What is the Tonke Transporter 7?
It is a camper conversion by Tonke built on Volkswagen’s new Transporter 7 platform—not a separate Volkswagen factory camper. Tonke’s current model page presents the Transporter 7 VAN and Basecamp. The company’s earlier announcement described the project as a planned conversion; the current page now describes the two layouts. Tonke’s Transporter 7 model page is the relevant current overview.
What powertrains are available?
Tonke presents three broad choices: diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also identifies TDI diesel, eHybrid plug-in hybrid and e-Transporter electric families for the new Transporter. That confirms the platform’s powertrain categories, but not that every configuration is offered with every Tonke layout in every country.
Volkswagen’s specifications are market-specific. For example, its Irish-market Transporter information should not be treated as a universal specification sheet. Confirm the exact engine, drivetrain, charging details, range and towing limits for the vehicle offered in your country and model year. Tonke displays some estimates on its own page, but those should be understood as manufacturer estimates, not independently tested or guaranteed performance.

How do the VAN and Basecamp differ?

These lengths and layout descriptions come from Tonke’s current model page. Its earlier concept announcement mentioned a swivel kitchen and a downstairs bed, but those details should not be assumed to describe both current layouts. For the Basecamp, the current page specifically identifies a rear kitchen.

What should buyers verify before choosing?
- Local configuration: Ask Tonke or the local Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles organization which powertrains and wheelbases are available together in your market.
- Use case: Compare the L1 VAN and L2 Basecamp against your parking, travel and sleeping needs; the Basecamp is the longer vehicle and is the layout for which Tonke states three sleeping places.
- Operating figures: Request configuration-specific range, fuel consumption, charging information and towing limits. Do not compare figures drawn from different markets or powertrains as if they were measured under identical conditions.
- Purchase terms: Confirm current price, order availability and delivery timing directly with Tonke or the relevant local Volkswagen organization; these details are not established by the model overview.
