What stands out in the ranking
- Maruti Suzuki led by a wide margin. Its 169,826 registrations were almost unchanged from the 169,756 reported for August, and GaadiWaadi put its September market share at 40.4%.
- Mahindra edged Tata. The gap between second and third was 1,661 registrations in this series.
- The top six accounted for most of the listed volume. Together, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai, Toyota and Kia contributed 388,880 registrations, or 92.5% of the top-15 total.
- Some growth rates reflect a small comparison base. VinFast’s 49,300% year-over-year rise corresponds to 2,964 registrations versus six in September 2025; the absolute count is more informative than the percentage by itself.
Why Mahindra and Tata can switch places in another September table
This ranking counts vehicle registrations, which occur when vehicles are registered with regional transport offices. Monthly manufacturer sales announcements and many sales tables instead count wholesale dispatches to dealers. The two measures differ in timing and scope, so their totals and rank order need not match.
#1 Best Overall
For example, Autocar India’s September wholesale table reports Tata at 56,972 and Mahindra at 56,745, reversing their order in the registration report above. Those wholesale figures belong to a different series and should not be substituted into the registration ranking. A Vahan-attributed explanation of the distinction is available from Flash Finance.

Use the ranking to compare reported registration volume and year-over-year change for the month, while keeping its data basis in view. It does not show why buyers chose a brand, nor does it measure reliability, safety, ownership costs or which vehicle is right for an individual buyer.

Brand position can also vary by vehicle segment. For historical context—not as September 2026 market shares—a CRISIL MI&A passenger-vehicle industry report hosted in Hyundai investor materials gives Q1 FY2025 compact-SUV shares of Tata 27.2%, Maruti Suzuki 24.5%, Mahindra 19.3%, Hyundai 15.1% and Kia 7.5%. In the report’s mid-size SUV segment, Hyundai led at 37.9%, followed by Maruti Suzuki at 22.1% and Kia at 16.1%. These segment-specific figures answer a different question from a whole-market monthly registration rank.
