The strongest-supported choice is a well-maintained 2007–2009 Range Rover L322 with the 4.4-litre Jaguar petrol V8. Specialist buying guidance describes it as the most reliable all-rounder, but that is an informed buying judgment—not a result proven by a controlled model-year reliability study. Service history, repairs and present condition can matter more than the year on the registration document.
What is the best year L322 to buy?
Start your search with 2007–2009 4.4-litre Jaguar V8 examples, then judge each car on its records and condition. The recommendation comes from L322.net’s buying guide, which favors that engine and period as an all-rounder. Autocar’s used buying guide likewise emphasizes documented servicing, completed recalls and technical service bulletins, and evidence of drivetrain and suspension refurbishment.
This is not a guarantee that every 2007–2009 car is dependable. A neglected example can be a worse purchase than a well-maintained car from another year. Confirm the actual engine and specification by VIN: model-year, build-date and registration-year distinctions, as well as market differences, can make registration alone misleading.
How L322 model years and engines differ
The third-generation Range Rover ran from 2002 through 2012, with major changes to engines and equipment. A useful first pass is to group cars by drivetrain rather than treating all L322s from one calendar year as equivalent.
#1 Best Overall
| Broad period | Drivetrain or change | What a buyer should consider |
|---|---|---|
| 2002–2005 | BMW-engine era, according to L322.net | Often cheaper to buy, but the guide regards these cars as riskier; inspect carefully for coolant and oil leaks, including water-jacket O-ring problems. |
| 2006–2009 | Jaguar-engine era, according to L322.net; the 4.4-litre petrol V8 is its recommended all-rounder | Check that the fitted engine matches the VIN and specification, and prioritize documented maintenance. |
| Late cars, broadly 2010–2012 | Newer equipment; petrol supercharged V8 changed from 4.2 to 5.0 litres. Diesel moved from 3.6 TDV8 to 4.4 TDV8 and an eight-speed automatic on diesel models, according to Autocar. | Investigate the specific engine’s known concerns, particularly cold-start timing-chain rattle on 5.0-litre petrol cars. |
These are broad guide periods, not a substitute for identifying a particular vehicle. The specialist breakdown is in L322.net’s L322 guide; Autocar details the later drivetrain transitions in its buying guide.
Is the Range Rover L322 reliable?
There is no robust, controlled year-by-year reliability study in the reviewed sources, and no manufacturer-issued reliability ranking is established there. The 2007–2009 recommendation is a specialist-informed synthesis, not statistical proof. A US complaint and recall summary also says its sample is too small to rank its covered 2007–2012 model years reliably; it does not cover the full 2002–2012 generation. Complaints and recalls are not a complete measure of breakdowns.

One broader data point needs careful interpretation: CarGarages’ analysis of UK DVSA records, accessed in 2026, reports 751,000 L322 MOT tests and a 27.2% fail rate across the generation. It identifies brake performance and suspension as notable issue areas. That is a pooled roadworthiness-test result, not a model-year ranking or a direct measure of unscheduled mechanical failures. See the CarGarages L322 MOT and problems page.
What to check before buying any L322
These cars are complex, and a repair invoice or clean dashboard alone does not establish that an example is sound. Arrange an independent inspection by a Land Rover specialist and request a diagnostic scan; a scan can help identify faults, but it cannot prove the vehicle is healthy.

Records, recalls and costly work
- Look for a full, consistent service history, invoices rather than unsupported verbal claims, and evidence that recalls and technical service bulletins were addressed.
- Ask specifically for records of major drivetrain and suspension work. Documented care is a better buying signal than trim level or a low asking price.
- Ask whether gearbox fluid and filter have been serviced even if the transmission was described as “sealed for life.”
Gearbox, transfer case and brakes
- Drive the car from cold and again when warm. Watch for harsh, delayed, flaring or slipping shifts, clunks, and transmission warning lights.
- Listen for transfer-case whine and check for leaks. Check brake wear and for front suspension knocks under braking.
Air suspension and suspension hardware
- Cycle through the available ride-height settings and listen for an unusually noisy compressor. Ask for compressor service records.
- Check for leaks and see whether a corner sags after the vehicle has been parked. Listen for rear-bush clunks.
Engine-specific checks
- 5.0-litre petrol: listen for timing-chain rattle on a cold start and ask for proof of any relevant repair.
- 3.6 TDV8: ask about turbo-actuator and coolant-pipe work, verify service history, and check water-pump work at the cambelt service.
- BMW-era engines: inspect for coolant and oil leaks, including potential water-jacket O-ring problems.
- 4.2-litre supercharged petrol: listen for a supercharger rattle at idle.
Body, water ingress and underbody
- Inspect for underside damage, tailgate rust and water ingress around roof seams. Check the boot audio components for signs of water exposure; water can reach them on some cars.
These inspection priorities are drawn from the specialist L322.net common-problems guide and Autocar’s L322 used-car buying guide. Use them to direct an inspection, not as a claim that every car has these faults.

- Premium Natural Rubber:The core vibration isolator is made of high-purity natural rubber blended with special formulas, offering excellent tear resistance and anti-aging properties to withstand extreme climates
- High-Strength Steel Bracket:The metal bracket is stamped or welded from high-strength carbon steel and features an electrocoating rust-proof finish to effectively resist mud, water, and salt corrosion under the chassis
- Superior Vibration Dampening:Precisely tuned rubber hardness and internal hydraulic damping (if applicable) effectively absorb engine vibrations, eliminating resonance and abnormal noises inside the cabin
- Smoother Shifting Experience:Provides solid engine support to prevent excessive movement during hard acceleration or braking, thereby improving shifting smoothness in manual/automatic transmissions

- Engine and transmission: identify whether it has a BMW-era engine, Jaguar 4.4 or 4.2 petrol, 5.0 petrol, 3.6 TDV8 or 4.4 TDV8, then investigate the concerns and service evidence relevant to that combination.
- Maintenance evidence: weigh the completeness of records, fluid and filter servicing, campaign completion and proof of expensive repairs.
- Present condition: assess gearbox behavior, suspension operation, diagnostic faults, cooling, transfer case, brakes, body and signs of water leaks.
- Use case: L322.net positions the 4.4 petrol as an all-rounder and TDV8 variants as options for long-distance driving or towing. Consider your actual mileage and local diesel rules; the buying guidance cited here does not independently assess either.
As Autocar quotes owner George Hill advising: “choose the best you can afford and ensure the car has a full history.” That is a useful principle for any L322, but it does not replace a specialist inspection or a realistic budget for maintaining a large, complex luxury vehicle.
