Every specification below, including the 80 cm bed projection and the 2.06 m height, is Tonke’s own published claim. None of it has been confirmed by independent testing.
What the video shows
Tonke’s video (published 2 May 2025 on the company’s channel) walks through setting up the pop-up roof. According to the company’s description, the roof opens sideways rather than lifting straight up, and the result is a sleeping area above the vehicle’s living space. The video is useful for seeing the order of the movements and the general shape of the finished setup. It does not show load limits, wind performance, or how the structure behaves over time.
Tonke’s description also says the bed projects 80 cm outside the bus when deployed and that retractable legs beneath the bed provide support. The company’s wording on that point is that the roof “opens sideways and creates a spacious, comfortable sleeping area, without protruding awkwardly,” and that the bed “extends only 80 centimetres outside the bus, making it easy to stand in narrow places.” The second statement describes the design intent. It is not a verified measure of how usable the space is in a tight street or car park.

Because these numbers come from the manufacturer, treat the 2.06 m height as the figure to check against your own garage or carport clearance and your chosen wheel and tyre setup, which the sources do not discuss.

Fitment: what the roof is designed for
The roof is a vehicle-specific conversion, not a generic pop-top that suits any van. Tonke states the following limits:
- Body length: developed exclusively for the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz. Tonke says it does not fit the short version or other vehicles.
- Installation: Tonke says it installs the roof only on vehicles it supplies. The sources do not establish whether Tonke will fit the roof to a van the customer already owns.
- Interior pairing: the roof can be combined with either the Trail or the Explorer interior.
If you already own a long-wheelbase ID. Buzz, the practical question is whether Tonke will accept it for conversion. That needs a direct answer from the company, because the published material only covers vehicles Tonke supplies.

Trail or Explorer: the interior choice that comes with the roof
Trail and Explorer are interior layouts, and the roof is an option alongside either one. Tonke’s comparison page sets out the differences below.

Choose between the two by how you plan to use the van. Trail gives more seats and an outdoor cooking position at the tailgate. Explorer gives a larger interior fridge and cooking inside by the sliding door. Tonke’s page does not state water capacity for either layout, so ask for it before comparing storage.

What remains unverified
The published material does not establish the following points, so do not assume them:
- Structural load limits for the sleeping platform and its legs.
- Stability of the raised section in wind or on uneven ground.
- Weather sealing, insulation, and the condition of the roof after long-term use.
- Any independent safety or durability testing.
Ask Tonke for these specifications in writing before you rely on the roof for regular sleeping.

Pricing and delivery
Tonke’s April 2026 brochure says delivery averages six to nine months, depending on the chosen model and ID. Buzz availability. The company directs customers to request current delivery timing directly. The sources reviewed here do not give a current price for the roof, so obtain a quote from Tonke rather than relying on a figure from an older listing.
Next steps if you are considering the roof
- Confirm your ID. Buzz is the long-wheelbase version.
- Ask Tonke whether it will convert a vehicle you already own, or whether it only installs on vehicles it supplies.
- Check the 2.06 m overall height against your garage, carport, and any low-clearance routes you use.
- Choose Trail or Explorer based on seating, cooking position, and fridge needs.
- Request written load, stability, and water-capacity figures, and current delivery timing.
The video demonstrates the design clearly. Whether the roof meets your requirements depends on figures and terms that only Tonke can supply.
