J.D. Power’s 2025 luxury-SUV guide names 10 models that place in the top three of at least two studies: initial quality, vehicle dependability and vehicle appeal. It is a composite shortlist, not a single reliability leaderboard. The BMW X4 is the only vehicle on the list with a top-three result in all three studies. For direct dependability evidence, the BMW X4 and Lexus RX rank second in their respective segments, while the Cadillac XT5 and Land Rover Range Rover Sport rank third.
How J.D. Power created this list
The guide’s selection rule is simple: a luxury SUV must rank among the top three in at least two of J.D. Power’s 2025 studies covering initial quality, vehicle dependability and vehicle appeal. A model can therefore appear because owners report few problems, because new owners report a strong first 90 days, because it is especially satisfying to own, or because it performs well in more than one of those areas.

That distinction matters. The list should not be read as a precise order from first to tenth, and ordinal results from different vehicle segments should not be added together to create an overall score.

BMW X4
The X4 has the broadest evidence in the guide: it is the only listed SUV with a top-three position in initial quality, vehicle dependability and vehicle appeal. Its dependability result is especially useful for buyers who want a direct owner-reported reliability signal rather than an appeal-only inclusion.

BMW X6
The X6 earns its place through first-place results in both initial quality and vehicle appeal. The guide does not provide a top-three vehicle-dependability placement for it, so its inclusion should not be treated as a claim that it has the fewest long-term problems.
BMW X7
The X7 combines first-place initial quality with second-place appeal in the large-premium segment. J.D. Power’s guide identifies seven-passenger seating and standard xDrive all-wheel drive, making it the clearest choice here for shoppers who specifically need those stated capabilities.
Cadillac XT5
The XT5 pairs the guide’s highest initial-quality result with a third-place vehicle-dependability result in the midsize-premium segment. That combination gives it both new-owner and longer-term owner evidence.
Genesis GV80
The GV80’s inclusion is based on second-place initial quality and a tie for third in appeal. No top-three dependability placement is supplied for it in this guide.

Land Rover Defender
The Defender places in the top three for initial quality and appeal, with both results tied or ranked second. The guide uses those results for inclusion rather than listing a direct dependability placement.
Land Rover Range Rover
The full-size Range Rover is the appeal leader in its segment and also places second for initial quality. Those results describe owner satisfaction and early ownership quality; they are not a stand-alone dependability ranking.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport has a direct third-place dependability result and a third-place appeal result in the upper-midsize segment. It is therefore one of the list’s models with explicit long-term owner-reported reliability evidence.

Lexus RX
The RX places second for both initial quality and vehicle dependability in the midsize-premium segment. Among the listed midsize SUVs, that makes it one of the clearest choices when reliability is the primary filter.

Porsche Cayenne
The Cayenne reaches the list through second-place appeal and third-place initial quality. J.D. Power does not cite a top-three dependability placement for it in this guide.
Which SUVs have the strongest direct dependability evidence?
Within the 10-model composite list, the BMW X4 and Lexus RX have the highest explicit dependability placement shown: second in their respective segments. The Cadillac XT5 and Land Rover Range Rover Sport are third in dependability. The other six models qualify through combinations of initial quality and appeal, without a top-three dependability placement stated in the guide.
That does not prove that the other six are unreliable. It means only that this particular guide does not give them the same direct top-three dependability evidence.

This is why a strict dependability-only list would include the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Lexus GX and Cadillac XT6 even though they are not all among the guide’s 10 composite selections. The two lists answer different questions: one highlights repeated top-three performance across studies, while the other reports dependability standings by segment.

J.D. Power says its 2025 dependability ratings and awards are based on responses from more than 80,000 verified owners of three-year-old vehicles. Owners report problems experienced during the preceding 12 months, and vehicles with fewer reported problems receive higher scores.
That methodology makes the result useful evidence about how vehicles have performed after three years of ownership. It is not a guarantee about every new model year, every engine or drivetrain, or every individual vehicle. A used example’s maintenance history, mileage, configuration and accident record still matter.
How to use the list when shopping
Start with the right segment
Compact models such as the BMW X4 generally address a different space and use case from large SUVs such as the BMW X7 and Range Rover. Compare vehicles within the size class and seating requirement you actually need before comparing their J.D. Power placements.

Separate reliability from early quality and appeal
If minimizing reported problems is your priority, begin with the models that have an explicit dependability placement: BMW X4, Lexus RX, Cadillac XT5 and Land Rover Range Rover Sport. If a vehicle’s first-year experience, design satisfaction or ownership appeal matters more, the initial-quality and appeal leaders may deserve equal consideration.
Verify the configuration and ownership cost
The guide does not provide a complete powertrain, cargo-volume, trim-price or operating-cost comparison. Check the exact engine, transmission, drivetrain, seating layout, warranty, service history and local transaction price for the vehicle you are considering. The one configuration detail stated in the guide is that the BMW X7 seats seven and includes standard xDrive all-wheel drive.
Does this answer the 2026 question?
No complete, score-based 2026 top 10 could be verified from the available J.D. Power material. The defensible result here is the 2025 guide and its underlying 2025 dependability context; it should not be presented as a 2026 ranking.
