If you expect to sell, trade in, or refinance an SUV within five years, depreciation may matter more than a small difference in purchase price. Based on CarEdge’s 2025 U.S. projections, the Toyota 4Runner has the lowest estimated five-year depreciation among the SUVs in its ranking: 25%, or approximately 75% retained value.

2025 ranking: SUVs projected to depreciate the least

Rank SUV Estimated five-year depreciation Approximate retained value
1 Toyota 4Runner 25% 75%
2 Toyota RAV4 31% 69%
3 Hyundai Venue 31% 69%
4 Honda HR-V 32% 68%
5 Toyota Corolla Cross 32% 68%
6 Toyota Crown Signia 32% 68%
7 Toyota Grand Highlander 32% 68%
8 Toyota Land Cruiser 32% 68%
9 Toyota Sequoia 33% 67%
10 Honda CR-V 33% 67%

The retained-value figures are the simple inverse of the projected depreciation rate: 100% minus depreciation. For example, a 25% depreciation projection implies approximately 75% retained value. It does not mean a five-year-old vehicle will sell for exactly 75% of its original sticker price.

1. Toyota 4Runner: 25% projected depreciation

The Toyota 4Runner leads CarEdge’s 2025 ranking, with estimated five-year depreciation of 25%. Its projected 75% retained value is also supported by iSeeCars’ separate analysis, which reports approximately 25.5% average five-year depreciation for the midsize 4Runner.

Rugged styling, off-road capability, Toyota’s reputation, and continued demand for body-on-frame SUVs are recurring reasons this model performs strongly in resale-value comparisons. The 4Runner is not automatically the cheapest SUV to own, however. Fuel, insurance, financing, maintenance, and the price of the specific trim can outweigh a favorable depreciation percentage.

2. Toyota RAV4: 31% projected depreciation

The RAV4 is projected to lose 31% of its original MSRP over five years, retaining approximately 69% of its value. Its mainstream compact-crossover size, broad buyer demand, and strong used-market presence make it one of the more practical low-depreciation choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iSeeCars’ small-SUV comparison is even more favorable, reporting approximately 25.2% five-year depreciation for the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid combined. That figure should not be merged with CarEdge’s number: the studies use different data, model-year pools, and calculations. Hybrid availability, trim, mileage, and regional demand can also affect the value of an individual RAV4.

3. Hyundai Venue: 31% projected depreciation

CarEdge places the budget-oriented Hyundai Venue alongside the RAV4 at 31% projected five-year depreciation, or approximately 69% retained value. Its relatively low purchase price and subcompact-SUV format may appeal to buyers who want an efficient, easy-to-park vehicle rather than a large family crossover.

A low percentage loss does not necessarily mean a low dollar loss compared with every other SUV. Calculate the estimated dollar difference between the actual transaction price and the eventual resale price, particularly when comparing a small SUV with a much more expensive three-row model. Dealer discounts and purchase incentives can also make the real cost basis different from the original MSRP used in a forecast.

4. Honda HR-V: 32% projected depreciation

The Honda HR-V is projected to depreciate 32% over five years, retaining approximately 68% of its original MSRP. It also performs well in iSeeCars’ small-SUV comparison, where the HR-V records approximately 28.8% average five-year depreciation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The HR-V’s appeal is straightforward: compact dimensions, practical utility, and broad demand in the used market. To protect its resale value, prioritize condition and service history. A heavily worn interior, neglected maintenance, or a major accident can erase the advantage suggested by a model-level forecast.

5. Toyota Corolla Cross: 32% projected depreciation

The Corolla Cross is projected to lose 32% of its value in five years, with approximately 68% retained value. It benefits from a familiar Toyota nameplate and a size that sits between smaller subcompact SUVs and larger compact crossovers.

There is an important limitation: the Corolla Cross has less long-term used-market history than established models such as the RAV4 and CR-V. Its 2025 projection is therefore useful, but it should be treated as an estimate with less historical depth. Trim, hybrid or gasoline powertrain, equipment, supply, and future market demand may cause actual resale results to diverge.

6. Toyota Crown Signia: 32% projected depreciation

CarEdge projects 32% five-year depreciation for the Toyota Crown Signia, equivalent to approximately 68% retained value. Its position is notable because it is a newer nameplate with limited long-run used-market data.

That lack of history is the main reason to avoid treating the Crown Signia’s ranking as a guarantee. New vehicles can benefit from strong initial demand, but future resale performance depends on used inventory, incentives, reliability perceptions, powertrain preferences, and how well the model remains differentiated. Buyers should compare the Signia’s transaction price and ownership costs with more established Toyota and Honda alternatives.

7. Toyota Grand Highlander: 32% projected depreciation

The three-row Toyota Grand Highlander is projected to depreciate 32% in five years and retain approximately 68% of its original MSRP. Its family-focused interior space and Toyota demand help explain why it appears among the stronger value-retention performers in CarEdge’s 2025 snapshot.

Large family SUVs can have high purchase, insurance, tire, fuel, and maintenance costs even when they retain value well. CarEdge’s snapshot also noted limited new inventory, a condition that can support prices in the short term but may change as supply and incentives change. Compare the exact trim and powertrain rather than assuming every Grand Highlander will perform identically.

8. Toyota Land Cruiser: 32% projected depreciation

The Toyota Land Cruiser is projected to lose 32% of its original MSRP over five years, retaining approximately 68%. Its rugged utility, off-road identity, and Toyota brand demand support its place in the ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CarEdge lists a 2025 starting price of $58,150, including mandatory destination fees. That figure is a starting point for the referenced 2025 snapshot, not a universal out-the-door price: dealer pricing, taxes, registration, options, and market adjustments can change the amount a buyer actually pays.

The Land Cruiser’s strong percentage retention should be weighed against its high entry price and running costs. A vehicle that retains 68% of a higher MSRP can still lose more dollars than a less expensive SUV that retains a smaller percentage.

9. Toyota Sequoia: 33% projected depreciation

The full-size Toyota Sequoia ranks ninth, with projected five-year depreciation of 33% and approximately 67% retained value. That is a strong percentage result for a large, expensive SUV.

The Sequoia demonstrates why percentage depreciation and dollar depreciation are different measures. A 33% loss on a high-priced vehicle can represent a substantial dollar amount. Buyers should estimate both the expected percentage retained and the likely dollar loss, then add financing, fuel, insurance, taxes, and maintenance to get a more realistic ownership comparison.

10. Honda CR-V: 33% projected depreciation

The Honda CR-V completes the list at 33% estimated five-year depreciation, or approximately 67% retained value. Its high sales volume, practical compact-crossover layout, and broad demand make it one of the most accessible low-depreciation choices.

iSeeCars reports approximately 28.9% average five-year depreciation for the CR-V in its small-SUV comparison, again illustrating how rankings can vary by source. Gasoline and hybrid versions, equipment, mileage, condition, and local supply can produce different resale outcomes for individual vehicles.

How this ranking was calculated

The main list uses CarEdge’s 2025 ranking for the U.S. market. Its five-year depreciation rate represents the estimated percentage decline from original MSRP. The approximate retained-value percentage is calculated as:

Retained value = 100% − projected depreciation

So, a 32% depreciation projection corresponds to approximately 68% retained value. This is a model-level forecast, not a promise about a particular vehicle’s trade-in or private-party price. MSRP also differs from the price a buyer actually pays. A discount lowers the buyer’s cost basis, while a dealer markup or added options can raise it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a purchase decision, it is useful to check current five-year resale-value projections from more than one source and then compare the specific trim, drivetrain, and transaction price. Kelley Blue Book presents residual-value projections as a percentage of original MSRP, but its awards and forecasts are not the same ranking as CarEdge’s.

Why other SUV depreciation rankings look different

There is no single universally accepted 2025 list because research organizations measure different things.

  • CarEdge: The ranking used here is a projected five-year depreciation and resale-value analysis.
  • iSeeCars: Its study calculates value retention by comparing new MSRP with the price of an equivalent five-year-old used vehicle. It uses more than 3 million vehicles and adjusts its analysis with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
  • Kelley Blue Book: Its resale-value awards use analyst-reviewed statistical models based on millions of transactions and present residual values as a percentage of original MSRP.
  • J.D. Power ALG: Its 2025 residual-value awards provide another perspective and consider factors such as pricing discipline, incentives, trim levels, and powertrains.

These differences can change the order of the vehicles. Model-year coverage, category definitions, inflation treatment, sample size, transaction data, and forecasting assumptions all matter. A model appearing lower on one list is not necessarily performing poorly; it may simply be measured under a different framework.

Independent cross-check: iSeeCars results

iSeeCars’ category-based figures provide especially strong support for several vehicles in this article. In the midsize-SUV category, it reports approximately 25.5% five-year depreciation for the Toyota 4Runner, followed by the Jeep Wrangler at 32.4%, Lexus RX 350 at 32.8%, Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid at 36.0%, and Ford Bronco at 39.9%.

How to choose a low-depreciation SUV intelligently

1. Start with the price you will actually pay

Depreciation forecasts commonly reference MSRP, but your financial result depends on the transaction price. Compare dealer discounts, manufacturer incentives, taxes, fees, accessories, financing charges, and any market adjustment. Paying more than MSRP can reduce the benefit of a strong residual-value forecast.

2. Compare dollar loss as well as percentage loss

Multiply the purchase basis by the projected depreciation percentage to create a rough dollar-loss estimate. For example, a 32% projection on a $40,000 basis implies about $12,800 in depreciation, while 33% on a $70,000 basis implies about $23,100. These are simplified illustrations, not resale quotes, but they show why the highest retained percentage is not always the least expensive vehicle.

3. Select the configuration buyers actually want

Trim, engine, hybrid system, four-wheel drive, optional equipment, color, and seating layout can influence demand. A model-level ranking does not mean every configuration retains value equally. Research comparable used listings for the exact version you plan to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Protect condition and documentation

Keep maintenance records, address warning lights promptly, follow the service schedule, avoid unnecessary modifications, and protect the interior and exterior. Mileage and accident history are major factors when a dealer or private buyer evaluates the vehicle.

5. Check local demand before buying

Resale values vary by region. Four-wheel-drive SUVs may attract stronger demand in some markets, while fuel-efficient compact crossovers may be more desirable in others. Compare local listings and recent trade-in estimates instead of relying only on a national projection.

6. Include the costs that depreciation rankings omit

Fuel, insurance, loan interest, registration, tires, repairs, maintenance, and taxes can exceed the difference between two depreciation forecasts. A high-retention SUV can still be expensive to own. Before choosing the model with the highest retained value, review total cost of ownership for the actual vehicle and financing terms.

New versus used: does low depreciation change the decision?

A low-depreciation new SUV may cost more upfront but can offer a known history, current safety equipment, warranty coverage, and predictable financing. A used example may have already absorbed its steepest early depreciation, but its price and condition require closer inspection. Compare the used vehicle’s mileage, accident history, maintenance, remaining warranty, interest rate, and expected repairs with the new vehicle’s incentives and financing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before negotiating, estimate your SUV’s trade-in or private-party value using the exact year, trim, mileage, drivetrain, condition, and ZIP code. A generic model average cannot account for those differences.

What the list does—and does not—tell you

This ranking identifies SUVs with relatively favorable projected value retention in one 2025 U.S. study. It does not identify the safest SUV, the most reliable SUV, the cheapest SUV to operate, or the best vehicle for every buyer. It also does not make any model an investment; vehicles remain depreciating consumer assets.

The Toyota 4Runner is the clearest value-retention leader in the CarEdge list and receives similar support from iSeeCars. The RAV4, HR-V, and CR-V also appear near the top of iSeeCars’ category comparisons. The newer Corolla Cross and Crown Signia deserve more caution because their long-term used-market histories are shorter. For every model, the individual vehicle’s price, condition, mileage, configuration, and local demand matter more than a ranking point or two.

Frequently asked questions

Which SUV depreciates the least in 2025?

In CarEdge’s 2025 U.S. ranking, the Toyota 4Runner has the lowest projected five-year depreciation at 25%, implying approximately 75% retained value. iSeeCars independently reports approximately 25.5% average five-year depreciation for the 4Runner in its midsize-SUV analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is retained value the same as resale price?

No. Retained value is a percentage estimate based on a stated starting value, commonly MSRP. A real resale or trade-in offer depends on the vehicle’s actual purchase price, mileage, condition, history, configuration, market, and timing.

Which matters more: depreciation percentage or dollar loss?

Both matter. The percentage helps compare vehicles of different prices, while dollar loss shows how much money may leave your budget. A more expensive SUV can lose more dollars even if it has a better depreciation percentage.

Why does iSeeCars rank some SUVs differently?

iSeeCars uses a different category-based method, comparing new MSRP with the price of an equivalent five-year-old used vehicle and analyzing more than 3 million vehicles with an adjustment based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Different samples, model years, categories, and calculations naturally produce different results.

Are Toyota SUVs always the best choice for resale value?

No. Toyota models dominate this particular CarEdge list, but Honda models also perform strongly, and the Hyundai Venue appears in the top 10. Resale depends on the individual model and configuration, not just the brand. Purchase price, incentives, condition, mileage, and local demand remain critical.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Toyota 4Runner is the projected low-depreciation leader in CarEdge’s 2025 U.S. ranking, but the best financial choice depends on more than retained-value percentage. Compare the real transaction price, expected dollar loss, configuration, ownership costs, and local resale demand before buying.
