Dash-cam footage of a white Toyota Prado rolling on Tonkin Highway near the Rowley Road exit in Hilbert, south of Perth, was reported by PerthNow on 5 April 2023. This is a report about an incident from that period, not a current crash or live traffic alert. The footage was uploaded on the Monday before the article, but the report does not say when the recording was made.

What the report says happened

According to PerthNow, the dash-cam vision was uploaded to Dash Cam Owners Australia and shows the Prado travelling down the left-hand emergency lane of Tonkin Highway while heavy traffic was moving in the regular lanes. The report says the vehicle passed that traffic, struck a trailer sign and rolled onto its roof. The article’s headline calls the manoeuvre dangerous; that is the publication’s characterisation, not a finding by police or a court.

The full original report is available at PerthNow’s Tonkin Highway crash report of 5 April 2023.

The driver and the response

Police confirmed to PerthNow that the driver, a 46-year-old man, was helped by members of the public and taken to hospital as a precaution. The report does not describe a serious injury. Police were still investigating when the article was published.

What the report does not establish

The available reporting leaves several points unresolved. Readers searching for them should know that the 2023 article does not cover:

  • Timing: the date and time the crash or the recording took place. The report only confirms the footage was uploaded on the Monday before publication.
  • Speed, alcohol or other conditions: no incident-specific speed, drug or alcohol result, or injury diagnosis is reported.
  • Occupants: how many people were in the Prado.
  • Charges or outcome: any road-law charge, fine, court hearing or final police finding. None is reported, and none should be assumed from the headline.
  • The camera: who filmed the footage, and the make or model of the dash cam used.

Comments on the original article include opinions about what caused the crash. They are not verified facts and this article does not repeat them as such.

Official road-safety context

Main Roads Western Australia describes its road-safety work as based on Safe System principles, which include designing the road system to be more forgiving of driver error. Its Road Safety page states: “Crash analysis reveals that over 70% of serious accidents are caused by driver errors, rather than intentional risk-taking behaviours such as speeding or drink driving.” The page does not give a publication year for that figure, and it refers to the Western Australia Road Safety Action Plan 2024–2026. See Main Roads WA’s Road Safety page.

That is a statewide statement about serious crashes in general. It is not a finding about the Tonkin Highway incident, and it cannot tell us why this particular Prado left the carriageway.

Using footage like this carefully

Dash-cam footage can show a sequence of events, but a single clip does not establish the full context. The reporting does not say whether the camera recorded the whole approach, what the driver was doing beforehand, or what other road users saw. A dash cam records; it does not prevent a collision, and nothing in the report suggests the device used here had any particular feature.

For viewers who see similar clips, the practical questions are simple: when was it recorded, what does the footage not show, and has an official source confirmed anything beyond what was reported? For this incident, the answers in the public record stop at the April 2023 report.

Key facts to keep

  • The report was published on 5 April 2023 and concerns a crash near the Rowley Road exit in Hilbert.
  • The reported sequence is a Prado using the left-hand emergency lane, striking a trailer sign and rolling onto its roof.
  • The 46-year-old driver was taken to hospital as a precaution; no serious injury is reported.
  • Police were investigating at the time of publication. No later outcome is reported in the sources reviewed here.
