Two current product families are documented: BMW’s R 1300 GS Adventure and Honda’s 2026 Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT. They are useful examples of how widely large adventure bikes can differ, but the available specifications do not establish a ranking or a winner for touring or off-road riding.
Which over-800cc adventure bikes can be verified?
The figures below come from manufacturer sources and apply to the specific markets or versions identified. They are specifications and manufacturer descriptions, not independent test results.
| Model and source scope | Engine and output | Transmission and chassis details | Other stated specifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW R 1300 GS Adventure BMW Motorrad UK technical page; current data accessed in 2026 |
1,300 cc air/liquid-cooled four-stroke flat twin; 107 kW at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm | Transmission, wheel sizes, seat height, wet weight, and fuel capacity: not stated in the cited UK technical data | EU 5+ emissions compliance; WMTC fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100 km |
| Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT (2026) Honda Powersports US model page |
1,084 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin; power and torque: not stated on the cited model page | Six-speed automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT); 110/80-19 front and 150/70R-18 rear tires; electronically adjustable Showa EERA suspension | Seat height 33.7 inches standard or 32.9 inches low; seven HSTC levels; Tour, Urban, Gravel, and User power modes |
BMW Group’s 2024 US press material gives the R 1300 GS Adventure’s output as 145 hp. That is a separate market-specific source and figure from the UK page’s 107 kW specification; do not combine the figures as though they were measured or published under identical conditions. BMW’s UK technical page also reports the 4.9 L/100 km figure on the WMTC test basis, while its EU 5+ compliance is a UK-page specification.
What do these two examples show about big adventure bikes?
“Over 800cc” covers a wide range even within these two examples: the Honda is 1,084 cc and the BMW is 1,300 cc. Displacement alone does not tell you which is a better fit. The BMW Group describes the R 1300 GS Adventure as intended for adventure and long-distance touring; Honda’s cited US page identifies a particular DCT version with electronic suspension, rider modes, and specified tire sizes. Those details help identify the configurations, but they do not prove comparative comfort, off-road ability, reliability, or value.

Trim and market matter as well. The Honda figures are for the 2026 US Adventure Sports ES DCT, not every Africa Twin version or market. The BMW’s detailed figures above come from BMW Motorrad UK’s current technical page; the separate 145 hp figure comes from BMW Group’s US press material published in 2024. Check the model year, equipment, and local specifications with the manufacturer or dealer before comparing a bike for sale.
How should you choose between large adventure bikes?
Start with the riding you actually plan to do, then compare the same trim and market across candidates. A meaningful shortlist should include the following, where manufacturer figures or independent tests are available:

- Waterproof and Weatherproof Ruggedness: IP-rated rugged housing ensures rainproof durability, dust resistance, mud protection, secure mount stability, and reliable function in all conditions
- Road touring: assess riding position, wind protection, passenger comfort, luggage capacity, and fuel range. The cited specifications do not provide a comparable range or passenger-comfort assessment for these two bikes.
- Off-road use: compare wheel sizes, suspension travel and adjustment, ground clearance, tires, and manageable weight. The Honda source gives tire sizes and describes its electronic suspension, but the cited material does not provide enough matching data to rank these models off-road.
- Powertrain and control: compare output with the market and units attached, transmission type, rider aids, and mode options. The Honda page specifically describes a DCT version; do not assume another Africa Twin configuration has the same equipment.
- Practical fit: check seat height, wet or curb weight, fuel capacity, load limits, and service access against your needs. Several of these values are not stated in the sources cited here.
- Cost and availability: confirm local model-year availability, standard versus optional equipment, and price with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer; a current specification page does not establish that a particular trim is available in every region.
For a defensible “top 10,” each candidate would need current, comparable specifications and a clear scoring method—for example, separate weightings for road touring, off-road use, passenger comfort, load carrying, electronics, service access, and price. Independent riding assessments would also be needed for claims about how the bikes perform in practice. The documented facts here are not enough to score ten models fairly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why isn’t this a ranked top-ten list?
The evidence available for this article establishes two examples, not ten qualifying models with comparable regional trims and data. Adding eight names or assigning places would require unsupported assumptions. Nor do these sources establish a best overall bike, hands-on test results, reliability findings, or owner consensus. Treat the BMW and Honda as verified starting points for comparison, not as the first and second places in a ranking.
