the lack of physical controls. Those are not abstract complaints: take a test drive over rough pavement, inspect panel fit and interior wear carefully, and make sure you are comfortable operating commonly used functions through the central screen.
Which one should you buy?
| Your priority | Best match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New-car ownership below the threshold | 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT | The only obvious new-EV option in this research at a sub-$30,000 starting MSRP. |
| Maximum range per dollar | Used 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 | Available configurations reach 342 miles, and the analyzed examples averaged low mileage. |
| Comfortable family crossover | Used Nissan Ariya | Quiet, spacious, and more substantial than the Bolt, with room below the price ceiling. |
| Cargo and road-trip charging | Used Tesla Model Y | Useful crossover cargo space and access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. |
| Lowest possible purchase price | Older Bolt EV, Kona Electric, or Leaf | These can cost substantially less, but require more careful age, battery, and connector evaluation. |
Other affordable EVs worth considering
The four ranked vehicles are not the only sensible choices. They were selected to cover four different buyer needs: a new-car purchase, maximum range, comfortable crossover utility, and cargo-plus-charging convenience.
Used Chevrolet Bolt EV
Cars.com reported an average list price of $11,622 for 2017 Bolt EV examples. That makes an older Bolt a possible bargain for local commuting, especially for a buyer who can charge at home and does not need a new vehicle. Age, mileage, battery condition, recall history, and charging hardware become more important at this price point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Cars.com reported an average list price of $15,950 for 2021 Kona Electric examples. It is a smaller crossover alternative to the Ariya and Model Y, but the specific vehicle still needs to be evaluated for battery condition, damage history, recalls, and charging compatibility.

Used Nissan Leaf
Kelley Blue Book listed approximate 2022 Leaf fair-market prices from $14,900 to $17,600 across trims. The Leaf can be inexpensive, but purchase price alone is not enough to determine whether it fits your use. The 2022 lineup included standard and Plus versions with different power, efficiency, and battery configurations.
Before choosing an older Leaf, check battery condition, the exact charging connector, and whether its fast-charging setup works for the routes and public chargers you expect to use. A cheap Leaf that does not suit your local charging routine may cost less initially but be frustrating to own.
Used-EV inspection checklist
A used EV should not be evaluated like a gasoline car with the engine simply crossed off the checklist. The high-voltage battery, charging system, underbody, cooling equipment, software warnings, and recall status all deserve attention.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall search. NHTSA allows shoppers to search by 17-character vehicle identification number or license plate. Open recalls should be addressed before purchase; recall repairs are performed free by the manufacturer’s dealership.
- Request battery-health evidence. Ask the dealer or seller for a battery diagnostic report or manufacturer documentation where available. Do not use the odometer as a substitute for a battery-health measurement.
- Confirm the exact charging setup. Verify the vehicle’s AC and DC charging connectors, the included charging cable, and any required adapters. The 2027 Bolt has a native NACS port, but used vehicles in this list may use different connector arrangements.
- Verify the range for that exact configuration. The Ioniq 6, Ariya, and Model Y figures in the table are configuration ranges, not promises for every listing. Battery size, drivetrain, trim, wheel choice, weather, speed, terrain, and battery condition can all change the result.
- Inspect for accident, flood, or salvage history. Have an EV-qualified technician examine the battery enclosure, underbody, charging equipment, cooling system, warning lights, and evidence of previous high-voltage repairs.
- Test both slow and fast charging when possible. A test drive alone may not reveal a problem with the charge port or charging system. Ask what charging demonstration the seller can provide and document any warning messages.
- Compare the vehicle with local inventory. Search current used EV listings near you using the same model year, trim, mileage, drivetrain, and condition filters. Then run a used EV price check against comparable vehicles rather than comparing one dealer’s asking price with a national average.
Charging and ownership costs to plan before buying
Connector compatibility is part of the purchase decision. The Bolt’s native NACS port simplifies one part of the equation, but used cars may have different AC and DC connector arrangements. Confirm the exact port on the vehicle, the cable supplied with it, and the connector used by the home and public charging equipment you intend to use.
A J1772-to-NACS adapter may be useful in a particular vehicle-and-charger combination, but it is not a universal solution. Match the adapter to the vehicle, charging type, power rating, and manufacturer-approved use case. Do not assume that an adapter intended for AC charging also works for DC fast charging, or that one adapter fits every EV.
Home charging can be convenient, but the retail price of a Level 2 EV charger is not the full installation budget. Most Level 2 setups require a suitable 240-volt circuit, adequate electrical-panel capacity, and installation by a qualified electrician. Have the electrical system checked before buying hardware, and confirm the vehicle’s AC charging limit so you do not pay for capability the car cannot use.
Also account for costs that do not appear in an advertised vehicle price: destination charges on a new Bolt, taxes, registration, dealer documentation or other charges, insurance, charging equipment, installation, tires, and inspection or repair work on a used car.

How to stay below a $30,000 vehicle budget
- Set two ceilings. Use one limit for the advertised vehicle price and another for the complete out-the-door amount. A $28,995 MSRP is not the same as $28,995 paid at signing.
- Decide whether new matters. If a new-car warranty and a known starting price are priorities, investigate the Bolt first. If space, range, or cabin refinement matters more, the used market offers more choice.
- Choose the body style before comparing range. The Ioniq 6 is a sedan, while the Ariya and Model Y are crossovers and the Bolt is a compact hatchback. A theoretical range advantage does not compensate for a body style that does not fit your cargo or seating needs.
- Compare like with like. Match model year, battery, drivetrain, trim, wheels, mileage, title status, and accident history. Published range spans are not enough to compare two listings.
- Reserve money for verification. A battery report, recall check, history report, charging test, and EV-qualified inspection are especially valuable when a used car is close to the budget limit.
- Check the charging routine before signing. Confirm where the car will charge overnight and how it will charge on your regular longer trips. The cheapest EV is not necessarily the cheapest or easiest one to live with if its connector or charging access is inconvenient.
Final ranking
For a new-car buyer, the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT is the clear starting point if its compact dimensions and base-trim equipment meet the need. For used shoppers, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the range-and-efficiency play, the Nissan Ariya is the comfort-and-crossover play, and the Tesla Model Y is the cargo-and-charging-network play.
The advertised price is only the first filter. The right purchase depends on the exact trim, battery evidence, connector setup, mileage, recall status, history, inspection results, and total out-the-door cost.
Market figures and model details should be rechecked against the live listing or manufacturer page before purchase. Used-market prices change by region, inventory, mileage, trim, incentives, and vehicle history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “under $30,000” include taxes and dealer fees?
The $30,000 figures are vehicle prices before taxes, registration, destination, options, dealer charges, and other fees. The Bolt’s figure is a starting MSRP; the Ioniq 6, Ariya, and Model Y figures are used-listing averages, not guaranteed transaction prices.
How can I check the battery health of a used EV?
Request a battery diagnostic report or other manufacturer or dealer documentation where available. Also inspect the battery enclosure and underbody for damage, and do not assume the odometer alone reveals battery condition.
Do I need a J1772-to-NACS adapter?
No. The correct adapter depends on the vehicle, the charger, the charging type, power rating, and manufacturer-approved use. A J1772-to-NACS adapter should not be treated as a universal solution or assumed to support both AC and DC fast charging.
Which of these EVs uses NACS charging?
The Bolt has a native NACS port, but used EVs can have different AC and DC connector arrangements. Verify the exact port, included cable, and adapter requirements for the specific vehicle before buying.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT for the simplest new-EV answer under $30,000. Shop the used 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 for range, the Nissan Ariya for comfort and crossover practicality, or the Tesla Model Y for cargo space and Supercharger access. In every case, verify the exact configuration, battery condition, connector compatibility, recalls, history, and out-the-door price before committing.
